My husband and I went on a cruise to celebrate my 500th day sober. Traveling without drinking has gotten easier over time.
Soon after I stopped drinking alcohol, I traveled on an expedition cruise, whale-watching in Mexico through National Geographic and Lindblad Expeditions. I remember being thrilled for the experience, but also nervous about the all-inclusive alcohol on the ship.
Staying sober on vacation was easier than I thought, but it was a struggle to watch other passengers, including my husband, throw back a few glasses of wine at dinner or sip craft cocktails at the ship's bar.
I've often been told sobriety is a muscle, and the more you exercise it, the easier it gets to pass up booze. It's true: Since my first sober vacation, I've visited an all-inclusive resort in St. Vincent, stayed alcohol-free during a solo trip to London, and even faced my fears at some of my favorite Florida theme park Halloween events without liquid courage. So when my husband and I talked about taking a trip together to celebrate making it to 500 days sober — this time, an expedition cruise around Portugal's Azores islands — I didn't worry at all.
An expedition cruise felt like the perfect vacation for celebrating my sobriety wins
On our cruise around the Azores, we stopped at seven islands and spent our days hiking, walking, and exploring. We learned about Azorean history and culture, ate some incredible local dishes, saw breathtaking views, and hit lots of cafés and shops in quaint Azorean towns. In the evenings, we sat at communal dinner tables with other guests and had great conversations late into the night. The trip was unique and special, and being sober throughout every moment of it felt like the perfect way to enjoy it.
I'm more physically able to enjoy my travels
Expedition cruises are among the most physically demanding trips I've ever taken. Not only are there full days of hiking and walking around towns, but there are lots of stairs aboard the ship and activities like early-morning stretch classes. Most days begin with an early-morning wake-up call around 6 or 7 a.m., followed by a mad dash to get ready, eat breakfast, and disembark the ship for adventure.
Had I been staying up late drinking and waking up hungover, I'd never have enjoyed these activities as much as I did. What's more, I was overwhelmed with pride each time I succeeded at completing a difficult hike, since in my drinking days, my physical health wasn't as good as it is now.
I make more memories now
When I traveled and drank alcohol, there were always parts of my vacation that were a blur. Too many Aperol spritzes in Italy, and I can only remember a day we spent in Florence through photos. Bottles of wine poolside on a Caribbean cruise? There are blocks of that day I barely recall. Traveling sober has allowed me to remember more of my vacations, like when we were picked to sleep overnight in one of the heated igloos on our ship's upper deck.
Where I previously would have had several cocktails and fallen asleep, I'll now remember having a candle-lit sleepover with my husband in a glass igloo as we looked at the stars and watched movies on my iPad. In fact, all of my memories of the trip, from hiking to the top of a volcano to watching dolphins swim alongside our ship, are permanent fixtures in my booze-free brain.
Sobriety has only made travel better
Looking back at the expedition cruise we took last year, when I was only a few months sober, I wish I could tell that version of myself how much better travel would continue to get without alcohol. My biggest focus during travel used to be my next drink, and now I spend vacations breathing in the fresh ocean air, proving how strong my body is through hiking, and appreciating local cuisine, which tastes way better when not drowned in alcoholic drinks.
I'm more present, more relaxed, more energetic, and more ready to enjoy everything I do and see on my trip. Travel has only gotten better in more than 500 days of sobriety, and I've been able to enjoy every moment in every destination.

"Food is what holds everything together, and the stories will come from that," he explains. The goal was to avoid so-called "food porn" and instead use the dishes to illustrate deeper truths. "You want the food to lead to the story of the people and the culture, or how the farms have worked for hundreds of years, or how this has been passed down from family to family." The Emmy-nominated episode, set in Tuscany, is a perfect representation of Ball's work. While the team filmed in Florence, they also explored more remote areas to find a connection between the old and the new. As Ball recounts, "They make lardo, the kind of cured back fat of pork, in these marble chests taken from the same mountains that Michelangelo carved his David from." As the cinematographer of Tucci in Italy, Ball faced the unique challenges of filming in busy, uncontrolled environments. To make the food look appealing, he relied on natural light, even putting the dishes near a window to make them "pop." As for working in public spaces, "You deal with it when it happens," he states. "It's very hard to walk through the center of Florence and not get stopped, but you just move on and you get what you can in the time given." Ball feels "super fortunate" to have filmed in every region of Italy, and he doesn't have a specific dream location to travel to in the next season. "Italy's a fantastic country to go to. Lindblad Names Two New Ships And Launches ‘Explorers-In-Training'
It's been a busy month for National Geographic–Lindblad Expeditions, which named its two new ships, National Geographic Gemini and National Geographic Delfina, in an elaborate christening ceremony in the Galápagos Islands on July 9, 2025, and launched its new 'Explorers-in-Training' programming for kids and teens at the end of July. Anchored in Academy Bay, the two new ships were joined by their sibling vessels, National Geographic Islander II and National Geographic Endeavour II. Onboard the Gemini, the crew were joined by several members of Lindblad Expeditions' executive team, including CEO Natalya Leahy and Interim Chief Maritime Officer, Rear Admiral Keith Taylor, plus several local partners, community members and their families. 'Today, we celebrate not just an event, we're celebrating a story that started in February 1967, when Lars-Eric Lindblad led the very first non-scientific expedition to the Galápagos Islands,' said Leahy. 'Today's naming is done in honor of the Galápagos community. We will continue our hard work right by your side and never forget that we are just visitors to your home.' Two New Ships: Gemini and Delfina Designed to hold just 48 guests in its 27 outward-facing staterooms, National Geographic Gemini strikes a perfect balance between small-ship and large-ship cruising, with plenty of activities, space to stretch out on the deck and enough peace to relax in the library or lounge. What to Know Before You Go Instead of following a set schedule, National Geographic–Lindblad Expeditions sailings are more fluid, with loose itineraries based on daily traffic within Galápagos National Park. You'll be given a rough idea of the types of activities you'll be doing ahead of time so you know what to pack, and once onboard, the details of the next day's plans are shared during nightly presentations by expedition leaders. That way, everyone is prepared and with the Galápagos National Park Service directing ship traffic, the UNESCO World Heritage site doesn't get too overwhelmed by visitors. Remember to pack a good pair of waterproof hiking sandals for wet landings, hiking boots for dry landings, reef-safe sunscreen, and your best camera or a new Go-Pro for underwater videos. Pack plenty of 'Expedition Chic' attire like lightweight khaki pants and hiking shirts to avoid getting sunburned—you'll be sailing along the equator, after all, and the sun is strong. While the total cost of your Galápagos cruise aboard either of the two new ships doesn't include international airfare, gratuities or spa services, it does cover all your meals and beverages, educational presentations by National Geographic photographers and naturalists, access to kayaks and stand-up paddle boards, shore excursions aboard zodiacs and use of snorkeling equipment (masks, fins, and shorty wetsuits—bring a full-body diving skin to wear under it if you're wary of swimming in cooler waters). Cruise fares also include domestic flights to Baltra Island (GPS) from Guayaquil (GYE) or Quito (UIO), two nights' accommodations in either city (one before your sailing and one after), port taxes, the Galápagos Islands National Park entrance fee ($200 per adult, $100 per child) and the Tourist Transit Card fee ($20 per person). The daredevils who keep Lagos moving
Many in Lagos, Nigeria, use motorcycle taxis known as okadas to get around the sprawling city. Photographs by Victor Adewale The fabric of Lagos, Nigeria, is delicately strung together: The megacity spills from the mainland onto several islands in a lagoon that brushes against the Atlantic Ocean. It covers an area of about 1,300 square miles, and many Lagosians navigate the sprawling landscape on the back of a motorcycle taxi, or okada. Their daredevil drivers, called riders, zigzag through congested streets, dodging potholes and pedestrians as both rider and passenger—or, in some cases, multiple passengers—try to stay upright and unharmed. Public transportation here can be inefficient, and roads can be difficult to maneuver on foot. Okadas 'solve a crucial problem that the government has been unable to solve for years,' says photographer and National Geographic Explorer Victor Adewale, who was born and raised in Lagos. (The forgotten history of this city's first electric taxi fleet.) Some see okadas as a menace. Local officials claim riders are responsible for a large portion of Lagos's traffic accidents, and robberies are often committed by people on motorcycles. To improve road safety, bureaucrats have banned commercial motorcycles from bridges, highways, and many other parts of the city. In 2019, the government launched the Bus Reform Initiative, which has deployed hundreds of new buses along dozens of routes across the region. That hasn't decreased the population's appetite for okadas, which are still widely used to ferry commuters to neighborhoods the buses can't reach. 'Everybody you see on the streets is riding in defiance of the ban because they don't have another option,' Adewale says. Traditionally, the motorcycles have been the cheapest choice for passengers—some rides cost the equivalent of less than a U.S. dollar—and have provided a reliable living for those who drive them in a city where wages can be hard to come by. 'I am still riding because my job as a mechanic is not bringing in the income I need on time,' says Oluwafemi Ipadeola, a friend of Adewale's father who has driven okadas for over 20 years to pay for his children's education. Fares are beginning to rise as riders factor in the risk of getting caught. Enforcement of the ban is uneven, but residents still operating okadas are vulnerable and face harassment from police, who frequently arrest riders and demand extortion payments in exchange for confiscated motorcycles. 'People pay as much as 90,000 naira [$57] to get their motorcycle back,' Adewale says. 'Sometimes they don't get it back. Sometimes they have to watch it get crushed.' The government has impounded and destroyed thousands of okadas, a devastating blow. The motorcycles are expensive—up to 33 times the median annual salary in Lagos—and riders frequently buy them in installments. (How Lagos has become Africa's boomtown.) Riders haven't taken the ban lying down. Numerous protests have led to clashes with police, and at least one okada union has filed a lawsuit against the government, seeking both a repeal of the ban and lost wages. Adewale's opinion of okadas has changed over the years. When he was a boy, his father, who rode okadas for 25 years, used the same bike to take the family to church and the market, and to drop off Adewale and his brother at school. His whole family rode on the back of the motorcycle, which was a marker of lower social class. At the time, he felt ashamed and would get off the okada a short distance from school so his classmates wouldn't see him. But that shame has now evolved into pride as Adewale has watched the riders navigate these new challenges: 'They refuse to be erased from the city.' The government recently banned okadas, citing safety concerns. Undeterred, the drivers, who are known locally as riders, still line up each day in search of work. Along the median of one of Lagos's major expressways, okada riders beckon to potential passengers. They must compete with drivers of small three-wheeled vehicles called kekes and mini buses called danfos that also shepherd people through the city's snarled traffic. Kehinde Ogunjimi and his family sit atop an okada. Riders work long shifts—sometimes up to 12 hours—to make ends meet. Kilanko Lukumonu manages an okada park, a dedicated location where riders pick up passengers. A rider might make around 120,000 naira ($78) a month. Linus Igwe, seen here with his three children, used to sell shoemaking materials to cobblers. That work dried up, and he's since made a living riding okadas. Anodere Abigail Adaku began riding to support her four daughters and save up for a small car. Many okada riders use the job to supplement their income. Rider Abdulrasaq awaits passengers. Okada riders congregate along a roadway, looking for work. Several tech companies have launched ride-hailing apps in an attempt to disrupt the motorcycle taxi industry, but few have gained traction. In Mushin, a suburb of Lagos, the okada ban is strictly enforced, and both operators and passengers have been jailed. Riders often travel on side roads to avoid detection by police.
