Govt aims for 200,000 individuals to be discharged from bankruptcy in 2025
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said that so far, approximately 186,000 individuals have been successfully released from bankruptcy.
She said the record was obtained by the Malaysian Insolvency Department following the government's efforts in giving a second chance to the affected group to continue their lives.
"We hope by the end of the year, we can give a calculation (people released from bankruptcy status). So in total, we hope to target 200,000 this year," she said.
She told reporters after the launch of the Financial Literacy Programme for Public Higher Education Institutions (IPTA) and Private Higher Education Institutions (IPTS) in 2025 by Malaysian Insolvency Department at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam on Monday (June 23).
Also present was UiTM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Shahrin Sahib @ Shabuddin.
When tabling Budget 2025, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar said the Second Chance Policy would be expanded to young people aged 40 and below who have debts not exceeding RM200,000, starting last year.
Meanwhile, Azalina said a total of 25,578 bankruptcy cases were recorded from 2021 to May 2025 from the age of under 25 to 55 and above.
Of that total, she said, 10,145 bankruptcy cases were recorded involving the 35 to 44 age group.
She said that by gender, men recorded higher bankruptcy cases than women, at 18,590 during the same period.
Meanwhile, Azalina said the programme organised on Monday was one of the proactive steps taken by the Madani government to bring laws and financial management knowledge and literacy to the people, especially students of higher learning institutions who are about to enter the working world.
About 1,000 students from public and private universities and colleges were involved in the one-day programme. - Bernama

Agrobank President and Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Tengku Ahmad Badli Shah Raja Hussin said a total of 20 participants comprising the B40 group and military veterans received a grant of RM5,000 each to support the purchase of additional equipment for cultivating a five-acre plot of land rented from Felda Global Ventures (FGV). 'This project is part of the collaboration between Agrobank and Aqina Fruits Sdn Bhd, which also involves the implementation of pineapple cultivation projects in several other locations, namely in Beaufort and Pekoti. bootstrap slideshow 'For the projects in Chuping and Beaufort, the total allocations are RM6 million each, while the project in Pekoti received the highest allocation of RM12 million,' he said in a statement. 'In addition, it also serves to stimulate the growth of the agricultural sector and increase the production of pineapples in the country to meet domestic market needs as well as the export potential abroad,' he said. Meanwhile, through the iTEKAD initiative, several programmes have been introduced such as the MAINJ Micro Entrepreneur Financing Programme, the BERNAS Farm Partner Programme, the Oil Palm Replanting Scheme, as well as the Vessel Modernisation and Catch Mechanisation Programme.

Melaka upgrades education facilities in Rembia with new schools
ALOR GAJAH: The Melaka government has pledged to enhance educational infrastructure in the Rembia constituency. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh (pic) announced plans for a new Alor Gajah District Education Office building costing RM15.9 million. A separate RM15.8 million will fund a new building for Datuk Seri Mohd Zin Vocational College. The state has also proposed a new national secondary school to the federal government due to high student numbers. Ab Rauf expressed hope for its inclusion in the 13th Malaysia Plan during a public event at Dataran Keris. State officials, including Rembia coordinator Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan, attended the ceremony. Additional projects include a religious primary school in Kampung Rembia and a kindergarten in Kampung Sungai Petai. JAIM has dedicated RM90,000 to upgrade two SRAs and Sekolah Menengah Arab Al-Faizin in Jelatang. Healthcare improvements include RM8.6 million for Alor Gajah Hospital's second operation theatre, set for completion by April 2026. NUTP welcomes reminder on smoking, vaping ban
PETALING JAYA: The National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) welcomes the recent reminder issued by Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek regarding the ban on smoking and vaping in schools. NUTP said it serves as an important alert to all stakeholders, especially educators. Its president Aminuddin Awang said Fadhlina's statement should not be viewed as a threat, but rather as an effort to highlight existing laws. 'I believe what was said serves as a reminder to all parties not to smoke within school premises,' Aminuddin told theSun when contacted. 'If she had not raised it in Parliament, perhaps many teachers would remain unaware of it. The regulation states that a person can be fined up to RM10,000 or even face imprisonment, but that does not mean the punishment would be (applied) to everyone. It is more of a warning to raise awareness.' He added that the union has no issues with the statement and hopes it would be taken positively by all teachers and school staff. Responding to claims that certain teachers smoke in schools, Aminuddin said such allegations are inaccurate and do not reflect the majority of educators in the country. 'To say that teachers are smokers is not accurate. The numbers are not significant and the majority of our teachers are not smokers. Even if a small number do smoke, they do not do so openly in front of students.' The issue of smoking in schools came into the spotlight following the education minister's statement in Parliament, in which she reiterated the firm stance of the government on maintaining smoke-free school environments under the existing law. In her written reply in Parliament on Aug 12, Fadhlina said: 'Teachers found vaping or smoking within school premises may face legal action such as fines of up to RM10,000 or imprisonment of up to two years, in accordance with the Smoking Products Control Act for Public Health 2024.' She was responding to a question raised by Padang Terap MP Nurul Amin Hamid, who asked about measures taken by the ministry to curb the culture of vaping among school students. Nurul Amin had also claimed some teachers vape in public. This led MCA Education Consultative Committee deputy chairperson Felicia Y.T. Wong to question the necessity of imposing steep fines and jail sentences on teachers found smoking or vaping. Wong said such severe penalties suggest these measures are the default response to the offences, unfairly targeting teachers who are insufficiently appreciated. 'In the Dewan Rakyat in 2023, Education Deputy Minister Wong Kah Woh reported that 6,394 teachers went on early retirement, an increase from the previous year during which 5,306 left. 'According to the Education Ministry in a parliamentary written reply on June 26 last year, the majority of teachers left early because they were uninterested in their roles,' Wong added. Several teachers polled by theSun expressed concern that the penalties are too severe, adding that imprisoning educators could create further complications. 'About half of the male teachers at my school are smokers or vapers. If we were all sent to prison, the school would face a shortage and need many replacement teachers,' said a 29-year-old teacher from the Klang Valley, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
