Affordable, quality healthcare priority of central government: JP Nadda

Hans India21-04-2025

Union Health Minister JP Nadda on Monday said that providing affordable and quality healthcare to every poor person in the country is a priority of the central government and the two pillars of Ayushman Bharat initiative – Ayushman Arogya Mandir and AB PMJAY (Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana) — are a result of a very well-thought process.
Addressing the gathering during an event in the national capital, the minister highlighted that the government's expenditure on healthcare has increased from 29 per cent in 2014 to 48 per cent today, leading to decline in out-of-pocket expenditure of people.
He stated that screening of communicable and non-communicable diseases in Ayushman Arogya Mandir and expanding the package of services being provided there has helped in providing preventive and promotive healthcare and addressing the growing concern of lifestyle diseases.
'Health facilities are being encouraged to undertake self-assessment under the Indian Public Health Standards 2022 and National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS)', Nadda stated.
The Union Health Minister also highlighted the need for enhancing capacity of health administrators to ensure timely and effective decision making, working on the program implementation plans, enhancing the capacity of ASHA workers and community health workers, strengthening and institutionalising the hub-and-spoke model of digital health intervention and monitoring and assessment of health impacts.
Nadda urged the young officers to have an impact survey done of the benefits that have accrued from the programmes of the Health Ministry at the ground level.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr V.K. Paul, Member (Health), NITI Aayog stated that the underlying motivation behind today's paradigm for health is achieving the goal of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) to ensure that every citizen has access to quality healthcare without financial hardship.
He stated that health coverage today not only entails curative treatment but also promotive, preventive, palliative, rehabilitative and therapeutic.
'As many as 90 per cent of essential interventions for UHC can be delivered through primary healthcare systems' and 'an estimated 75 per cent of projected health gains under the SDGs can be achieved through primary healthcare system,' Paul added.
He highlighted that countries with strong primary healthcare have higher life expectancy, better health outcomes, lower medication use and overall lower medical costs. Dr Paul highlighted that thanks to AB PMJAY, hospitalisation rates in India has increased by 40 per cent.

Over 200 countries have adopted and embraced Yoga, and this is a matter of pride for every Indian. From the land of Telangana, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Modi for introducing Yoga to the world. Celebrations should be held in every corner of the country on June 21." Highlighting the nationwide fervour for Yoga Day, Reddy added, "Today, we have organised a 24-hour countdown here at LB Stadium. Tomorrow, I will be participating in the Yoga Day celebrations in Visakhapatnam alongside 5 lakh people — a proud moment for Telugu-speaking states." Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu praised the initiative and congratulated Kishan Reddy for organising the countdown event. "Yoga is not just a one-day event. It should be a lifelong practice. He urged the youth to embrace Yoga with dedication: "This is not for commission or omission, but a mission, a passion for the nation." Naidu also touched upon India's growing global stature, crediting the success of operations like 'Sindoor' to the strength and resilience of the Indian armed forces and scientific community. 'Uniting the world through Yoga is a noble path toward global peace. Let's promote Yoga in every household — among men, women, and children — as a timeless health science for all.' The countdown event at LB Stadium served as a vibrant prelude to the International Yoga Day celebrations scheduled across India on June 21, with Prime Minister Modi expected to participate in the main event at Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. "World is enthused to celebrate the International Yoga Day": Kishan Reddy after participating in 24-hour countdown event

Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], June 20 (ANI): Union Minister G Kishan Reddy has said that the whole world is enthused to celebrate the International Yoga Day on 21 June. He also said that many participated in the 24-hour countdown event ahead of International Yoga Day at Lal Bahadur Stadium in Hyderabad on Friday. 'The whole world is enthused to celebrate the International Yoga Day on 21 June. There is no place in India that will not organise an event tomorrow,' Kishan Reddy told ANI. 'Thousands of people participated in the 24-hour countdown event in Hyderabad today... Actors, High Court judges, Army officers, central paramilitary, and many others participated in the programme... I request all people that there should be no house left where Yoga isn't practised tomorrow,' he added. Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma and Former Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu practised Yoga at Lal Bahadur Stadium, Hyderabad, during the 24-hour countdown event organised by the Ministry of Steel, Ministry of Coal and Ministry of Mines ahead of the International Yoga Day tomorrow. The country is gearing up to celebrate the 11th International Day of Yoga on June 21. The government is organising a multitude of events nationwide to mark the occasion, with 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health' as this year's theme. Yoga Sangam, the main event, will orchestrate a synchronised mass yoga demonstration based on the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) at over 1 lakh locations across India on June 21, 2025, from 6:30 AM to 7:45 AM. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the national event at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. This collective celebration aims to reaffirm our shared commitment to the timeless practice of yoga and its enduring relevance in today's world. An invaluable gift of ancient Indian tradition, Yoga has emerged as one of the most trusted means to boost physical and mental well-being. The word 'Yoga' is derived from the Sanskrit root 'yuj', meaning 'to join,' 'to yoke,' or 'to unite.' It symbolises the unity of mind and body, thought and action, restraint and fulfilment, harmony between human and nature, and a holistic approach to health and well-being. Recognising its universal appeal, on December 11, 2014, the United Nations proclaimed June 21 as the International Day of Yoga by resolution 69/131. India proposed the draft resolution establishing the International Day of Yoga, which was endorsed by a record 175 member states. Prime Minister Narendra Modi first introduced the proposal in his address during the opening of the 69th session of the General Assembly on September 27, 2014. The date of June 21 was chosen as it is the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. This day represents a symbolic harmony between nature and human wellness and is important in many cultures. (ANI)

After months of delay, Maharashtra approves ₹45 crore for haemophilia drugs

Mumbai: After months of disruption caused by the Centre halting the supply of life-saving anti-haemophilic factors (AHFs), the Maharashtra government has sanctioned ₹45 crore for the urgent procurement of clotting factor injections used in the treatment of haemophilia. This includes Factor VII and Factor VIII (both plasma-derived and recombinant forms), Factor IX, and FEIBA (Anti-Inhibitor Coagulant Complex). These essential drugs are critical for preventing fatal bleeds in patients with haemophilia, a rare genetic blood-clotting disorder. An AHF is a protein naturally produced in the human body that plays a crucial role in blood clotting. The state's approval, formalised in a government resolution dated June 18, covers the purchase of over 100,000 vials of AHFs. This includes 25,147 vials of Factor VIII, 21,835 vials of Recombinant Factor VIII, 18,520 vials of Factor IX, and 4,605 vials of FEIBA. These medications fall under the government's essential drug list and will be distributed across Maharashtra through designated day-care haemophilia centres. The intervention comes in response to a policy shift by the Union health ministry, which earlier redirected funding from tertiary medical colleges to district hospitals. Previously, centrally allocated funds were used by institutions like Mumbai's KEM Hospital to procure AHFs. However, under the revised guidelines, civic-run institutions such as KEM no longer qualify for central support. This has crippled services at KEM, despite the hospital treating over 950 haemophilia patients from across Maharashtra. In one instance, a 29-year-old IT professional from Mira Road, suffering from severe joint and muscle bleeding, was turned away by the Thane Civil Hospital and referred to KEM. Due to critical shortages, he received only two units of Factor VIII—far below the therapeutic dose based on body weight—sharply increasing the risk of long-term disability. In cases of internal or brain bleeding, such delays could be fatal. Crucial policy shift Dr Mahendra Kendre, assistant director (blood cell) at the Directorate of Health Services, said the state's decision marks a crucial policy shift to safeguard haemophilia care. 'The withdrawal of central funding from medical colleges like KEM disrupted access to life-saving treatment,' he said. 'With this dedicated state budget and procurement policy, we are ensuring patients are no longer left vulnerable and that treatment continuity is maintained across Maharashtra.' As per the new directive, AHFs must now be stocked at all haemophilia daycare centres across the state. These drugs are significantly more expensive than standard medicines—some costing up to ₹40,000 per vial—and are essential to prevent life-threatening bleeds and irreversible joint damage. While the state's intervention brings relief, systemic flaws still threaten treatment continuity. 'Companies bid without maintaining stock, and the system allows it. Patients are paying the price,' said Jigar Kotecha, secretary of the Mumbai chapter of the Haemophilia Society, an NGO. Frequent tender failures and delivery delays have left patients vulnerable. The new budget and streamlined procurement policy aim to fix these gaps, ensuring steady access to life-saving drugs and preventing further avoidable harm. The Haemophilia Society is demanding a more robust procurement framework, timely stock replenishment, and the inclusion of advanced therapies such as extended half-life factors and non-factor treatments for patients who develop inhibitors. In a letter to the health ministry, the NGO also urged the government not to deny AHF supplies to hospitals like KEM until a capable alternative is formally designated. 'We are not asking for luxuries; we are asking for survival,' Kotecha wrote. With no dedicated civil hospital in Mumbai and tertiary centres excluded from federal schemes, advocacy groups have urged Maharashtra to adopt successful models from states like Gujarat and Telangana. Until then, patients remain reliant on emergency fixes and fragile supply chains.
