Celebrities defy new red carpet dress code at Cannes Film Festival

Yahoo14-05-2025

The red carpet has officially been rolled out across the Promenade de Croisette, welcoming stars to the French Riviera for the annual Cannes Film Festival. Now in its 78th year, the event is a jewel in the calendar of both lofty cinephiles and polished fashionistas. Over 12 days, actors, directors, producers, influencers and the like will descend onto the carpeted steps — not just to promote their latest feature film at the high temple of world cinema, but also to turn a look.
This year, the fashion stakes were upped before the festival even opened its doors — after a change in the official dress code just hours before kick-off. Nudity has been explicitly banned (presumably also prohibiting the current celebrity favorite 'naked' dress trend that has dominated the red carpet in recent years); as has 'voluminous outfits' with large trains for the sake of traffic control. Some, like Halle Berry, dutifully obeyed the restrictions. 'I had an amazing dress by (Gaurav) Gupta that I cannot wear tonight because it's too big of a train,' the actor said at a news conference. 'I'm not going to break the rules.' Others brazenly persevered with their original wardrobe plans. Heidi Klum and Wan QianHui were the first rebels of the year, arriving in high-octane frocks with defiantly cascading trains.
Elsewhere at the opening ceremony, Bella Hadid wore a slinky Saint Laurent dress, debuting honey-blonde tresses. Jeremy Strong opted for a dusty rose tuxedo (the Jury photocall earlier in the day revealed he also owns a full tracksuit, and matching bucket hat, in the same color).

Eddington Trailer Previews Ari Aster's Polarizing Western Movie With Pedro Pascal

A new trailer for has been released. Eddington is the forthcoming A24 movie that is written and directed by Ari Aster. A contemporary Western starring Pedro Pascal and Joaquin Phoenix, the movie will be released in United States theaters next month. Check out the new Eddington trailer and poster below (watch more trailers and clips): The Eddington trailer previews tension between Phoenix and Pascal's characters, as both of them live in a small town in which everyone is angry at their neighbors, largely because of the COVID-19 pandemic. 'In May of 2020, a standoff between a small-town sheriff (Joaquin Phoenix) and mayor (Pedro Pascal) sparks a powder keg as neighbor is pitted against neighbor in Eddington, New Mexico,' the official synopsis reads. The cast of the movie also includes Austin Butler, Emma Stone, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O'Connell, Michael Ward, Clifton Collins Jr., Amélie Hoeferle, and William Belleau. Eddington had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival last month. The movie received polarizing reviews from critics; some, like Indiewire's David Ehrlich, praised its satirical take on COVID and modern times, while others, such The Times' Kevin Maher, felt that Eddington feels 'unsure of what it wants to say.' The film currently has a 65 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes with 49 reviews. Aster found himself in a similar position when Beau Is Afraid was released in 2023, as that movie also received mixed reviews. Prior to that, Aster directed Hereditary in 2018 and Midsommar in 2019. 'I felt like [Aster] wrote something that was all our worst fears as that lockdown experience was already a fracturing society,' Pascal said of the movie, via IndieWire, at Cannes. This was building toward an untethered sense of reality. There is a point of not going back. I was overwhelmed by that fear, and it's wonderful that it was confirmed by Ari.' Eddington will be released in United States theaters on July 18, 2025, from A24. ‘Eddington' Trailer: Joaquin Phoenix Gets Into Standoff With Pedro Pascal In A24's Covid-Era Western From Filmmaker Ari Aster

A24 has unveiled the first full-length trailer for Eddington, its latest film from Hereditary helmer Ari Aster, which is slated to hit theaters July 18 after premiering at the Cannes Film Festival. Starring Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal, the genre-bender is set during the Covid-19 pandemic, watching as a standoff between a small-town sheriff (Phoenix) and mayor (Pascal) sparks a powder keg as neighbor is pitted against neighbor in Eddington, N.M. He directed from his own script, with Luke Grimes, Deirdre O'Connell, Micheal Ward, Austin Butler, and Emma Stone rounding out the cast. Eddington drew a nearly seven-minute standing ovation in its launch at Cannes, where Deadline's Damon Wise praised Aster for being 'willing to go there' with his satire of modern-day America and all its challenges — 'a slice of history that we have yet to see properly shown on film, even though it happened only five years ago.' The film is financed and produced by A24. Aster produced alongside Lars Knudsen under their Square Peg Banner. Watch the trailer for Eddington at the link above. ‘Eddington' Trailer: Ari Aster's Western of Pandemic Paranoia Hits Theaters After Dividing Cannes

A24 has dropped the trailer for 'Eddington,' Ari Aster's modern western that divided the Cannes Film Festival after its Croisette premiere. The film will hit theaters nationwide July 18 — and it very well may 'hit' with heated debate. The film takes place in 2020 — yes, that 2020 — in the most visceral way, with the anti-mask local sheriff (Joaquin Phoenix) of the fictional Eddington, New Mexico, facing off against the town's COVID-guideline-advocate mayor, played by Pedro Pascal (the second of his three summer releases). The heavy-hitter cast also includes Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O'Connell, Micheal Ward, Amélie Hoeferle, Clifton Collins Jr., and William Belleau, all of whom represent various perspectives on the pandemic spectrum. More from IndieWire Pedro Almodóvar's Next Movie 'Bitter Christmas' Set for Spanish Theaters and Streamer Movistar Plus+ 'Pinch' Review: Taut Debut Highlights One Woman's Response to Sexual Harassment - and Complicity IndieWire reported last month on the film's polarizing audience response, with people truly either loving or hating the film, and few in between. The cast and crew addressed the controversial COVID epic's hot-button reactions at a Cannes press conference. 'It's very scary to participate in a movie that speaks to issues like this,' Pascal said. 'It's far too intimidating a question for me to address. I'm not informed enough. I want people to be safe and protective. I want very much to be on the right side of history … I felt like [Aster] wrote something that was all our worst fears as that lockdown experience was already a fracturing society. This was building toward an untethered sense of reality. There is a point of not going back. I was overwhelmed by that fear, and it's wonderful that it was confirmed by Ari.' 'I wrote this movie in a state of fear and anxiety. I wanted to try and pull back and show what it feels like to live in a world where nobody can agree on what is real anymore,' Aster added at the same presser. IndieWire's David Ehrlich wrote in his A- review that the director is 'exclusively interested in making the kind of films that should be reviewed straight onto a prescription pad, is too beholden to his neuroses for his latest movie to play like a cheap provocation. This time, however, there's a good chance those are your neuroses, too.' Prior to its release, 'Eddington' will open the Fantasia International Film Festival on July 16. It will be in theaters everywhere July 18. Watch the trailer below.
