Rookie QB Shedeur Sanders to play in Browns preseason opener against Panthers
Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said he hasn't determined yet who will start.
Joe Flacco, Cleveland's projected starting quarterback this season, is healthy but will not play. Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel will sit out while rehabbing from injuries, Stefanski said.
Stefanski announced the news prior to the team's joint practice against the Panthers on Wednesday morning in Charlotte.
'My expectation for Shedeur is no different than the rest of the guys,' Stefanski said. 'I just expect him to go out and operate. When you get in these preseason games you try to keep it very simple so guys can play very fast. It's all concepts that these guys know and don't have to think too much about.'
Stefanski said he wants to determine how much of the playbook Huntley can digest before the game before determining who starts and how to split reps at quarterback.
Pickett and Gabriel were scheduled to participate in 7-on-7 drills in practice, but not team drills.
The 6-foot-1, 212-pound Sanders fell to the fifth round of the NFL draft after winning the 2024 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm award following his final season playing for his father Deion Sanders at Colorado. Sanders remains fourth on the Browns' depth chart, but injuries have increased his reps in practice. He took some reps with the second team in practice Wednesday.
Sanders has battled some recent shoulder soreness, but Stefanski said that is no longer an issue.

Sanders played two seasons at Jackson State before transferring to Colorado, where he played for two more seasons. He played in 50 games in college, completing 1,267 of 1,808 passes for 14,353 yards with 134 touchdowns and 27 interceptions. He also ran for 17 touchdowns.
Panthers head coach Dave Canales previously said Bryce Young will start at quarterback against the Browns, a change from last year. The 2023 No. 1 overall draft pick did not play in the first two preseason games last year and only saw action in one series in the preseason finale.
Canales cited having a 'pretty young team,' saying he can't pass up the chance to get players some reps and develop some chemistry.

Questions loom over rest of Browns quarterback room after Flacco named the Week 1 starter
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Kevin Stefanski resolved the biggest storyline of the Cleveland Browns training camp by naming Joe Flacco the starting quarterback on Monday. But as is the case with the quarterback position in Brownstown, naming a starter for the Week 1 opener against the Cincinnati Bengals set off a new round of questions. The one at the top of everyone's mind is how long Flacco thinks he can hang on to the job? Of the 10 quarterbacks who have started a game for the Browns since they traded Baker Mayfield in 2022, Flacco is tied for fifth with five starts in 2023, when he went 4-1 and directed Cleveland to its third playoff berth since returning to the league in 1999. 'Well, we all know how that works. I mean, that's everybody in the league, but it's not really my job to look at it in that way. It's just to go out there and play my game. Kind of like I've been doing all training camp and not worrying about all that stuff, just going out there, playing my game and being the best I can,' Flacco said Tuesday. 'I felt like I was having a good camp with the reps that I was given, and that's all you can do.' Flacco would also become the 11th different quarterback in league history to start a Week 1 game when they were at least 40 years old. Even though Flacco was the only Browns quarterback who has not missed time during training camp because of an injury, Stefanski said the decision went beyond what has transpired for the last month. 'I understand with the injuries, how that may look, that's really not the case here,' he said. 'Joe performed really well, both in practice, in the joint practices, in the meeting room, you name it. What he's able to bring to the football team, he's earned that role.' Stefanski has not determined if Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel or Shedeur Sanders will be Flacco's backup. General manager Andrew Berry also has one week to determine if the team will indeed keep four quarterbacks on the roster. According to Sportradar, that has happened only five times since 2000. Sanders was limited due to an oblique injury. Flacco and the starters will see action in Saturday's preseason finale against the Los Angeles Rams, with the amount of playtime left to be determined. 'I think we all feel pretty good. You only get a certain amount of reps out there, and I think we've made the most of it, and I think that's every team in the league to a certain extent,' Flacco said. 'I think the good thing about this week is, we kind of get to put ourselves through a little bit of a game plan and simulate what we would be doing during the year. LSU's Brian Kelly 'bullish' on the No. 9 Tigers as he enters a pivotal 4th season
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — LSU coach Brian Kelly doesn't sound worried about managing expectations as he enters what could be a pivotal fourth season with the Tigers. Not even after a 2024 campaign in which LSU fell short of 10 victories for the first time since Kelly arrived on the bayou from Notre Dame. 'I love what I've seen about this football team and feel that's why I've been bullish on our team,' Kelly said. 'You got to go win the games and execute when you need to execute. But I like where we're at.' When Kelly was signed to a 10-year contract worth about $100 million after the 2021 season, he was expected to have LSU back in contention for national titles sooner than later. Instead, the Tigers failed to clinch a spot in college football's first 12-team playoff last season. After that, Kelly went about ramping up his program's already considerable ability to provide financial inducements to transfer players and high school recruits — starting with his own $1 million donation to the Bayou Traditions football fund. Next came a slew of signings out of the transfer portal to complement a handful of high-profile returning players — a couple of whom could have left for the NFL, but decided they were better off staying in Baton Rouge for another year. LSU has a likely Heisman Trophy candidate at quarterback in senior Garrett Nussmeier, who passed for 4,052 yards and 29 touchdown last season. On defense, they welcomed back play-making linebacker Harold Perkins, who was once widely projected to enter the draft, but decided instead to remain with the Tigers after a knee injury derailed his 2024 campaign. Kelly's compliments flow about each position group, even an offensive line that has lost four veteran starters — all of them taken in last spring's draft. 'I've coached for a long time, a lot of guys in the NFL, a lot of first-round draft picks,' Kelly said. 'I've got a pretty good eye for what an offensive line looks like. This group is going to be really good.' LSU is ranked ninth in the the preseason AP Top 25 Poll and will have a chance right out of the gate to move up. They visit No. 4 Clemson in Week 1, when LSU's Tigers will try to snap a streak of five straight season-opening losses. A better start Kelly asserted that his staff has built much of the offseason around the goal of looking sharper for a Week 1 match-up that would appear to be more formidable than any of the previous five LSU lost. 'If you're just reacting to not having a win in the opener to feeding them chicken wings instead of, you know, steak, then you're reacting in a manner that doesn't give you an opportunity to be successful,' Kelly said. 'We've addressed this in January. We addressed it with the guys that we brought in, and we addressed it in the way we trained our football team. We addressed it in spring ball and then into our offseason.' Going deep Nussmeier should have no shortage of speed and talent at receiver. Chris Hilton, Zavion Thomas and Aaron Anderson are the likely starters, with Nic Anderson, Barion Brown and Kyle Parker all pushing for playing time. 'I would be less than honest if I didn't say it's as deep (a receiver group) as I've ever had,' Kelly said, adding that Hilton and Brown Speaker 'can run past anybody.' 'The real deal here is that we're going to get over the top of a lot of defenses with those two guys,' he said. Line items Kelly went to the transfer portal to help revamp his offensive line. He lured Braelin Moore from Virginia Tech to play center, while Northwestern transfer Josh Thompson is expected to play right guard. LSU's lone returning starter is left guard DJ Chester. Sophomore Tyree Adams is expected to take over at left tackle. Second-year player Weston Davis has taken most first-team snaps at right tackle, but has seen some competition from freshman Carius Curne, a top 2025 recruit who is 6-foot-5 and 320 pounds,. Adams calls Curne 'the strongest freshman I have ever seen.' Defensive presence Perkins' return gives LSU two veteran leaders and established play makers at linebacker — the other being preseason AP All-American Whit Weeks. 'Presence is impactful right there,' Kelly said. 'People talk about missing somebody. You know, it's hard to replace great players, but it's even harder to replace great leaders. And those guys lead by example and make a huge difference.' Packers cornerback Keisean Nixon eager to keep proving skeptics wrong as he adapts to expanded role
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Green Bay's Keisean Nixon has heard the criticism about how the Packers' pass coverage could struggle without departed two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander. Nixon takes those words in stride. He notes that he's been doubted ever since arriving in the NFL in 2019 as an undrafted free agent from South Carolina. Even as he developed into a two-time All-Pro kick returner, Nixon remembered getting labeled as merely a special-teams guy or later as a nickelback. Nixon then played primarily cornerback in 2024 while stepping in for the injured Alexander, who played just seven games last season before getting released in June and eventually signing with the Baltimore Ravens. Alexander's exit means Nixon enters the season as the Packers' likely No. 1 cornerback. He's eager for the opportunity to face an opponent's top receiver each week. 'My confidence level is just through the roof right now,' Nixon said Tuesday. 'It doesn't really matter who's going to be out there. They're going to have to see me just like I've got to see them.' Nixon, 28, took a long road to get to this point. He spent his first three NFL seasons with the Raiders, emerging as a key special-teams performer but never playing more than 15% of the team's defensive snaps in any of those years. Nixon joined the Packers in 2022 while his role on defense gradually expanded. He played 28% of the Packers' defensive snaps in 2022, 73% in 2023 and 94% last season. 'With the Raiders, I wasn't really able to do anything,' Nixon said. 'I literally just sat there for three years, I guess making money just being on the team. They wouldn't trade me or get rid of me, so I was just there. When I finally got to Green Bay, I just kept checking boxes, checking boxes. They asked me to do something, I did it. Gave me another role, I did that. Gave me another role. Now I've got the biggest role they can give me.' Nixon made a career-high 88 tackles last season and was the only NFL defensive back to have at least three sacks, three forced fumbles and one interception. That has the Packers confident he can thrive as a full-time cornerback. 'He's competitive,' defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley said. 'He can play man coverage, which is important. You have to be able to play man to be on the outside. Because he can run, he can cover, he can change direction, and I like that he'll tackle. He's a physical guy. Teams are going to try to get your corners one-on-one and force them to tackle. And he's going to do that.' Nixon prepared for his expanded role by studying film and paying attention to other cornerbacks. He singled out Washington's Marshon Lattimore and Cleveland's Denzel Ward as two of his favorites because of the way they play man-to-man coverage. After being labeled by his perceived limitations, Nixon is eager to showcase just how well he can handle increased responsibilities. 'I just never let anybody put me in a box,' Nixon said. 'My confidence and my skill level has always been there. I just had to find a role to just get to where I want to go. Everything they've ever asked me to do, I always did it at a high level. That's just what it was. I've always been good at everything I do. That just comes with what God gave me. Now I've got the perfect way to show it on the biggest stage this year.' After saying at the end of last season that he didn't want to return kicks anymore, Nixon backed off that statement earlier this summer. Nixon said Tuesday he'd welcome the chance to keep returning kicks. 'With the game on the line, I want the ball in my hands, at the end of the day,' Nixon said. 'I don't think nobody can mess with me when I've got the ball in my hands. It's just being a Swiss Army knife, being able to do it. Some of the greats did it: Deion (Sanders), Charles Woodson, stuff like that. I just want to put my name in that hat.' NOTES: Packers coach Matt LaFleur said QB Jordan Love's role in Thursday's joint practice with the Seattle Seahawks would be 'very limited.'
