Batting for continuity? For head coach Gautam Gambhir, it's all about the result

New Delhi:
Moments after India pulled off a miraculous draw in the fourth Test in Manchester last month, head coach
Gautam Gambhir
turned up at the press conference in his usual feisty avatar. It was the only Test during the two-month long tour in which India had been trailing England for almost four days.
Gambhir wasn't merely there to express his glee or relief.
He was there to reiterate that those who doubted his strategies weren't clued in. The coach feeds off the challenges thrown at him. In coming back from England with a 2-2 scoreline, he has been vindicated for some of the tough calls he took.
The next six months, starting with the Asia Cup in UAE next month, will be the first time Gambhir will truly get to work on the T20I team for a period of time. Yet, the current T20I side is more his baby. His stint as India's head coach started with
Suryakumar Yadav
being propelled to T20I captaincy ahead of
Hardik Pandya
.
With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli already retired from the format at the start of his stint, he could seamlessly drive home his philosophy in the dressing room. It didn't matter if India were the new T20I world champions.

'T20 World Cup, T20 side for India should be selected from IPL,' Gambhir said on former India off-spinner
Ravichandran Ashwin
's YouTube channel just before assuming the role with the Indian team. Gambhir isn't looking to rock the boat.

But by now, it has been well established that he doesn't mind dragging established names out of their comfort zones. He is rarely inhibited while giving more responsibility to unheralded cricketers — be it Suryakumar Yadav and Manish Pandey at KKR in 2014 or backing Ayush Badoni at Lucknow Super Giants.
Much of Washington Sundar's evolution as a Test allrounder is down to Gambhir's unwavering backing. Gambhir swears by continuity.
Despite all the talk of flexibility, he seeks stability at the top. The chatter in Indian cricket is that he would prefer an all format captain soon to build a common culture. Gambhir has been very clear with his vision. He walked in with an idea to rebrand the T20 team. India have often been accused of not being able to move with the times in the shortest format.
Gambhir has decided to address it with players who can be branded as T20 specialists.
He doesn't mind if the pool swelled. That's why Ramandeep Singh and Mayank Yadav were given their opportunities last year. India's attacking brand of T20 cricket over the last 12 months is proof enough of how the Delhi man wants to go about his job.
Poll
Do you believe Gautam Gambhir's strategies will lead India to success in T20 cricket?
Yes, absolutely
No, I have doubts
Maybe, it depends on execution
I need more time to decide
This is the format that brought him recognition as a tactician. He won two IPL titles with KKR as a captain more than a decade ago before returning as a mentor in 2024 and delivering their third.
He also stands out, being quite bullish about 'results' rather than process. Those who share the dressing room with Gambhir say that the coach loves breaking the game up into 120 balls rather than looking at it as a 20-over entity.
'Every ball has to have an impact' is his go-to phrase.
There's no room for getting comfortable. Roles are assigned as per skills, not batting numbers. He is comfortable with this facet of a modern-day T20 cricketer.
Shivam Dube, for one, will always get preference since he can go up the order and blast the bowling if the openers get off to great starts. There are no designated finishers.
Gambhir's inclination towards having allrounders stems from the need to have more options. The Asia Cup may give us a glimpse of how he wants to go about his business in the next few months, but nothing is cast in stone yet. With the success in Champions Trophy and England, things have started to fall in place for Gambhir. Till the transition button is pressed in ODIs, it won't be surprising to see a few unexpected moves in T20 cricket.

‘Hopefully, we will play our best cricket': Harmanpreet Kaur ahead of Australia series and World Cup

The Indian skipper, Harmanpreet Kaur, hopes to lead India to their maiden World Cup as she looks forward to what is a very important next few months for her and her side, as per the official website of the International Cricket Council (ICC). "Personally, this tournament is very important for me. This is a home World Cup. Home World Cups are special for every player. I have a lot of experience batting at No.4, I am just looking to contribute to the team," said Harmanpreet Kaur, who will captain India for the first time in the marquee tournament, as quoted from the official website of ICC. A notable omission for India is Shafali Verma, who also missed out on a spot in the recent ODI series against England. The opener had returned to the T20I side in the same series and was a part of the India 'A' side against Australia 'A'. However, the selectors have opted for stability as the team heads into this all-important tournament. "She is playing for India 'A' in Australia. She is a part of the system. We are keeping an eye out for her. The more she plays, the more experience she will gain for the future," said Neetu David, Chief Selector, India Women's Team. "Our team did well in England. We have been working on this squad for a long time now. I think the team we have picked is the best, so we don't want to play around with the team ahead of the World Cup. We just want Shafali to keep playing and gain some experience," David has finished as runners-up twice, in 2005 and 2017, but has yet to claim the title. However, Harmanpreet Kaur believes her side has played enough cricket together and possesses everything needed to finally go all the way. "The same team played in the England series, and we have been playing together for a long time now. Team looks quite balanced to me and hopefully, in both — Australia series and the World Cup, we will play our best cricket," the captain said.

'The most beautiful bride': Leon Draisaitl's wife Celeste Desjardins reacts to Warren Foegele and Alexandra Servos' Toronto wedding

Images via Instagram/@alexandrafoegele Los Angeles Kings forward Warren Foegele and his longtime partner Alexandra Servos have officially marked 2025 as their summer of love. Earlier in July, the couple said 'I do' in a romantic ceremony at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto, surrounded by glowing candles, flowers, and friends. Just weeks later, the pair were guests at Leon Draisaitl and Celeste Desjardins ' fairytale château wedding in France — a celebration that brought together a who's who of NHL stars. From Alexandra's lace gown to the league's star couples cheering them on, both weddings created moments that fans and friends are still swooning over. Inside Warren Foegele and Alexandra Servos' glamorous Royal York wedding When Warren and Alexandra exchanged vows at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto, the historic ballroom was transformed into a glowing backdrop of candles and floral arrangements. Alexandra walked down the aisle in a lace gown with a dramatic veil, before joining Warren at the altar where the two shared their first kiss as husband and wife. On Instagram, Alexandra posted a carousel of photos with the caption 'At last.' The images showed the bride's walk down the aisle, portraits in the hotel's wood-paneled rooms, and the couple leaving the ceremony hand in hand. The reaction from fellow NHL families was immediate and emotional. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Guacara: New Container Houses – Take A Look At The Prices! From Toronto's Royal York to a French château: NHL stars' fairytale weddings Only weeks after celebrating their own wedding, Warren and Alexandra traveled to France to attend Leon Draisaitl and Celeste Desjardins' destination wedding. Alexandra documented the trip on Instagram Stories, sharing a group table photo with Madison Brown, Mara Teigen, and others, as well as a short clip of Warren in a black suit and sunglasses crossing the château lawn. The star-studded guest list read like an Edmonton Oilers reunion. Evander Kane , Connor Brown, Tyson Barrie, Zach Hyman, Calvin Pickard, Cody Ceci , and Tyler Ennis all attended with their partners. Emma Barrie, wife of Tyson, posted multiple snapshots — from her own black evening gown to a group portrait featuring the Barries, the Hymans, and the Pickards. She also shared candid moments of Tyson laughing with Draisaitl, a selfie with Liv Hall, and a shot of the newlyweds' grand hand-in-hand arrival at the outdoor reception. Between their own Toronto vows and the French château festivities, Warren Foegele and Alexandra Servos have enjoyed a summer filled with romance, friendship, and the support of the NHL community. Their ceremony at the Fairmont Royal York glowed with intimacy and emotion, while their time in France highlighted the bonds shared among players and their families. As Alexandra summed it up with her caption 'At last' the moment was long awaited. For the newlyweds, this season wasn't just about walking down the aisle; it was about celebrating love in its grandest forms, from candlelit vows in Canada to champagne toasts under the French sky.
