KOTA KINABALU (May 29): Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS) president Tan Sri Anifah Aman said that he would consider contesting in the coming state election if that is the wish of the constituents in Bongawan.
Speaking to The Borneo Post today, Anifah explained that his recent statement on social media was about wresting the Bongawan constituency from incumbent Dr Daud Yusof.
The former Kimanis Member of Parliament said that it is PCS' aim to ensure that all Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) candidates are victorious in the election.
When asked if he intends to contest in the Bongawan seat as reported by several mainstream media recently, Anifah replied,' not exactly, I want to find the suitable candidate because I know my hardcore voters when I served as the Kimanis Member of Parliament.
'So I am just helping to identify the suitable and winnable candidate,' said Anifah who had served as former Malaysia Foreign Minister.
And when asked if the constituents insist that they want him to contest, Anifah replied, 'Then I will consider.
The recent reports said that the PCS president made the announcement of his intention to contest the Bongawan state seat in the upcoming Sabah state election via Facebook.
Anifah was quoted as saying that his decision is not aimed at merely challenging the incumbent, Dr Daud.
'I respect him as a colleague. However, the people of Bongawan want development equivalent to that of a full-fledged district. This has long been promised, and it should already have been enjoyed, but it is still not felt.
'Basic facilities such as a hospital, fire station, road connectivity, and other infrastructure are still neither planned nor championed. It remains quiet and neglected. Where is the political will that was once proclaimed?' Anifah was quoted as saying.

Over 10,000 show solidarity to Zara in KK

Thousands turned for the Himpunan Mega Solidariti #JusticeForZara at Padang Merdeka in Kota Kinabalu tonight. KOTA KINABALU (Aug 15): More than 10,000 people thronged Padang Merdeka here tonight to show solidarity to the late Zara Qairina Mahathir. Members of the public started gathering at the field as early as 7pm, carrying placards and banners depicting their support for the Form One student. The venue was visibly packed after 8pm, with several government and opposition leaders and members also spotted at the scene. It was understood that the event was organised by a coalition of non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Irwan Idrus, who came with five friends and family members from Tanjung Aru, attended the gathering to show his support to the late Zara and family. He expressed frustration that the case has been going on for some time but there is still no conclusion, as he lamented slow action by the relevant authorities. Irwan (second right) with family and friends attending the gathering to show support to the late Zara and family. 'So we hope that with the power of the rakyat, we can pressure the authorities to provide a swift conclusion to the case so that we can find out what really happened to Zara,' he told The Borneo Post when met. Among the political leaders present was Sepanggar Member of Parliament Datuk Ts Mustapha Sakmud, who went on stage and joined the public in demanding justice for Zara. Mustapha told the crowd that he forgives all those who tried to implicate his wife in the case, a rumour that had previously spread on social media. Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) legal advisor Chin Tek Ming also went on stage and addressed the crowd in a show of solidarity. Other Warisan members spotted were vice president Datuk Junz Wong, Putatan chief Datuk Uda Sulai as well as Darau assemblyman Datuk Azhar Matussin. State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew also spoke to reporters at the location. Liew said they gathered there as concerned citizens to reaffirm the ''No' to School Bullying' message, and to advocate for institutional reforms in residential schools. She proposed the pressing need to do away with any 'reactive approach' whereby the relevant authorities may only respond when a tragedy occurs, causing the loss of lives. 'We demand justice for 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir in unison. 'A promising life was cut short under mysterious circumstances. 'Her tragic death must not be in vain,' she said. Two more rallies are expected to he held on Saturday at Taman Chong Thien Vun and Lintasan Deasoka.

Gira, Chukpai to vie for PRS Youth Chief post at October TDC

Both ordinary supreme council members stated their intention to contest for the role soon after current Youth Chief Datuk Snowdan Lawan confirmed during a special supreme council meeting last Sunday that he would not seek re-election. Gira when contacted said he accepted the nomination after several party leaders proposed his name following Snowdan's decision. 'I humbly accepted the nomination, and I am prepared to offer my service and dedication to the party's youth wing,' he said. He expressed confidence that delegates would make an informed choice on the next Youth Chief, and pledged to strengthen the role of youth in PRS while contributing positively to Sarawak's development. 'My agenda includes nurturing and grooming youth leadership within the party; providing political training and mentorship for the younger generation; empowering the Youth members to be a positive and influential voice; equipping them with both hands-on skills and digital literacy to meet modern challenges; promoting PRS values in line with the vision of the GPS government and; supporting and participating in the development agendas of the Sarawak government, especially in uplifting the Dayak community,' he said. Chukpai, meanwhile, said his decision to contest stems from a commitment to amplify youth voices, address their concerns, and lead PRS in delivering for the Dayak community and all Sarawakians. He cited the inclusive leadership of the late party president Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing as an enduring inspiration. 'PRS was founded in 2004 and its first Youth Chief was Datuk Mong Dagang, an Iban. The second Youth Chief was Datuk Liwan Lagang, an Orang Ulu and the third, Datuk Snowdan Lawan, an Iban. 'Therefore it would be ideal should the next Youth Chief post be held by either Orang Ulu or Bidayuh to reflect inclusive representation. This is ideal to ensure that the party remains inclusive,' he said. The Masing legacy should be carried forward to strengthen inter-ethnic cooperation and empower the party's structures for the future, he added. Chukpai highlighted his long involvement in PRS Youth since the party's formation in 2004, including serving as Central Youth Vice-Chief under Mong Dagang, Belaga Youth Chief from 2004 to 2016, and PRS Murum Division Chairman since 2016. 'Based on this record and my commitments, I am confident I can contribute significantly to strengthening PRS Youth Wings if given the opportunity,' he said. Candidates must secure eight divisional nominations to qualify for the post, he said, adding that he is actively engaging divisional leaders to build support, ensure transparency, and address grassroots concerns. 'I am optimistic that, with sustained engagement, we can meet the nominations in due course,' said Chukpai. His vision is to empower Dayak youth, unite communities through inclusive leadership, and strengthen PRS as a credible voice for Sarawak's future, with a focus on education, economic opportunities, social cohesion, and heritage preservation. By virtue of the position, the elected Youth chief would automatically be appointed as party Vice President. Recent reports also suggest Lubok Antu MP Roy Gingkoi and Baleh assemblyman Nelson Kudi Jantai have also been urged by supporters to contest. Roy declined to comment when contacted, citing his attendance at the current Parliament sitting. Christopher Gira Sambang Kennedy Chukpai Ugon PRS TDC Youth chief

Tok Mat: Allocate at least one state seat for Sabah BN in each parliamentary constituency

MEMBAKUT: Barisan Nasional (BN) deputy chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has proposed that at least one state seat be allocated for the coalition's candidate in every parliamentary constituency ahead of the 17th Sabah state election. Mohamad, who is Umno deputy president, said the proposal reflects Umno-BN's aspiration for each parliamentary constituency in Sabah to field at least one representative from its ranks. "In the previous state election, some parliamentary constituencies or divisions had no BN representation at all. "This demoralised Umno-BN members and machinery in those areas, as they had nothing to work for during the election. "There is a risk that they may become demoralised and choose to leave the party, which is something we want to avoid. "But if there are two or three state seats within a parliamentary constituency and at least one is contested by a BN candidate, it would put party members in those areas at ease. "This is what I have been emphasising, and I want to ensure that such a situation does not happen again, as it did in the previous state election," he told reporters after opening the Umno division delegates meeting for Wanita, Youth and Puteri at the Membakut community hall today. Also present was Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Mohamad Alamin, who is also the Kimanis member of parliament. Mohamad said the matter would be brought for further discussion at the highest level, involving Umno's negotiation committee and the secretaries-general of component parties. "We will leave this to the negotiation committee and the secretaries-general of the parties to deliberate. "But this is my message to the secretary-general, our intention must not be sidelined.
