Gira, Chukpai to vie for PRS Youth Chief post at October TDC
KUCHING (Aug 13): Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang and Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon are expected to vie for the Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Youth Chief post at the party's triennial delegates conference (TDC) here this October.
Both ordinary supreme council members stated their intention to contest for the role soon after current Youth Chief Datuk Snowdan Lawan confirmed during a special supreme council meeting last Sunday that he would not seek re-election.
Gira when contacted said he accepted the nomination after several party leaders proposed his name following Snowdan's decision.
'I humbly accepted the nomination, and I am prepared to offer my service and dedication to the party's youth wing,' he said.
He expressed confidence that delegates would make an informed choice on the next Youth Chief, and pledged to strengthen the role of youth in PRS while contributing positively to Sarawak's development.
'My agenda includes nurturing and grooming youth leadership within the party; providing political training and mentorship for the younger generation; empowering the Youth members to be a positive and influential voice; equipping them with both hands-on skills and digital literacy to meet modern challenges; promoting PRS values in line with the vision of the GPS government and; supporting and participating in the development agendas of the Sarawak government, especially in uplifting the Dayak community,' he said.
Chukpai, meanwhile, said his decision to contest stems from a commitment to amplify youth voices, address their concerns, and lead PRS in delivering for the Dayak community and all Sarawakians.
He cited the inclusive leadership of the late party president Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing as an enduring inspiration.
'PRS was founded in 2004 and its first Youth Chief was Datuk Mong Dagang, an Iban. The second Youth Chief was Datuk Liwan Lagang, an Orang Ulu and the third, Datuk Snowdan Lawan, an Iban.
'Therefore it would be ideal should the next Youth Chief post be held by either Orang Ulu or Bidayuh to reflect inclusive representation. This is ideal to ensure that the party remains inclusive,' he said.
The Masing legacy should be carried forward to strengthen inter-ethnic cooperation and empower the party's structures for the future, he added.
Chukpai highlighted his long involvement in PRS Youth since the party's formation in 2004, including serving as Central Youth Vice-Chief under Mong Dagang, Belaga Youth Chief from 2004 to 2016, and PRS Murum Division Chairman since 2016.
'Based on this record and my commitments, I am confident I can contribute significantly to strengthening PRS Youth Wings if given the opportunity,' he said.
Candidates must secure eight divisional nominations to qualify for the post, he said, adding that he is actively engaging divisional leaders to build support, ensure transparency, and address grassroots concerns.
'I am optimistic that, with sustained engagement, we can meet the nominations in due course,' said Chukpai.
His vision is to empower Dayak youth, unite communities through inclusive leadership, and strengthen PRS as a credible voice for Sarawak's future, with a focus on education, economic opportunities, social cohesion, and heritage preservation.
By virtue of the position, the elected Youth chief would automatically be appointed as party Vice President.
Recent reports also suggest Lubok Antu MP Roy Gingkoi and Baleh assemblyman Nelson Kudi Jantai have also been urged by supporters to contest.
Roy declined to comment when contacted, citing his attendance at the current Parliament sitting. Christopher Gira Sambang Kennedy Chukpai Ugon PRS TDC Youth chief

Form tuai rumah association to strengthen rural voice, says Selangau MP
Tuai Rumah Balahin (right) presents an Iban sword, known as duku ilang, to Edwin after the officiating ceremony for the new longhouse. SIBU (Aug 15): Longhouse chiefs, or 'tuai rumah', should form their own association to strengthen their collective voice in representing rural communities and addressing local issues more effectively, said Selangau MP Edwin Banta. He said such a body would not only streamline the channelling of community concerns to the relevant authorities but also empower tuai rumah to coordinate action when public facilities are damaged or neglected. 'I often encourage tuai rumah to set up an association, not to burden them with extra work but to enhance their role in helping the people,' he said. He made the remarks when officiating at the new site for Rumah Balahin Blaja Dickson in Pasai Siong Tengah recently, which was attended by some 30 tuai rumah from Pasai Siong and Selangau. As an example, Edwin said that if a farm or plantation road is damaged, the association could press for immediate repairs from responsible parties instead of waiting for action from elected representatives or ministers. He stressed that community leaders must take a proactive stance in holding companies or individuals accountable for any damage to public infrastructure. 'Who actually damages these roads—YBs or companies? This is something that needs to be addressed collectively and systematically through a legal body like the Tuai Rumah Association,' he said. In addition to urging the formation of the association, Edwin called on longhouse chiefs to take a more proactive in official matters, such as submitting applications to relevant ministries and agencies for land surveys and securing legal land titles for their residents. To broaden their knowledge and exposure, the MP has also organised educational trips for community leaders both within and beyond Sarawak. 'For instance, from Sept 19 to 21, 2024, I brought 40 tuai rumah to attend the 100th anniversary celebration of Rumah Samu in Betong. 'This was not just about eating and drinking, but also exchanging ideas and learning how to be better community leaders,' he said. He suggested that the proposed Tuai Rumah Association could also plan its own educational visits as part of its leadership capacity-building efforts. At the same event, Edwin presented RM24,000 as an initial grant for the construction of the new Rumah Balahin – a move aimed at improving rural community infrastructure. association Edwin Banta lead tuai rumah

Celebrating Tok Nan: Gallery preserving former CM's legacy officially launched
(From left) Hang Tuah, Azizul, Abdul Karim, and Maulana engage in a discussion during the tour inside the gallery. — Photo from Sarawak Public Communications Unit BINTULU (Aug 13): The Tok Nan Gallery, which is dedicated to celebrating the life, vision and values of the former chief minister, the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem, was officially launched yesterday. Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said this marked another step in preserving the legacy of one of Sarawak's most beloved leaders. 'The gallery stands as a reflection of Tok Nan's aspirations for Sarawak, especially his dedication to unity, cultural harmony and inclusivity,' he said in a press conference after the opening ceremony at Universiti Putra Malaysia Sarawak (UPMS). Abdul Karim expressed his gratitude, on behalf of the Sarawak government, to UPMS for initiating the idea of the Tok Nan Gallery, which has existed in its current form since 2019. 'From this gallery, we can expand and share the perspectives, interests and hopes that the late Tok Nan held during his lifetime. The state government has channelled RM2.5 million to support programmes, activities and research, including scholarships for students pursuing Master's and PhD studies under the Tok Nan Chair,' he said. He said these efforts were part of continuing Tok Nan's vision, especially his commitment to strengthening racial unity in Sarawak. 'We know Tok Nan had no bias towards any ethnic group and everyone liked him. Even though his tenure as chief minister was only two years and eight months, the impact he left was profound – not only on Sarawak, but also on the leadership that succeeded him in uniting the state's multiracial and multi-religious communities,' he said. Abdul Karim hoped UPMS would continue conducting deeper research into Tok Nan's ideas and vision for Sarawak. 'He wanted to see Sarawak's culture, arts and unity flourish. This is what we must continue,' he stressed. The late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem, affectionately known as Tok Nan, served as the fifth chief minister of Sarawak from March 2014 until his passing in January 2017. Despite his short tenure, he was widely admired for his people-oriented policies, straightforward leadership style, and strong advocacy for Sarawak's rights within Malaysia. The Tok Nan Gallery houses exhibits, photographs, and memorabilia chronicling his life, career, and contributions. It serves both as an educational resource and as a symbol of the values he championed, integrity, inclusiveness, and development for all Sarawakians. Also present were UPMS deputy vice-chancellor (industry and community relations) Prof Dr BT Hang Tuah Baharudin, Tanjung Datu assemblyman and Tok Nan's son Azizul Annuar Adenan, and Tok Nan Chair chairman Assoc Prof Dr Mohamad Maulana Magiman.
