Celebrating Tok Nan: Gallery preserving former CM's legacy officially launched
BINTULU (Aug 13): The Tok Nan Gallery, which is dedicated to celebrating the life, vision and values of the former chief minister, the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem, was officially launched yesterday.
Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said this marked another step in preserving the legacy of one of Sarawak's most beloved leaders.
'The gallery stands as a reflection of Tok Nan's aspirations for Sarawak, especially his dedication to unity, cultural harmony and inclusivity,' he said in a press conference after the opening ceremony at Universiti Putra Malaysia Sarawak (UPMS).
Abdul Karim expressed his gratitude, on behalf of the Sarawak government, to UPMS for initiating the idea of the Tok Nan Gallery, which has existed in its current form since 2019.
'From this gallery, we can expand and share the perspectives, interests and hopes that the late Tok Nan held during his lifetime. The state government has channelled RM2.5 million to support programmes, activities and research, including scholarships for students pursuing Master's and PhD studies under the Tok Nan Chair,' he said.
He said these efforts were part of continuing Tok Nan's vision, especially his commitment to strengthening racial unity in Sarawak.
'We know Tok Nan had no bias towards any ethnic group and everyone liked him. Even though his tenure as chief minister was only two years and eight months, the impact he left was profound – not only on Sarawak, but also on the leadership that succeeded him in uniting the state's multiracial and multi-religious communities,' he said.
Abdul Karim hoped UPMS would continue conducting deeper research into Tok Nan's ideas and vision for Sarawak.
'He wanted to see Sarawak's culture, arts and unity flourish. This is what we must continue,' he stressed.
The late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem, affectionately known as Tok Nan, served as the fifth chief minister of Sarawak from March 2014 until his passing in January 2017.
Despite his short tenure, he was widely admired for his people-oriented policies, straightforward leadership style, and strong advocacy for Sarawak's rights within Malaysia.
The Tok Nan Gallery houses exhibits, photographs, and memorabilia chronicling his life, career, and contributions.
It serves both as an educational resource and as a symbol of the values he championed, integrity, inclusiveness, and development for all Sarawakians.
Also present were UPMS deputy vice-chancellor (industry and community relations) Prof Dr BT Hang Tuah Baharudin, Tanjung Datu assemblyman and Tok Nan's son Azizul Annuar Adenan, and Tok Nan Chair chairman Assoc Prof Dr Mohamad Maulana Magiman.

Sarawak Mulls Kuching Media Club House Proposal
KUCHING, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) will consider the proposal to establish a media clubhouse here as a meeting, idea-sharing and relaxation space for journalists and media practitioners in the state. Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier's Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and UKAS) Datuk Abdullah Saidol said the idea came from a conversation he had with several media representatives about the need for a dedicated space for them to rest and interact outside of their official duties. Speaking at the Sarawak National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) Main Committee Appreciation Ceremony and Sarawak Media Conference (SMeC) 2025 here last night, he said the proposal could be realised with the cooperation of the Sarawak government, government-linked companies and the private sector. "I strongly support this idea. Journalists work almost 24 hours a day and rarely have regular days off. Sometimes they don't have time to go home after their assignments, so this media clubhouse can be a place for them to gather, exchange ideas and relax," he said. According to him, the clubhouse can be equipped with facilities such as a small cafe, bathrooms, meeting rooms, light sports areas and recreational areas that provide comfort to media people to fill their relatively short break time while maintaining close relationships with each other. Abdullah said UKAS and the Federation of Sarawak Journalists Association are also holding further discussions to realise the proposal to send media people in the state to undergo professional training to further improve their skills. He said that discussions also included the implementation of a special welfare scheme for media people including insurance coverage, housing loan facilities, medical assistance and other appropriate assistance to ease the financial burden of journalists and their families. 'These are the things that are ongoing now and hopefully by the end of this year we'll probably confirm something and and some good news to our media people,' he said. In the meantime, he also announced a voluntary project involving UKAS officers and journalists to clean up the Dataran Pahlawan area here on August 24 in conjunction with the National Month celebration and to appreciate the sacrifices of the country's fighters.

Sarawak to take in Cambodian students, eyes direct Phnom Penh-Kuching flight route

Cambodian Senior Minister in Charge of Special Missions (Islamic Affairs) Oknha Datuk Dr Othsman Hassan said they are considering sending their students to further their education in fields like engineering, accounting and law. 'So far, no student from Cambodia has pursued further education in Sarawak because Cambodian students who received scholarships are all placed in Kuala Lumpur. 'We hope the Sarawak Premier (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg) will support the intake of these students… the total number of students has yet to be determined,' he said after paying a courtesy call on the Sarawak Premier at Kompleks Satria Pertiwi here today. In August, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said a total of RM4.5 million in zakat funds had been allocated by the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) to fully sponsor 100 Cambodian students at three educational institutions in Malaysia. Abdul Karim calls for better security for leaders' families after attack on Rafizi's son
Abdul Karim expressed confidence the police would carry out thorough investigations to ensure those responsible are brought to justice. – Photo by Chimon Upon KUCHING (Aug 14): Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has called for greater protection of national leaders and their families following the shocking assault on Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli's son in Putrajaya yesterday. He said such incidents, though uncommon in Malaysia, must be taken seriously. 'I have also just read about what happened in Kuala Lumpur regarding Rafizi's child, who was alleged pulled by two people on a motorcycle and one of them had jabbed him with a syringe. 'Incidents like this are rare, which is why it is rather shocking, and I feel that the safety of leaders and their families should now be safeguarded as well if such things can happen,' he told reporters when met at a hotel here last night. Abdul Karim had attended the State Gala Dinner held in conjunction with the 24th Asean-China Senior Officials' Meeting on the Implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea here, which was also graced by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Ministry of Foreign Affairs secretary-general Datuk Seri Amran Mohamed Zin. He pointed out that only police investigations would be to determine the motive behind the attack, which took place as Rafizi's son was leaving a shopping mall with his mother. Police confirmed that Rafizi's son was assaulted at a shopping mall in Putrajaya yesterday afternoon. Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the incident was believed to have occurred at 2pm at the mall's pick-up and drop-off area. 'The incident occurred when the victim was reportedly with his mother and their driver,' he told Bernama. Investigations are ongoing.
