‘Victory or Death' Alamo Letter plaque unveiled in Rusk County
HENDERSON, Texas (KETK) – Rusk County recently hosted 'Victory or Death' Voices from the Alamo and Beyond on April 21.

The event showcased the unveiling of a bronze Alamo Letter plaque and a ceremony highlighting the history of the Texas Revolution and its ties to the county. Members of both the Alamo Letter Society and the Sons of the Texas Revolution spoke at the dedication to commemorate Colonel William Barret Travis' stand at the Alamo.
Travis faced General Santa Anna and the Mexican Army in late February-early March of 1836 as a part of the Texas Revolution. Travis sent his 'Victory or Death' letter out to the rest of Texas while he and his forces were under siege during the Battle of the Alamo.
Now, the Alamo Letter Society has set out to get a plaque of that letter placed in all of Texas' 254 courthouses. With the unveiling of Rusk County's plaque they have one less county to go.

Applications will open to help Tyler residents find a home
TYLER, Texas (KETK) — Neighborhood Services will reopen its Housing Choice Voucher Program later this month to help Tyler residents find safe and affordable housing. First Baptist Church of Timpson damaged during severe weather The Housing Choice Voucher Program is a way for the federal government to help low-income families, older adults and disabled people find nice homes at a fair price. Those who are accepted can use the assistance to lease single family homes, apartments and townhomes. Applications will be entirely online from June 24 at 7 a.m. to June 26 at 6 p.m. and those without internet access can use the computers at the Rose Garden Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tyler Parks and Recreation along with Neighborhood Services will offer support during the application period. According to the City of Tyler, 2,000 applicants will be selected at random by a computer with honorably discharged veterans, elderly and disabled people receiving priority. Those wanting to apply will need to use or create an email address and help can be requested through 903-531-1303. Status updates on applications will be available starting on June 30. Chapel Hill ISD superintendent named finalist for Region 7 TASB award
CHAPEL HILL, Texas (KETK) – The Superintendent of the Chapel Hill ISD has been named a Region 7 finalist for the 2025 Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Superintendent of the Year (SOTY) award. Lamond Dean has been the superintendent of Chapel Hill since 2018 and has spent the past 25 years in education. Dean was a member of the class of 1991 at Chapel Hill High School and attended Tyler Junior College prior to receiving his bachelor's degree from Murray State. Dean later received his principal's certificate and superintendent certification from Texas A&M Texarkana. Texas Rangers Foundation continues to boosts youth sports The SOTY Award was established in 1984 to honor superintendents in public schools across Texas who demonstrate exemplary leadership skills and a strong commitment to student success and community engagement. Nominations for the award began in January when superintendents were nominated by members of their school boards. Following the nomination, the candidates are reviewed by the regional selection committee and one nominee is chosen from each region. 'Mr. Dean's leadership has transformed Chapel Hill ISD into a district focused on innovation, equity, and academic growth,' CHISD School Board President Les Schminkey said. 'We are proud to see his dedication recognized at the regional level.' Elysian Fields ISD announces interim superintendent Finalists from each region will now advance to the next phase where they will be interviewed by the state selection committee. Lufkin ISD unanimously approves 5 percent raise for teachers
LUFKIN, Texas (KETK) — The Lufkin ISD Board of Trustees has unanimously agreed on a 5 percent increase for all teachers and a new pay scale to ensure every LISD teacher will make at least $50,000 a year. East Texans react to failure of STAAR test bill The new pay scale for all teachers, librarians and registered nurses working for Lufkin ISD was approved June 2. The amendment was discussed in a special call board meeting. Although the adjustment is only meant for some positions, raises for other district members are still being discussed.
