A major crop in the region, mango cultivation spans 10,000 hectares in Mandya: DC

Deputy Commissioner Kumar on Monday said mango cultivation has expanded across approximately 10,000 hectares in Mandya district, and to support farmers with better market access, a Mango and Jackfruit Mela has been organised.
He was speaking at the inauguration of the 'Mango and Jackfruit Mela, Plant Expo, and Sales Fair – 2025', organised jointly by the district administration, zilla panchayat, and the Department of Horticulture.
Dr. Kumar highlighted that mango is one of the major horticultural crops in the region, with the district producing over 20,000 tonnes annually.
'The mela has been organised to ensure quality mangoes are made available to consumers at fair prices, to foster stronger farmer-consumer relationships, and to provide encouragement to mango growers,' he added.
Zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer K.R. Nandini said the mela is being held in the district after several years. Alongside the mango and jackfruit displays, a plant exhibition and sales event has also been arranged to provide high-quality fruit saplings to farmers and the general public, she added.
The mela features over 15 stalls, showcasing more than 40 varieties of mangoes brought by local farmers as well as growers from other districts. The focus is on promoting chemical-free and carbide-free fruits, the organisers said.
In addition, over 10 varieties of jackfruit are on display, drawing interest from consumers. The organisers have urged the public to visit the mela and make the most of this opportunity.
Superintendent of Police Mallikarjun Baladandi, Deputy Director of Horticulture Roopashree, and other senior officials were present.
The exhibition features popular varieties such as Badami, Raspuri, Mallika, Malgova, Sendura, Kesar, Sakkarebuthi, Imam Pasand, Totapuri, Langra, Rumani, Chilak Ras, Amlet, and Madanapalle — all of which attracted the visitors.
The mela also showcases more than 10 varieties of jackfruit, including Gubbi Bakke, Bakke, Cheluru Bakke, Ajji Halasu, Sakkare Pattana Onake, Gurugala Thota, and Chandra Halasu, each unique in flavor and texture, they said.
An array of grafted saplings and seedlings are being sold at government-approved prices at the expo. Varieties available include lemon, mango, guava (Allahabad Safeda), sapota (cricket ball), drumstick (PKM1), and arecanut, providing an opportunity for those looking to start or expand fruit cultivation.

Residents' body flags water, sewer, road issues in meeting with Noida Authority

Noida: The GB Nagar District Development Residents Welfare Association (DDRWA) has urged the Noida Authority to address a slew of civic issues, from erratic water supply and overflowing sewers to damaged roads, encroachments and unauthorised extensions. At a meeting with authority officials, RWA general secretary of blocks C to F, Sector 51 Sanjeev Kumar said residents in the sector had received visibly contaminated water on Tuesday after a four-day disruption last week due to a Ganga water shutdown from Haridwar. "The supply today had moving particles clearly visible in a glass tumbler. The Ganga water line bursts every second day, and at other times it is shut from Haridwar due to silt deposits. Sewers in every sector overflow without checks, and even after complaints, there is no hearing," said Kumar, who is also DDRWA's senior vice-president. DDRWA president N.P. Singh pressed for urgent redress, to which Noida Authority general manager R.P. Singh responded that while the Ganga water issue had been resolved, sewer complaints would be prioritised. "As soon as we get the complaints in writing, we will resolve the issue within two days," he assured. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Become Fluent in Any Language Talkpal AI Sign Up Undo You Can Also Check: Noida AQI | Weather in Noida | Bank Holidays in Noida | Public Holidays in Noida | Gold Rates Today in Noida | Silver Rates Today in Noida The meeting also took up the Authority's Section 10 notices, issued under the Uttar Pradesh Industrial Area Development Act, 1976, for unauthorised constructions. Members alleged that officials often "settle" such notices informally and urged that instead, the Authority levy fees at circle rates for regularisation, allowing the government to generate revenue. There was no official response to the proposal. The city's long-pending dog policy also came under discussion, with residents demanding its immediate implementation to curb recurring incidents of stray and pet dog attacks. N.P. Singh requested that large boards displaying the policy's key provisions be installed at major parks and sector gates. Authority GM S.P. Singh assured that the boards would be put up within a week. Other issues raised included road repairs, tree pruning, encroachment removal and sanitation in residential sectors. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Scholars, students celebrate World Sanskrit Day at Raj Bhavan

Hyderabad: The Sanskrit Academy of Osmania University, in collaboration with Raj Bhavan, celebrated World Sanskrit Day on Monday at the Raj Bhavan Community Hall. The event saw a large gathering of Sanskrit scholars, academicians, and students, creating an atmosphere of cultural pride and scholarly exchange. Jishnu Dev Varma, Governor of Telangana, attended as the Chief Guest and Prof. M. Kumar, Vice Chancellor of Osmania University, was the Guest of Honour. Among the audience were around 170 Sanskrit students from various Gurukulams who actively participated in Vedic chanting, Bhagavad Gita recitation, and other traditional presentations. A highlight of the programme was the release of the critical edition of 'Yoga Chintamani', an 18th-century yoga text meticulously edited by the Sanskrit Academy. The publication was formally unveiled by the dignitaries, marking an important academic milestone for the Academy. In his address, Prof. Kumar congratulated the Academy on its achievement and urged the younger generation to dedicate themselves to the systematic study of Sanskrit. He emphasised the relevance of Sanskrit texts in understanding the history, culture, and scientific heritage of the nation. With an insightful lecture, he explored opportunities in Sanskrit research and exhorted students to restore the ancient glory of the language. Prof. Kumar also assured the Academy of full support for its academic initiatives and called upon society to revisit the contributions of ancient Indian scientists, while encouraging further scholarly exploration in the field. Speaking on the occasion, Governor Jishnudev Varma highlighted the importance of Sanskrit in contemporary times, particularly in the context of nationalism. Quoting extensively from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, he illustrated how Sanskrit epics upheld national values without promoting invasion or colonisation. He also referenced great scholars and scientists like Panini, Aryabhata, and Bhaskaracharya, noting the enduring value of their works even in modern times. Bhavani Shankar, Joint Secretary of Raj Bhavan and a key organiser of the event, was among the Guests of Honour. Prof. Nilakantham, former Director of the Sanskrit Academy, rendered Sanskrit verses from classical texts and shared updates on the Academy's progress. The event, filled with traditional recitations and academic exchanges, was conducted by Prof. Penna Madhusudan, Director of the Sanskrit Academy. The celebration reflected the enduring relevance of Sanskrit in India's intellectual and cultural life, inspiring both seasoned scholars and young learners alike.

NGT nod for temple at Ulwe after assurance of no construction in CRZ

URAN: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has dismissed a petition challenging construction of the Tirupati Balaji temple at Ulwe in Navi Mumbai after the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), the project proponent, assured the tribunal via a sworn affidavit that no construction activity would be carried out in areas falling within the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ). The proposed temple, modeled after the Tirumala shrine in Andhra Pradesh, will be built at a cost of ₹ 70 crore (HT PHOTO) The proposed temple, modeled after the Tirumala shrine in Andhra Pradesh, will be built at a cost of ₹70 crore, on a 40,000 square metre plot allotted by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) to TTD in April 2022. The plot is located near the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. The groundbreaking ceremony for the temple was originally scheduled for August 21, 2022, but was cancelled following objections from environmentalists who said the plot was originally a wetland and demanded its restoration. The ceremony was eventually conducted on June 7, 2023 after the project received CRZ clearance. BN Kumar, director of the nonprofit NatConnect Foundation had approached the NGT, citing CRZ violations and contending that the plot was originally a wetland and fishing pond before it was filled up for MTHL casting work. A study by the Institute of Remote Sensing (IRS) at Anna University, commissioned by TTD, revealed that under the 2011 Coastal Zone Management Plan, 2,748.18 square metres fell within CRZ-1A (ecologically sensitive area), 25,656.58 square metres within CRZ-II (developed land areas), and only 11,595 square metres was outside the CRZ. However, as per the 2019 Coastal Zone Management Plan, the non-CRZ area was much larger, at 29,523 square metres. The proposed temple, roads, and drainage facilities were completely outside the CRZ as per the 2019 plan, the IRS concluded. On November 20, 2023, the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) approved the project and allowed fencing and landscaping work within the 50-metre mangrove buffer zone, but barred any structural construction in CRZ areas. Before the NGT, Kumar's counsel, advocate Ronita Bhattacharya, opposed the approval granted by the MCZMA, whereas TTD's counsel, advocate Harshavardhan Bhende, said they had already filed an affidavit clarifying the temple would be constructed entirely in the non-CRZ zone. During final arguments, TTD formally committed on oath that it would not undertake any construction in CRZ areas and would seek prior permission for any future work in those areas. Kumar's counsel accepted the undertaking, and with no further objections, the NGT dismissed the case on July 31, 2025. The order was uploaded recently. Despite the NGT's nod, concerns regarding the impact of construction activity on the environment persist. 'CIDCO's own records list the plot as flood-prone, and satellite maps from the Maharashtra Remote Sensing Application Centre (MRSAC) show a flood hazard line running through the site,' said Kumar. 'The wetland should have been restored, not repurposed.' Though the temple would be built on an elevated base, the surrounding areas are low-lying and vulnerable to flooding, Kumar added. 'This reality cannot be ignored.' Nandakumar Pawar from the nonprofit Sagar Shakti said, 'We welcome spiritual development, but CIDCO must ensure that ecological safeguards are not compromised.'
