Head of Alor Setar AKPK, Mohd Faizal Mohd Salleh, stated that the loan restructuring through the Credit Management Programme involved 7,668 bank financing facilities.
'This initiative offers a respite for many people to regain control of their finances in a more organised and realistic manner, offering repayment plans that suit their means.
'These numbers are not just statistics but reflect AKPK's efforts in providing effective assistance to those in need of financial support,' he said in a statement today.
According to him, the credit restructuring statistics in AKPK Kedah for 2024 show that credit cards are the largest contributor to debt issues, accounting for 43 per cent, followed by personal loans at 38 per cent.
Mohd Faizal said the restructuring of housing financing was seven per cent, while vehicle financing was five per cent.
He emphasised that early intervention is crucial, especially for debtors under the age of 45, who make up the highest percentage of AKPK clients—64 per cent or 4,885 cases, totalling RM269 million.
'At this stage of life, they are building their families as part of the sandwich generation (simultaneously caring for ageing parents and raising their children), and it is essential to prepare early for retirement.
'Beyond just avoiding bankruptcy and asset repossession, Alor Setar AKPK focuses on restoring the quality of life affected by debts,' he said.
He also urged the public not to let themselves remain trapped in financial difficulties but to seek solutions and work toward recovery with the agency's help.

AKPK provides free financial advice for MHIT policyholders
KUALA LUMPUR: The Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency (AKPK) has introduced a free financial management service to assist policyholders affected by premium increases for their medical and health insurance and takaful (MHIT) plans. In a statement today, AKPK said the initiative is aimed at enabling policyholders to make informed financial decisions while helping them maintain MHIT coverage in line with their overall financial capacity. 'Through this service, AKPK's financial advisors will conduct a financial health and needs analysis to help affected policyholders determine the level of premiums they can sustain with potential adjustments to their financial management plans. 'The goal is to help policyholders identify actions they can take to retain their MHIT coverage while managing their finances effectively,' it said. It added that policyholders can visit any AKPK branch nationwide to meet a financial advisor free of charge. AKPK chief executive officer Azaddin Ngah Tasir said the agency wants to ensure that policyholders affected by MHIT premium revisions understand all their options and do not lapse or surrender their policies due to other financial commitments. 'Our dedicated financial advisors are ready to work closely with policyholders and the Insurers and Takaful Operators (ITOs). 'We will guide them through a structured process, help them to analyse their budget, review their expenses, and ultimately, develop a sustainable plan to maintain their MHIT coverage,' he said. AKPK emphasised that to facilitate the financial management process, policyholders should bring the repricing notification letter, the accompanying Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) from their ITOs, and a current income statement or other proof of income. 'Nevertheless, policyholders with general enquiries or wishing to lodge a formal complaint are advised to contact their respective agents or ITOs,' it said. - Bernama

4,194 civil servant bankruptcies recorded from 2020 to June 2025
KUALA LUMPUR: The Insolvency Department recorded 4,194 bankruptcy cases involving civil servants between 2020 and June 2025, about 0.3% of the nation's 1.6mil public sector workforce. Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying said the Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency (AKPK) offers advisory services, financial management assistance and debt restructuring programmes for individuals facing serious financial difficulties. "For new officers, the Public Service Department conducts the Mind Transformation Programme, which provides early exposure to personal financial management to ensure they can manage debt prudently. "Civil servants are also bound by a rule requiring their net monthly salary to remain at least 40% of their gross income, to prevent them from falling into serious debt,' she said. She was responding to a question from Abdul Latiff Abdul Rahman (PN-Kuala Krai) on government measures to address the worrying trend of rising household debt, particularly among civil servants. As of March 2025, she said, Malaysia's household debt stood at RM1.65 trillion, or 84.3% of the GDP (Gross Domestic Product). "However, it remains manageable at the macro level, as household financial assets over the same period amounted to RM3.45 trillion, 2.1 times higher than total debt,' she added. On housing, the largest component of household debt, Lim said the government has introduced various affordable housing schemes, including Residensi Madani and PR1MA, taking into account specific situations such as in Johor Bahru, where the cost of living is high. — Bernama
