Brave boy 'raped by teacher from age of 14 comes' forward to reveal how 'attacks' nearly drove him to suicide

Daily Mail11-07-2025
A teenager who says he was sexually abused by a teacher from when he was 14 says her behavior left him badly traumatized and on the verge of suicide.
Grant Strickland claims he was abused by former kindergarten teacher Nicole Ballew Callaham, 33, from 2021 until 2023 in Anderson, South Carolina.
Authorities say the alleged abuse started when he was 14, his mom claims they first met at an audition for a Legally Blonde musical production which Callaham directed.
Callaham, who is married with children, is facing three counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor and one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
She voluntarily handed herself into the Anderson County Detention Center on Thursday, her bond hearing was later that day.
Speaking outside of court following the hearing, Strickland told reporters he almost didn't survive the ordeal
He said: 'I would never want someone to go through what I went through, I don't think most people could be strong enough to survive it. Because I almost didn't.'
Strickland added that he hoped him coming forward would increase awareness of the issue.
He added: 'All I really want the public to know is that though it's a traumatic event I am here to fight and I'm not going to back down.'
Strickland continued: 'I think awareness needs to be brought to things like this, just because I am a man doesn't mean it should be shunned away. I was a child, I wasn't a man, I was a boy.'
On seeing Callaham, who appeared in court via livestream, he said he felt like a weight had been lifted.
'I don't think I would've been able to move on if it wasn't for the support from family and loved ones, and being able to come out about it', he added.
The Anderson County Sheriff's Office said that at the time of the allegations Callaham was an Anderson County School teacher, she has since resigned.
The school district said that she had worked at Homeland Park Primary School from 2017 until she resigned in May of this year.
In a statement, the sheriff's office said that Callaham would sign Strickland out of school and served as a supervisor for after-school activities.
Authorities said these repeated interactions led to a prolonged pattern of abuse, which they corroborated with warrants and help from Strickland and his family.
They added that Strickland came forward after he turned 18, having spent time processing the 'trauma associated with the abuse'.
At her hearing on Thursday she was issued a $40,000 bond for the charges in Anderson County. She was seen crying in footage from the court.
She is also facing a number of charges in nearby Greenville County, if the bond is met she will be transported there for a separate bond hearing.
The Greenville Police Department brought similar charges against her, alleging the conduct extended into their jurisdiction as Strickland attended school there.
Following her arraignment, she will be transported to the Greenville County Detention Center for charges filed by the Greenville Police Department.
Callaham is charged with eight counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor, and four counts of unlawful conduct towards a child.
Strickland's mother released a statement at the hearing also, saying: 'We truly thought she believed in his talent and was hoping him grow and build his confidence.
'We trusted her completely with our son, as she seemed to be a wonderful mentor to our son and other young actors and actresses by investing in them.
'Looking back, it sickens me knowing Nikki manipulated our son and our family. She was waiting on this opportunity, and she found the perfect victim and family to prey on perfect meaning.
'She saw our son's innocence and that he was very easily manipulated and drawn into her perfect meaning.
'She saw a family who had a lot of love and kindness to share with those who needed it.'
The Clemson City Police Department is also investigating the case. Her next bond hearing in Greenville is set for Monday at 10am.

Dem rep torches Trump's DC police takeover

Published: | Updated: An outspoken Democrat lawmaker had choice words for President Donald Trump's decision to take over Washington, D.C.'s police force. Representative LaMonica McIver, who serves New Jersey 's 10th Congressional District, believes that Trump's rhetoric of 'Liberation Day' is rooted in racism. 'When he says, 'Oh,' you know, 'it's Liberation Day,' and all of these things, those are, you know, ways of him saying, 'Oh, it's white power,' McIver said during an appearance last week on the Defending Democracy Podcast hosted by Democratic Party election lawyer Marc Elias. 'Those are racist remarks,' the Congresswoman told Elias. 'His number one targets are cities that are led by black mayors.' The New Jersey Democrat also complained that Trump's 'number one targets are sanctuary cities that ... support immigration.' McIver is currently facing federal charges for storming an ICE facility in her home state of New Jersey earlier this summer. She has asked for the charges to be dismissed. The congresswoman has pleaded not guilty to three counts of assaulting, resisting, impeding, and interfering with federal officials related to actions in the ICE facility skirmish. 'Sic the military on the very people that they're supposed to be protecting in these cities and then expect a certain response so that it can escalate — I truly believe that that's what the president hopes for,' McIver told Elias. White House spokesman Harrison Fields told The New York Post that McIver, was 'an unserious person' who had a 'catfight in front of an ICE facility.' Trump announced last Monday that Washington's Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) was now under the control of Attorney General Pam Bondi and the Department of Justice (DOJ). Bondi shared Tuesday via a post made on X that 'there have been a total of 465 arrests, 68 guns seized, and charges for homicide, narcotics, and firearm offenses' since the DOJ started policing the nation's capital. Trump's actions were spurred in part by high-profile attacks that have taken place this summer.

Chiefs player Felix Anudike-Uzomah to miss entire NFL season

By MAX WINTERS, US DEPUTY SPORTS EDITOR The Kansas City Chiefs have placed Felix Anudike-Uzomah on injured reserve, meaning he will miss the entire NFL season. The defensive end, a former first-round draft pick, will be sidelined for the foreseeable future with a hamstring injury. He picked up the injury during Friday's preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks while chasing down rookie quarterback Jalen Milroe. Anudike-Uzomah eventually pulled up on the sideline. 'That's a tough thing,' Reid said Monday. 'He's worked hard... It is disappointing for him, I know, because he works so stinking hard.' It is a major blow to Patrick Mahomes and his teammates' hopes of regaining their Super Bowl crown after February's heavy loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans. Anudike-Uzomah, who grew up 13 miles from Arrowhead Stadium, has played in 34 games for the Chiefs, starting three times. He has made eight tackles for loss, three sacks, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. His career highlight so far was a sack on C.J. Stroud in their playoff win over the Houston Texans last season. The Chiefs also waived running back Elijah Young, re-signed defensive end Owen Carney and added linebacker Xander Mueller on Monday. The reigning AFC champions did have some good news last week, however, when it was announced that Rashee Rice will be available for the first four games of the season. The wide receiver will have a disciplinary hearing with the NFL on September 30 in New York after causing a chain-reaction crash last year on a Dallas highway that left multiple people injured. Rice still has to serve a 30-day jail sentence in the future for. He already agreed to pay more than $1million in a settlement with the victims. Rice is returning from a knee injury that cut short his sophomore season in the NFL following a standout rookie campaign. He would be eligible to play the first four games, including a Super Bowl rematch against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2, before his hearing.

Two suspects in viral Cincinnati brawl walk free after having their bond slashed

Two women accused of being involved in a brutal Cincinnati brawl that went viral have been allowed to walk free from jail after having their bond slashed. DeKyra Vernon, 24, and Aisha Devaughn, 25, both accused of felonious assault and aggravated rioting last month, have now released from the Hamilton County Jail on bond. The pair had their bond significantly reduced while being arraigned on Thursday, with Vernon's being slashed from $250,000 to $25,000 at ten percent, and Devaughn's reduced from $300,000 to $25,000 at ten percent, Fox News reported. Footage of the wild brawl which broke out in the early hours of July 26 shocked the nation. Six people were left severely injured after a large group descended on several people outside of a nightclub in downtown Cincinnati's business district. A man in a white t-shirt was shoved to the ground and beaten by two men as other members of the crowd jeered and joined in. The group beat the man for nearly a minute as he lay in the middle of the street, appearing to step on his head multiple times. When the barrage of attacks temporarily stopped, the victim was seen attempting to stand - but immediately fell over in apparent disorientation. A woman, identified as Holly, had attempted to break up the fight before she was knocked unconscious and fell to the floor. Brutal images show Holly sustained a black eye and a swollen bruised face. But she claimed police 'acted nonchalant' when they arrived at the scene and did not call for backup or an ambulance. Holly defended her actions that night, noting that she was the only person who decided to jump in to help the man because it was 'the right thing to do.' So far, seven people have been charged in relation to the brutal beating. Patrick Rosemond, 38, Jermaine Matthews, 39, Montianez Merriweather, 34, and Dominique Kittle, 37, have been charged with three counts of felonious assault, three counts of assault and two counts of aggravated rioting. Rosemond, a convicted felon who is believed to have been the 'main instigator' in the incident, was said to have 'assaulted each and every single victim' in the beatdown, Fox News reported. Hamilton County Common Pleas Court heard that he allegedly punched Holly and 'almost caused her death,' and was allegedly seen dancing and 'taunting' the victims. He pleaded not guilty to all charges and was permitted release on a $500,000 bond. Merriweather is also facing a federal gun charge for illegally owning a weapon as a felon, Fox News reported. Matthews posted his $250,000 bond immediately following his arrest. Gregory Wright, 32, was indicted on charges of aggravated riot and felony aggravated robbery for allegedly stealing the victim's necklace while others beat him. '[He] did by force rip the necklace off the victim while he was being assaulted by four or more co-defendants attempting to cause serious physical harm,' the criminal complaint obtained by the outlet said. The Cincinnati Police Department is on the hunt for an eight suspect in the brawl, and released a photo of the man asking for assistance in identifying him. Police Chief Teresa Theetge said the incident was not connected to the jazz festival that was going on in Cincinnati that weekend. 'This was a sudden dispute between individuals following a verbal altercation,' she added. 'What I saw on video is not the Cincinnati I know and love,' Hamilton County Prosecutor Connie Pillich said, Fox News reported. 'These charges hold those involved in the attack accountable.' Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy wrote on social media: 'I spoke to Holly earlier today (the woman tragically assaulted in Cincinnati this weekend). She's a single working mom who went to a friend's birthday party. It's unconscionable that there were no police present in that area of Cincinnati on a Friday night, or even an ambulance to take her to the hospital.' Gregory Wright (left), 32, was arrested and charged with alleged aggravated riot and aggravated robbery. He allegedly stole the victim's necklace while others beat him Patrick Rosemond (left) and Dominique Kittle (right) have been charged with three counts of felonious assault, three charges of assault and two charges of aggravated rioting Vice President JD Vance said the brawl was particularly offensive because a woman was 'sucker punched' by a 'grown man.' 'What I saw, and I haven't seen the full context, but what I saw is a mob of lawless thugs beating up on an innocent person. 'It's disgusting and I hope every single one of those people who engage in violence is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. 'I don't know the full context, but the one part that I saw that was really gruesome is you had a grown man who sucker punched a middle-age woman,' he added, referencing the woman, Holly, who Ramaswamy spoke to. 'That person ought to go to jail for a very long time - and frankly, he's lucky there weren't some better people around because they would've handled it themselves. 'We have got to make great American cities safe again for families and children, the only way to destroy that street violence is to take the thugs who engage in that violence and throw their a**es in prison.'
