Ryan Kent's Rangers warning rings out as giddy Seattle Sounders fans go all in

Daily Record12-05-2025

Kent is starting to find his groove in the MLS with two assists against St Louis City as sharpness builds
Ryan Kent felt like he had "two right feet" when he first joined Seattle Sounders.
The former Rangers player has been out of action for a considerable time after his Fenerbahce switch turned sour.

But now he's flying with the MLS franchise. After brief cameos off the bench in his first few games, Kent showed Sounders fans what he can really do with two assists in their win against St Louis.

Head coach Brian Schmetzer has been building Kent up and has been trying to work how best to get him on the grass for as long as possible.
'He's a super talented player,' Schmetzer said. 'How do we get him on the field? How do we reward Paul for all his hard work? It's a competition.'
The ex- Liverpool youngster may not be fit enough to bang out a full 90 minutes, but he's now very much in contention for a regular starting slot.
And Kent admits he's come a long way since he first arrived at Lumen Field.
'My first couple of weeks, I felt like I had two right feet,' he said. 'But as the weeks have progressed, I'm starting to feel sharp again. I'm starting to feel good with the ball.
'I need to show them I can come on in games like this and make an impact, show them I'm ready to go from the start.'

And as far as Sounders fans are concerned, Kent is doing just that. One posted: "Ryan Kent is the real deal, his European experience is showing big time, he will be important at the FIFA CWC for the team to have any chance for even a single point."
Another added: "That's what you get with a player of some quality in this league," while one fellow fan took it to the extreme, declaring: "Thank you Ryan Kent for changing my life."
However, Rangers fans were on hand to offer a note of caution, with one warning: "Great when he's running at defenders. Now watch the next 3 matches when he doesn't do it once. Same story with him all the time."

Mystery over ex-Rangers coach's next move as he ‘takes charge of new club days after having talks with Bayer Leverkusen'

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) HE looked set to swap one top European club for another after his short managerial stint in Belgium came to an end. But despite reportedly having talks with Bayer Leverkusen lined up, this former Rangers coach has in fact been spotted 6,000 miles away instead. 1 He was Philippe Clement's right-hand man at Ibrox Credit: Getty Andries Ulderink, previously Philippe Clement's No.2 at Ibrox, was most recently the manager Antwerp - until a few days ago. The Dutchman took over as boss in March - less than three months after his Gers exit - but his time in the dugout is over already, having won just two out of his 13 games in charge. Antwerp chiefs decided not to extend his contract beyond this season which led to questions around his next move. According to Voetbal International, Ulderink revealed he was set to travel to Germany for discussions with Bayer Leverkusen about being Erik Ten Hag's new assistant manager. It's claimed the pair know each other well, and the ex-Man Utd and Ajax gaffer - who replaced Xabi Alonso in the hot-seat last week - is keen to work with him in the Bundesliga. But in a bizarre turn of events, Ulderink, 55, looks set to make a swift return to management in South Africa instead. The experienced coach has been spotted taking a training session at one of his former clubs - Cape Town FC - and local reports suggest his appointment will be announced imminently. It's an unusual move at this time of the season as he takes charge just days before the relegation play-offs. The Citizens finished second-bottom in the league and will battle it out in a three-team group to hold onto their top flight status. The second and third placed teams in the second tier face off against the club in Cape Town City's position each season, with six games played in total - each side playing one another home and away. Rangers fans react as 49ers takeover completed The team which finishes top of the group will compete in the top division next season. The play-offs get underway on June 11, with Cape Town City's first game scheduled against Casric Stars three days later. They then face their first game against Orbit College on June 18. It's unclear at this stage whether or not Ulderink will stay in South Africa beyond the play-offs, or if he plans to take up the job at Bayer Leverkusen after helping his old club steer clear of the drop. Man Utd in transfer contact with Martinez 'for six months' amid Onana struggles

Manchester United are stepping up their search for a replacement for Andre Onana, with Red Devils chiefs now eyeing a move for Aston Villa's World Cup winner Emi Martinez Manchester United have been in contact with Aston Villa keeper Emi Martinez for the past six months as they consider signing a replacement for Andre Onana. Martinez has starred for Aston Villa since arriving from Arsenal five years ago. He played a key role as they reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League this season, before securing European qualification for a third successive year. The 32-year-old also won the World Cup with Argentina during his time at Villa Park. ‌ But it appears increasingly likely that he will leave the Second City this summer. Villa's failure to qualify for the Champions League means that a big sale will be needed to comply with Profit and Sustainability rules. ‌ Martinez appears to be a prime candidate to move on, with Villa eyeing a move for Espanyol's Joan Garcia. The Argentine has been heavily linked with a transfer to a Saudi Arabia club. But his standing as one of the Premier League's top keepers will also attract the interest of big teams in Europe. United look to be one of them amid Onana's awful form in the season just gone. The Cameroonian kept just nine clean sheets in his 38 Premier League appearances, conceding 44 goals in the top-flight as the Red Devils finished 15th. According to TyC Sports, United chiefs have identified Martinez as a prime option. While he has no offers on the table, the Red Devils are said to be interested. It is claimed that United chiefs first contacted Martinez six months ago and have been discussing a move for him for 'weeks'. Any move will only take place if Onana departs, with United ready to go 'all out' for Martinez. While the speculation around his future grows louder, Martinez is currently with Argentina ahead of their World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Colombia. ‌ Martinez is yet to comment publicly on his future, but he did break down in tears as he waved to Villa fans following their final home game of the season. Many pundits took that as a sign he is on his way out. The keeper has insisted he is pleased to have helped Villa secure a place in the Europa League next season. But he conceded that the campaign had largely been a disappointing one. "3rd consecutive European football. Not what we wanted but that shows how far we have come as a club. The fans were amazing as always, thank you! It's been a long and hard season but working with people you love is always easier," Martinez posted on Instagram. ‌ Villa boss Unai Emery meanwhile has hinted that Martinez will be on his way this summer. The Spaniard refused to confirm that the Argentine would be staying in the Midlands. He said: "We will see. Of course, it is the last match here [this season], and I don't know. We will see about the team, the players, but of course, they are responding on the field. Of course, then we will see about everything, how we are going to try to get better for the next season."

New Rangers manager Russell Martin's 'dark arts' admission

Initially praised for his attractive football, Martin's side won only one of their first 16 Premier League matches, resulting in his December dismissal. Martin, speaking after his sacking, reflected: "I think if I look back now at the start of the season, I would have made way more onus on fouling quickly, being more horrible out of possession. "Because we're pressing a lot but more detail with that about making contact earlier." His last match in charge saw Southampton suffer a heavy defeat against Tottenham, going 1-0 down in the first minute and five behind by half-time. "So I think a bit more athleticism is in the team, but if you're not going to have that then we need to make a real focus on being really difficult to play against, as well as all the stuff with the ball. "Because then, if you could bring the beauty with a ball, but also bring the darkness with that stuff, you need both." Martin's appointment at Ibrox is seen as a divisive one, with concerns about his inflexibility in style. However, his comments may alleviate some doubts, as he seems to be recognising the need for a more balanced approach. His challenge now is to implement this philosophy at Rangers, where expectations are high and patience is often in short supply.
