Shawne Merriman explains why he couldn't play in today's NFL
Shawne Merriman shares that the change in player safety wouldn't allow him to play with the passion and mentality he once had.
After Rob Gronkowski tried and failed to make the "Kick of Destiny" each of the last two years, FanDuel is turning to other retired NFL stars, with brothers Peyton and Eli Manning facing off against one another for a shot to give bettors a piece of the $10 million bonus bet pool.
The brothers are no strangers to competing against one another. Just last week, they served as the head coaches for the AFC and NFC Pro Bowl teams, as they've done each of the last three years. Eli has emerged victorious each time. However, with the pair now going head-to-head in a kick-off, perhaps the elder Peyton will finally have the upper hand.
Super Bowl 59 picks: Will Eagles stop Chiefs' three-peat bid?
What is the FanDuel Kick of Destiny?
The FanDuel Kick of Destiny is an annual event, now in its third year, that takes place prior to the Super Bowl. The event sees someone (we've only seen retired NFL players try it thus far), in this case Peyton and Eli Manning, attempting to make field goals in order to give bettors on FanDuel a share of $10 million in bonus bets. We've yet to see a kicker actually make the Kick of Destiny ... yet.
When is the FanDuel Kick of Destiny?
The competition will be held during FOX's pre-game show for Super Bowl 59.
FanDuel Kick of Destiny: Eli vs. Peyton
This year's event will work differently than previous years. For Gronkowski, it was just one kick. If he made it, everyone wins. If he missed it, everyone lost. This year, though, there is a much better chance for at least some people to walk away victorious.
Each kicker will start with a 25-yard field goal attempt. If the first kicker misses, the second kicker will be given a chance to win. If the first kick is good, however, the second kicker will be given a chance to tie and force a second round. There will be a maximum of three rounds. Bettors who picked Eli to win will win part of the $10 million in bonus bets if he wins, while bettors who picked Peyton will only win their share if Peyton wins.

Buccaneers' Coach Todd Bowles is 'More Ron Rivera than Mike Tomlin'
Buccaneers' Coach Todd Bowles is 'More Ron Rivera than Mike Tomlin' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are on an incredible run of five straight postseason appearances that include a record-tying four consecutive NFC South division wins. Advertisement A lot of the credit for that can be attributed head coach Todd Bowles. But is Bowles the coach who can get them over the top for the franchise's third Super Bowl title? NFL Trade Rumors' Logan Ulrich doesn't think so. "The Bucs are talented, deep and experienced on both sides of the ball, and made steps to address weaknesses at pass rusher and cornerback this offseason by bringing in OLB Haason Reddick and double-dipping on cornerbacks in the draft," Ulrich wrote. "All told, the Buccaneers are getting some hype as a potential breakout team in 2025 that can jump into the fray with the top teams in the conference. Advertisement "I'm not sure I can get on that bandwagon. Bowles has proven himself to be a competent coach, but I think he has more in common with former Panthers and Commanders HC Ron Rivera than he does with someone like Steelers HC Mike Tomlin. Rivera is a first-class person, but as a coach, his record of 102-103-2 does a pretty good job of encapsulating how he stacks up against his peers, even if he did make a Super Bowl appearance with Carolina." Bowles has his shortcomings, but it's mostly as the defensive coordinator. His clock management and use of timeouts has been called into question too. And his critics credit the poor division with his success. But with a revamped defense and an improved offense, 2025 could be the season for Bowles and the Bucs. Khalil Mack explains his decision to re-sign with the Chargers
Khalil Mack explains his decision to re-sign with the Chargers The Chargers brought back a key piece of the team this offseason, as they re-signed edge rushers Khalil Mack to a one-year deal. Mack contemplated retirement following the 2024 season, but decided not to hang up the cleats and stay with the team that traded for him in 2022. The 34-year-old Mack has been vocal about wanting to win and hoisting the Lombardi Trophy, which was the primary reason he stayed in Los Angeles, calling it a "no-brainer." "I had to be fair in the approach to things and not making it about just finances and all the different things," Mack said. "I tried to make it more so just about winning ball games." While winning the Super Bowl was a key factor for re-signing with the Bolts, Mack also values the relationships he has built with players and coaches, even highlighting Executive Director of Player Performance Ben Herbert. Mack is coming off another productive season. He finished first among the team in quarterback pressures (54) and second in sacks (6). Mack also had the second-highest Pro Football Focus run defense grade among all edge rushers in the NFL (88.0). As a result, he earned a third consecutive Pro Bowl nod. In 11 seasons in the league, Mack has played in five playoff games but has yet to notch a single postseason victory. He sees the potential in the current roster and coaching staff and believes they have what it takes to win it all. "Just not wanting to give up on that goal and that ambition that I have ever since I stepped into the league," Mack said. "I knew I wanted to play in important games and win a Super Bowl."

Buccaneers Labeled Simply 'Playoff Hopefuls' in Latest NFL Offseason Rankings
Buccaneers Labeled Simply 'Playoff Hopefuls' in Latest NFL Offseason Rankings originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Most NFL teams have finished their mandatory minicamps, while others will complete that in the upcoming week. Advertisement Draft picks have settled in with their respective teams, well, at least the ones who have signed (sorry, Cincinnati), and relocated free agents are done introducing themselves. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have certainly had their share of changes while also remaining largely the same on offense. The team returns all 11 starters on new offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard's side of the ball and they've made some modest changes on defense. But with all the changes, the Bucs are still being disrespected as a whole, and come in at No. 15 in NFL Trade Rumors' offseason NFL power rankings, under the category of "Playoff Hopefuls." Advertisement "The Bucs are talented, deep and experienced on both sides of the ball, and made steps to address weaknesses at pass rusher and cornerback this offseason by bringing in OLB Haason Reddick and double-dipping on cornerbacks in the draft," NFLTR's Logan Ulrich wrote. "All told, the Buccaneers are getting some hype as a potential breakout team in 2025 that can jump into the fray with the top teams in the conference. "I'm not sure I can get on that bandwagon. Bowles has proven himself to be a competent coach, but I think he has more in common with former Panthers and Commanders HC Ron Rivera than he does someone like Steelers HC Mike Tomlin. Rivera is a first-class person, but as a coach, his record of 102-103-2 does a pretty good job of encapsulating how he stacks up against his peers, even if he did make a Super Bowl appearance with Carolina." Ulrich sort of gives Bowles a backhanded compliment here, and he's not necessarily wrong. Something he fails to mention is that Bowles' failures aren't necessarily as a head coach, but as a defensive coordinator. Especially last season, as the team dealt with injuries. Advertisement But with a revamped defensive roster and a possibly even stronger offensive unit, Bowles has no more excuses. He has to get it done in 2025 or he could face a very hot seat - and rightfully so.
