USA Today3 days ago

The countdown to USC's 2025 football season is officially on! The Trojans kick off their new campaign 66 days from today. You need something to help you while away the days and hours in the spring and summer. This is one way to do so. In this new series, countdown to kickoff, we will be counting down the days by highlighting a notable Trojan who wore each number. Today, we take a look at former USC offensive lineman Marcus Martin.
Position: Offensive line
Years played at USC: 2011-2013
Career highlights: Martin earned USC's starting left guard job as a true freshman in 2011. After two seasons starting at the position, he moved to center following the departure of Khaled Holmes in 2013. As the Trojans' starting center his junior year, Martin was named a team captain and earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors.
After USC: Following his junior season, Martin declared for the 2014 NFL draft, where the San Francisco 49ers selected him in the third round. He would go on to spend seven years in the league, including stints with six different teams. Martin's last stint on an NFL active roster came with the New England Patriots in 2020.

Micah Parsons Turning Heads With Major Act Of Leadership

Micah Parsons Turning Heads With Major Act Of Leadership originally appeared on Athlon Sports. FRISCO — The wait for the Dallas Cowboys to sign Micah Parsons to a much anticipated contract extension gets longer with each passing day. With the calendar ready to flip into July and training camp only weeks away, the sides are still yet to agree on terms for a new deal. Advertisement This has become the typical practice for the Cowboys evidenced in their dealings with Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb on this same item a year ago. Despite this drawn out process, things seem amicable from both sides and Parsons has maintained a presence around the team. Parsons did not participate but made an appearance at mandatory minicamp a few weeks back. Now, he's keeping himself and his teammates active with some work outside the confines of The Star. The Cowboys' defensive star organized workouts on the beach with his peers on the defensive front. Those participating with Parsons included Osa Odighizuwa and Solomon Thomas among others. Very clearly, "The Lion's" leadership has resonated around the locker room. Parsons' off-the-field matters have not impacted his presence around the team. Instead, he continues to embrace the challenge of stepping into next season as the unquestioned leader of the defense. Advertisement Parsons has done nothing but produce in his first four seasons and his expected extension with the Cowboys should reflect that. But Year 5 and the remainder of his coming seasons with the franchise will call upon to embrace the transition from being a hungry up-and-comer to a savvy veteran leader. Some may find that difficult for the boisterous Parsons. Activities like this, however, provide tangible proof of his desire to become that figure for the Cowboys. The integration of this into his game will make him an invaluable piece for Dallas through the coming years. But of course, this all stands on the assumption the Cowboys secure the deal from their side and keep him in town long term. There's no reason to believe it won't happen though none can rest easy on this matter until the ink dries to paper. Harden averaged 22.8 points, 5.8 rebounds and 8.7 assists last season, his 16th in the league. He was an All-Star for the 11th time and returned to the All-NBA team for the first time since the 2019-20 season. ___ AP NBA: recommended in this topic

WNBA names All-Star Game captains: Caitlin Clark, Napheesa Collier to pick teams

Caitlin Clark and Napheesa Collier will be tasked with drafting their All-Star teams playground-style from a pool of eight starters and 12 reserves. Caitlin Clark and Napheesa Collier are set to go head to head when the Indiana Fever takes on the Minnesota Lynx in the 2025 WNBA Commissioner's Cup final on Tuesday. The 2025 WNBA All-Star Game will mark Round 2. On Sunday, June 29, the WNBA announced that Clark and Collier will serve as captains of this year's All-Star Game after picking up their second and fifth career All-Star nods, respectively. Clark, the reigning Rookie of the Year, and Collier, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, earned the honor by receiving the most fan votes. With the title of captain comes responsibilities. Clark and Collier will be tasked with drafting their All-Star teams playground-style from a pool of eight starters and 12 reserves. The remaining eight starters — selected by fan votes (50%), current WNBA players (25%) and media members (25%) — will be announced on Monday, June 30, while the 12 All-Star reserves will be selected by the league's head coaches on July 6. The WNBA All-Star Game draft will be broadcast on "WNBA Countdown Presented by Google' on July 8. The 2025 WNBA All-Star Game will be hosted at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, home of the Fever, and could feature more Indiana superstars. In the first returns of fan voting earlier this month, Fever center Aliyah Boston was ranked third, trailing only Clark and Collier. Will Clark and Boston team up again? We will have to wait and see. Clark's availability for the 2025 WNBA All-Star Game will be something to monitor. Clark has missed a career-high seven games this season due to injury, including the Fever's last two games due to a left groin injury. Her status for the Fever's Commissioner's Cup championship game vs. the Lynx remains unclear. Clark is averaging 18.2 points and 8.9 assists per game, which marks a career-high. Collier has led the Lynx to a league-best 13-2 record while averaging a league-high 24.5 points per game and 8.4 rebounds per game, the fourth-highest in the league. Clark and Collier faced off against each other in the 2024 WNBA All-Star Game, where Clark and Team WNBA handed the U.S. women's national team a loss before they went to the 2024 Paris Olympics and won another gold medal. Collier was held scoreless in three minutes of work off the bench for Team USA, while Clark had four points (2-of-9 FG, 0-of-7 3PT) and 10 assists in 26 minutes of work.
