Chesney Hawkes: ‘I was molested when I was 13. I carried that with me my whole life'

Independent11-04-2025

Pop singer and one-time teenage heartthrob Chesney Hawkes has revealed he was sexually abused as a child, in a powerful new interview with The Independent.
Currently appearing on ITV's Celebrity Big Brother, the 53-year-old singer discussed the trauma on Good Vibrations, this publication's music podcast.
The revelation comes as he releases a new album, Living Arrows, which features a moving track titled '13' written in collaboration with Nick Kershaw, the songwriter behind his breakout hit 'The One and Only'.
'When I was young – I was 13 years old – I was molested,' Hawkes said. 'It lasted longer than it should have done, put it that way, and I kind of carried that with me my whole life and didn't really realise how much it affected me until a little bit later on.'
The singer, who did not name his abuser but clarified it was someone outside his family, said it was a moment of vulnerability with his wife of 27 years, Kristina, that led to the song's creation.
'It was very much in my mind at this one particular moment where I was going up to do a session with Nick, because I just had this kind of crying, breakthrough moment with my wife about it,' he said.
'I thought, that's it. I've dealt with that now and we can move on. So I went up to Nick's house and we had a glass of wine and we started talking and he was like, 'Are you alright?' And I just spilled it out to him. He's known me since I was a kid.'
Kershaw encouraged him to write about the experience. 'It was so easy,' Hawkes said. 'It was like I had to write it… it was like vomiting.'
The musician said he 'had to be brave' and that he felt as though it was 'something that people need to hear', explaining that writing the song helped him continue to be vulnerable through the rest of the album.

'I was definitely in a state of wanting to get s*** out,' he said. 'So there are a couple of other songs on the album that tackle some deeper, more difficult topics as well.'
Hawkes shot to fame as a teenager in 1991 upon the release of 'The One and Only', which topped the UK charts for five weeks and also reached the top 10 in the United States. He also starred opposite The Who's Roger Daltrey in the film Buddy's Song, which featured 'The One and Only' as its main theme.
The pop-rock anthem turned him into an international sensation, a 'heartthrob' who was the subject of intense media scrutiny and attention from fans, and who was later dismissed as a 'one-hit wonder' and brutally dropped by his record label.
Elsewhere in the emotional and candid interview, Hawkes spoke about the impact that fame had on him, as he splashed out on luxury cars and dabbled briefly with substance abuse.
'Being young was definitely [behind some] difficult mental health issues as a kid,' he said. 'But also there [were] other things like where you're part of the machine – I was part of the machine – so there were people in charge of my career.'
When he first signed his record deal, Hawkes's heroes were artists such as The Beatles, Stevie Wonder and David Bowie, having been raised in a rock'n'roll household by his father Len 'Chip' Hawkes – the singer and bassist for the beat group The Tremoloes – and mother Carol Dilworth, a former actor and gameshow host.
'I always thought that if I was gonna make it, that was gonna be the route that I would take. That would be my thing, you know?' Hawkes said.
'So obviously the heartthrob route was kind of, not manufactured, but it was because I was that pretty boy – I get it. I understand why they went that route – but it wasn't particularly my choice. But I didn't speak up, you know, and say, 'No, this is not me.''
He also addressed how he was 'eviscerated' by the press after the fame he had achieved with 'The One and Only' began to dwindle.
'I kind of shoved it down inside myself and put the lid on and didn't pay attention to the fact that it actually was affecting me,' he said. 'But that's what you do when you are young. You don't know how to deal with those things.
'I did get into drugs and alcohol… but quickly realised that that's not the way to go – I concentrated on music, and I've always been quite a tenacious person.'
Despite being dropped by his label, Hawkes has continued to tour and release music; he recently supported fellow singer-songwriter James Blunt on his European tour, and will perform a series of headline shows later this year.
He is currently starring in this year's series of Celebrity Big Brother on ITV, alongside fellow guests including controversial actor Mickey Rourke, EastEnders actor Patsy Palmer, former child star and pop singer JoJo Siwa, and former Conservative MP Sir Michael Fabricant.
His new album, Living Arrows, is out now. The full episode of Good Vibrations is available on all major streaming platforms.

Fern Britton reveals the brutal way her ex husband Phil Vickery cut contact with her after their 20-year marriage ended

Fern Britton has revealed the brutal way that her ex husband Phil Vickery cut contact with her after their 20-year marriage ended. The television presenter, 67, became divorced from the TV chef, 64, in 2020 after two decades together. The split followed the deaths of Fern's parents, which reportedly caused the pair to realise that they had to 'follow their own paths'. Now in a new interview Fern has said that Phil stopped talking to her after her mum died in 2018. The pair were previously reported to have maintained a 'basic' level of communication after they split. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the Daily Mail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. But Fern has now revealed she didn't hear another word from her him after her mum passed away. In an interview with Yours magazine, Fern admitted: 'He hasn't spoken to me for six years now. As soon as my mum died, he stopped talking to me.' A representative for Phil has been contacted by MailOnline for comment. The Celebrity Big Brother 2024 contestant insists she tries 'very hard' to not 'bad-mouth' Phil for the sake of their 23-year-old daughter Winnie. Fern shares twin sons Harry and Jack, 31, and daughter Grace, 27, from her first marriage, to Clive Jones, and daughter Winnie with ex Phil. She said: 'Winnie adores him. I'm not going to bad-mouth him in front of her; at least, I try very hard not to. 'I was the child of divorced parents and my mum never bad-mouthed my father.' Earlier this week Fern candidly reflected on a experiencing a 'catalogue of difficulty' in the past few years - amid her jaw-dropping five stone weight loss. The star has faced emotional turmoil throughout her life, from her divorce from Phil and a terrifying stalker ordeal. Sharing her favourite home comforts - being with her cats Dr Iain Mackerel and Barbar in Cornwall - Fern emotionally touched on her past difficulties. She told The Sunday Times: 'When I'm not feeling well, one of my cats will always sit on my bed with me. They take it in turns, like a shift pattern. 'This has been particularly comforting in recent years because I've had a catalogue of difficult things to face, from getting my home together here in Cornwall to discovering that I had a stalker.' She recently admitted that while she does get 'lonely', she is still not looking for love five years on from her split. She told Woman & Home: 'I'm not looking for love - I'm still a bit too wary of losing my liberty. 'There's nobody to run something past but, on the other hand, I think back to running things past people and it never really worked out, so why don't I just make my own decision? Then I'm the only person who can go, 'I f***ed up there.' Last year, Fern's stalker was handed a ten-year restraining order and 150 hours of unpaid work after he admitted harassing the TV presenter. James Haviland, 63, of Great Oaks Chase, Chineham, Hampshire, pleaded guilty to stalking the former This Morning presenter without causing fear, alarm or distress in a two year crusade. The court heard Haviland began his 'prolonged campaign' in 2021 when started sending the mother-of-four, 66, cards and flowers. On three occasions the married father made the four-hour drive from his Hampshire home to the village of Padstow more than 200 miles away where the former This Morning presenter has gone on holiday as a child. As part of his oppressive behaviour, he even rented the holiday cottage which the star owns. In 2020, the Celebrity Big Brother star moved 270 miles from her home in Buckinghamshire to the Southwest coast of England after she split with Phil. The presenter said it had helped her heal after they split following 20 years of marriage, and her parents passing away. In recent months, Fern has continued to showcase her incredible five stone weight loss. In a recent Instagram post, the presenter looked effortlessly chic in a plaid blazer and trousers while resting her hand on her slender waist. Fern recently revealed the turning point behind her dramatic weight loss in an interview with Woman&Home magazine. The presenter reflected on the powerful moment she decided to take back control of her health. She told the publication: 'People often wonder when you lose lots of weight whether you've done it naturally. 'And I can look at you and say, 'Yes, I have'.' 'I had my shoulder replacement 18 months ago, and two-and-a-half years ago, when I saw the surgeon, he said, 'I'm going to totally replace your shoulder, I'll see you in a year.' 'I thought, 'I need to get my life back on track. I need to stop smoking, stop drinking, get eating under control and stop lying in bed feeling sorry for myself'. 'So I started the Couch to 5k, took about 80 per cent of the sugar out of my life and started to think about what I was eating, which I had never done before.' Fern became a household name alongside Phillip Schofield from 1999 to 2009, when she was replaced by Holly. She reportedly blames Phil for her This Morning exit and isn't afraid to speak out in the CBB house. It was claimed at the time of Fern's This Morning exit she felt 'undervalued by ITV' and that she was 'living in Phil's shadow'. It was also reported she was being paid £250,000 a year less than Phil and that he was earning three times her salary when they were fronting Mr and Mrs together from 2008 to 2010. Phil is said to have banked £45,000 an hour while Fern earned just £15,000. However, Fern denied she left ITV because of her salary and upon her departure she mentioned the whole This Morning team rather than just Phillip. Four years after her departure, Phillip admitted he and Fern no longer spoke.

ITV axes beloved breakfast show segment in new cost-cutting measures

ITV has been forced to make more major cuts in an attempt to manage costs and it is bad news for some huge breakfast stars. ITV's Andi Peters and Jeff Brazier will reportedly no longer be sent on lavish holidays abroad as the broadcaster have been forced to cut all their expenses-paid trips. Over the past year, the duo have been whisked off to a number of sun-soaked locations to front ITV competitions, appearing on programmes such as Good Morning Britain, Loose Women, This Morning and Lorraine. Andi's enviable locations have included the Maldives, Australia, Cape Town, and Florida while Jeff has been sent to Thailand, Sri Lanka and Malta. However, channel executives believe it's in "bad taste" to continue flying presenters to exotic destinations after announcing hundreds of devastating redundancies across ITV as part of their cost-saving measures. ‌ An insider told MailOnline: "ITV have scaled back on sending top talent overseas to present their competition segments. The competitions themselves, which give viewers the chance to win six figure sums and idyllic holidays, bring in a great deal of revenue, but constantly flying the likes of Andi and Jeff to the Maldives and South Africa was starting to frustrate staff and viewers alike." ‌ The source continued: "It was decided that they would dial down for a few weeks after the budget cuts were announced and no one has flown overseas to present the competitions since. "As well as there being a backlash online from disgruntled viewers, it was felt continuing to send talent abroad to luxurious holiday destinations as others are losing their jobs would be in bad taste." ITV's budget cuts were first announced last month, with a number of popular programmes taking a huge hit as the broadcaster battles a mounting financial crisis, the Express reports. ‌ The Lorraine Show will lose its long-standing hour-long slot from January 2026 , and will now air for just 30 minutes from 9:30am until 10am. The show, presented by Lorraine Kelly, has seen its airtime been slashed in half and the talk show has also been restricted to being broadcast just 30 weeks of the year. ‌ Fears have been circulating that the Scots presenter may quit her show, which has been running since 2010, as a result of the cuts. Lorraine received the news after returning to work following a surgery to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes last year. The surgery was described as "preventative" and performed via keyhole surgery. ‌ As part of the shake-up, Good Morning Britain will have its current 6am to 9am slot extended until 9:30am. During the 22 weeks of the year that Lorraine will now be off-air, Good Morning Britain's airtime has been extended until 10am, adding an extra hour to its original schedule. Meanwhile, This Morning will still air from 10:30am to 12:30pm but another show which is being scaled back is Loose Women. The popular ITV daytime programme will now also air on a seasonal basis for just 30 weeks a year. According to MailOnline, Loose Women is set to scrap their live audience due to the ongoing budget cuts.

Love Island announce two new boys as heartbroken star sent home in huge twist

Love Island have announced two new singletons for this series. The new season kicked off on Monday, but this year's singles haven't had the chance to get comfortable in their couples, as ITV producers quickly started sending in bombshells left, right, and centre. The girls were the first to come under fire as American pool party waitress Antonia Laites entered the villa and immediately stole Shakira's man. This left her vulnerable to being dumped from the island, so she soon had to start chatting up the other girls' partners in a last-ditch attempt to save herself before the next firepit ceremony. However, now it is the men on the show who have had the pressure put on them as two new bombshells have entered the villa and are ready to crack on with their girls, following the devastating dumping of Sophie Lee. Here is what we know about the new lads... Shea, 25, from Bristol, said he is looking for someone bubbly, who's got "that spark". Unlike some of the other boys in the villa, this one is not looking to mess around. Shea wants to find a good girl with a "nice personality" to get serious with. It's also very important to him that she will be understanding of the important role his young son plays in his life. The scaffolder, who admits he spends most mornings in the gym, added: "I am ready again to look for something more serious. I'm 25 now, so I want to be settling down and have someone always by my side." Although Shea is looking for a wifey, his single days are not far behind him. When asked what he would be the boss of, he didn't hesitate to say "pulling girls". The cheeky gym buff added: "I'm confident to go up and introduce myself and say, 'You look beautiful', to get a conversation flowing." Essex-based content creator Remell, 24, wants to meet someone who is "bubbly, confident, ambitious and fun". He admitted he easily gets bored of being with the same person, so girls on the island better look out, because his head might be quickly turned. Remell joked that a film based on his love life up until now would be called "Once a Player, Not Always a Player", adding: "I'm the CEO of flirting. Sometimes it's just unintentional." The self improvement guru also opened up about his high standards, saying he needs a woman who can "stimulate him mentally" and his biggest ick is someone with no ambition or goals. He shared: "If I can't talk to a woman and pick her brain, have some discussion, that's a huge turn off for me as where are we going to be going?" The two new boys were introduced to the villa moments after the other Islanders were left devastated by Sophie's exit. The motivational speaker from Manchester was axed from the show after Shakira decided to steal her man in order to remain in the villa, so the bombshells have got some cheering up to do. .
