
Oman participates in Moscow International Travel, Tourism Exhibition
Moscow: The Sultanate of Oman is taking part in the Moscow International Travel and Tourism Exhibition, which showcases important developments in the tourism sector.
Ten Omani tourism companies are participating in the expo and workshops with the aim of exchanging knowledge and expertise and exploring trends in the global tourism industry.
The event, held annually in Moscow, constitutes one of the largest tourism exhibitions in Russia and Eastern Europe. It brings together outstanding tourism industry experts from different parts of the world.
Haitham Mohammed Al Ghassani, Director-General of Tourism Promotion at the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, explained that the ministry attaches great importance to participating in international tourism exhibitions, considering them a vital platform for enhancing the Sultanate of Oman's presence on the international stage.
He pointed out that the Sultanate of Oman's pavilion at the exhibition reflects the Omani architectural style in its design, while using the latest technologies to display content that promotes the Sultanate's tourism assets.
He said that the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism aims, through its participation in international tourism exhibitions, to achieve a number of objectives, most notably enhancing the Sultanate of Oman's presence in the largest international exhibitions in the travel and tourism sector, introducing developments related to the tourism sector in the Sultanate of Oman, meeting with the largest international tourism companies and institutions, and discussing joint cooperation to increase the number of tourists coming to the Sultanate of Oman through these companies, and creating an important promotional and economic platform for Omani tourism companies and institutions, including small and medium enterprises.
The Director General of Tourism Promotion indicated that the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism will meet with representatives of a number of international airlines, global tourism companies, and media outlets to promote a number of tourism styles.

Eco, heritage tourism drive South Sharqiyah's rise as travel hotspot
Sur – South Sharqiyah continues to be one of Oman's most visited regions, drawing thousands of visitors with its diverse natural landscapes and deep cultural heritage. The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT) reported 38,793 tourist arrivals in the governorate in 2024, with the upward trend persisting into 2025. In the first quarter of this year, the region received 5,655 tourists. Known for its coastlines, wadis, mountain ranges and historical sites, South Sharqiyah has become massively popular among both domestic and international travellers. Its key attractions include the Ras al Jinz Turtle Reserve, Fatah al Khair Centre and Al Saleel Natural Park in the wilayat of Al Kamil Wal Wafi. The governorate is also home to a number of forts and castles that reflect Oman's rich architectural and maritime legacy. These sites, alongside traditional shipbuilding workshops and local heritage experiences, form the backbone of its tourism offering. Abdullah bin Rashid al Hajri, Director of the Heritage and Tourism Department in South Sharqiyah, attributed the governorate's rising profile to its year-round appeal and geographical diversity. 'Several wilayats enjoy mild summer weather, which enhances the visitor experience,' he said. 'The combination of sea, mountains and desert offers endless possibilities for adventure seekers.' Hajri added that the region supports a range of activities, including camping, fishing, kitesurfing, and turtle watching – especially between June and August, when green turtles arrive to nest along the shores. He also urged travellers to explore key heritage sites such as Bilad Sur Fort, Al Snaisilah Fort, Ras al Hadd Fort, Jaalan Bani Bu Hassan Fort and Al Ayjah Fort, as well as natural landmarks such as Wadi Shab, Wadi Tiwi, Masirah Island, Mibam Village, and the Unesco-listed Falaj al Jeela and Kubaykib Tombs. South Sharqiyah's growing reputation is part of Oman's broader strategy to diversify its economy by boosting tourism. The focus is on leveraging local resources to attract sustainable visitor flows while generating employment and supporting the national GDP. New projects to support tourism In a move to improve tourism infrastructure and promote domestic travel, South Sharqiyah governorate has announced several new development projects across the region. The Governor's Office has floated tenders for the construction of a waterfront promenade in the Al Barr area of Sur and a public park in Jaalan Bani Bu Ali. These initiatives aim to create integrated recreational spaces for families and tourists, while supporting environmental and tourism-related activities. Additionally, consultancy services are being sought for the design and technical supervision of the Ras al Hadd waterfront development project. Ras al Hadd is internationally recognised as an eco-tourism destination and nesting site for sea turtles. Interested companies have been asked to submit proposals by June 11, in accordance with the terms specified in the tender documents. The initiatives form part of the governorate's coordinated strategy, in collaboration with various government bodies, to enhance public services, promote sustainable tourism, and stimulate local economic growth through job creation.

Tourism master plan for Jabal Abyad begins
Muscat – A major tourism development initiative is in the pipeline for Jabal Abyad, or White Mountain, in Al Hamra, as the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism seeks to unlock the area's untapped potential for sustainable, cultural and nature-based tourism. Spanish consulting firm THR Strategic Tourism Advisors announced that it has begun working on a comprehensive tourism master plan for the region. The firm has been advising tourism-focused organisations worldwide for over four decades. 'We are excited to share that we've officially launched a project to develop a tourism master plan for Jabal Abyad,' the firm posted on LinkedIn. Located in the Dakhliyah governorate, Jabal Abyad lies less than a two-hour drive from Muscat and is known for its dramatic landscapes, rich archaeological heritage, and welcoming communities. As part of the initial fieldwork, the THR team – comprising Javier Gonzalez-Garcia and Maria Vilaplana – visited the site with officials from the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism and local experts. The visit was aimed at assessing the area's assets and identifying development opportunities in line with sustainable tourism goals. 'Jabal Abyad holds remarkable potential for nature-based and cultural tourism, with its stunning wadis, rich archaeological sites, awe-inspiring caves, and above all, the warm hospitality of its people,' the consultants stated. They emphasised that the visit was a critical first step in shaping a plan that respects both the environment and the local culture. The initiative follows Royal Directive issued by His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik last year to accelerate the development of Jabal Abyad and Wakan Village. The directive called for the provision of essential infrastructure and supportive conditions to transform these areas into key tourism destinations, particularly for outdoor, camping and adventure travel. The move aligns with Oman's strategy to increase the tourism sector's contribution to GDP, generate local economic value, and create employment opportunities for citizens. The tourism masterplan is expected to lay the groundwork for sustainable growth in the area, ensuring long-term benefits.

Women in Oman import handbags worth RO 9.5m in 2024
Muscat: Women in Oman imported handbags worth RO 9.5 million in 2024, marking a 37 per cent rise compared to the same period in 2023. The National Center for Statistics and Information said Oman has witnessed a notable diversification in the types of imported handbags ranging from materials to designs to international brands thus catering to the different ages and tastes. Part of this increase is attributed to the growing online stores that have become key players in selling women's goods. These platforms have helped provide diverse options, competitive prices and convenient shipping across Oman. Maryam al Muqbali, owner of one of the online stores, said that the demand for online handbag purchases has witnessed remarkable growth in recent years, especially during festivals. "We've noticed that women are increasingly relying on online shopping because it offers attractive deals and prices, as well as multiple payment options and fast delivery services, all of which have significantly boosted sales. We always strive to import high-quality handbags that keep up with the latest fashion trends to meet the needs of women of all ages." Khadija al Balushi, one of the consumers, said, "I love buying handbags, whether from stores or online. In Oman, there's a wide variety of handbag stores, both in large shopping centres and small local markets, and each store offers different collections to suit all tastes. I often look for handbags that suit my daily needs in terms of quality and durability. Sometimes, I resort to online stores if I want new designs or special offers. But at the same time, I love shopping in person because I can touch and see the product up close before buying, which is important to me to ensure the product is genuine, as some online accounts might sell counterfeit items." She said sometimes she hesitate before buying, "because I'm not sure about the product's quality, so I focus on reading reviews and others' experiences before making a purchase. Nevertheless, online shopping has made many things easier for us, especially when time is tight." She said she has both original and imitation handbags, noting that she prefers the originals. She explained that it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between original and fakes. She believes that the genuine product is worth the price. This increase comes within the context of the continuous growth of the Omani consumer market, especially during holidays, vacations and social occasions, which are periods that typically see increased demand for such products.
