Punjab parties unite against land pooling scheme, demand FTA exclusion
During the meeting held on Friday, leaders from across the political spectrum sought to strengthen the cooperative sector, annul all existing water accords and review Sections 78, 79, and 80 of the Punjab Reorganisation Act. A consensus was reached to urge the Punjab assembly to pass a resolution and sent to the Centre, advocating for parliamentary amendments to these sections.
The SKM had convened the all-party meeting, challenging political factions to clarify their positions on contentious issues facing Punjab.
Representatives from Congress, BJP, Shiromani Akali Dal, BSP, SAD (five-member recruitment committee), CPI, CPI (M), CPI(ML) Liberation, CPI(ML) New Democracy, and RMPI participated, with only AAP absent.
The land pooling scheme has faced widespread condemnation. In a voice vote, party leaders slammed the state govt, labelling the scheme a "ploy to seize fertile lands from farmers and hand them over to corporates".

They vowed to resist its implementation, citing over 90% opposition from landowning farmers. Some parties even implicated AAP's "Delhi-based top leadership," alleging collusion with corporations targeting valuable land.
Beyond land pooling, political leaders supported the SKM's agenda to annul water-sharing agreements, urging the state govt to pass a resolution to the Centre. They also backed the SKM's demand to scrap the Dam Safety Act in its current form, arguing it undermines the federal structure by transferring state rights over dams to the Centre.
Unanimous support was also voiced for bolstering the cooperative movement to combat the sale of spurious seeds, fertilisers, pesticides, and insecticides.
SKM leaders Balbir Singh Rajewal, Harinder Singh Lakhowal, Darshanpal, Buta Singh Burjgill, and Raminder Patiala presided over the proceedings. Prominent attendees included Avtar Singh Karimpuri (BSP), Randeep Singh Nabha (Congress), Kewal Singh Dhillon (former MLA), Subash Sharma (BJP), Sukhdeep Singh and Dinesh Kumar (SAD), Iqbal Singh Jhunda and Gurpartap Singh Wadala (SAD five-member committee), Sukhwinder Sekhon (CPI(M)), Bant Singh Brar (CPI), Sukhdarshan Natt and Gurmeet Singh Bakhtupura (CPI(ML) Liberation), Darshan Singh Khatkar (CPI(ML) New Democracy), and Pargat Singh Jamrai (RMPI), all presenting their party's views.
SKM leaders later clarified their objective is to understand political parties' stances. The SKM stated it would continue to champion these issues, with parties expected to offer external support.

Malegaon blast verdict: M.P. BJP leaders seek apology from Congress, Digvijaya Singh
Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in Madhya Pradesh on Thursday (July 31, 2025) demanded apologies from the Congress for 'crafting narratives like Hindu terrorism' after a court acquitted all seven accused, including former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur, in the 2008 Malegaon blast case. A special NIA court in Mumbai, in its judgment, said that the prosecution 'failed to prove the case' and that the accused 'deserved the benefit of doubt' while acquitting Ms. Thakur, Lt. Col. Prasad Purohit and five others. Six people had lost their lives in the blast on September 29, 2008, in Malegaon city of Maharashtra's Nashik district. Former M.P. Chief Minister Uma Bharti welcomed the verdict and said that the case was used to 'draft a theory of saffron terrorism' while accusing Congress leader and former CM Digvijaya Singh of being its 'originator'. 'The definition of saffron terrorism was coined during this case. Its originator was Digvijaya Singh ji and he was doing this work at the behest of [Congress leader] Rahul Gandhi. To defame Hindutva all over the world, the term saffron terrorism was coined in comparison to Islamic terrorism. And to prove the term, innocent people were made victims,' Ms. Bharti said, while claiming that Ms. Thakur and Lt. Col. Purohit faced severe torture in prison. While specifying that terrorism has no colour, Ms. Bharti claimed that the term 'saffron terrorism' was coined by those who were trying to appease the minorities. She asked what action will be taken against those who 'conspired against the Hindu community'. M.P. CM Mohan Yadav also took to X to hail the verdict and said that it is a 'blow to the Congress' narrow-minded mentality'. 'This verdict is a strong response to those who insult Sanatan Dharma, sadhus-saints, and the saffron flag. The Congress should publicly apologise to all Sanatani people,' he wrote. Meanwhile, Shyam Bhavarlal Sahu, an Indore-based businessman who was discharged from the case in December 2017, said that all the accused had been 'framed in a fabricated case'. 'I was framed under 25-30 charges in the case but we have received justice now. The Congress' conspiracy has been exposed. The party should apologise for its conspiracy, though I don't think it will,' Mr. Sahu said, speaking to news agency PTI. 'While I was in jail after my arrest, my elder brother Mohan Sahu used to come and support me during court appearances. During an appearance, he suffered a heart attack in front of my eyes and died about half-an-hour later. I could not do anything to save him,' said Mr. Sahu, who was arrested in October 2008.

Rahul Gandhi backs Trump's ‘dead' Indian economy remark, his colleagues disagree: Who said what
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi backed US President Donald Trump's "dead" Indian economy remark. At the same time, his party colleagues as well as the INDIA bloc allies felt otherwise. Rahul Gandhi's colleague and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said that if America's demands are completely unreasonable, then India's negotiators have every right to resist.(PTI) After announcing the 25 per cent tariff and an unspecified penalty on New Delhi, Trump had said that India and Russia "can take their dead economies down together". Rahul Gandhi was asked about the remark in the Parliament complex, to which he replied, "Yes, he is right. Everybody knows this except the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister. Everybody knows that the Indian economy is a dead economy. I am glad that President Trump has stated a fact... The entire world knows that the Indian economy is a dead economy." Rahul Gandhi's colleagues feel otherwise Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said that it is a "very serious matter" for India". He said, "25, plus an unspecified penalty for our buying oil and gas from Russia, it could take it up to 35-45... There's even talk of a 100% penalty, which will destroy our trade with America... The trade negotiations are still going on, and there is a possibility that this may come down. If it doesn't, it will damage our exports, because America is a very big market for us." Tharoor further added that if America's demands are completely unreasonable, then India's negotiators have every right to resist. "America has to understand our needs as well. Our tariffs on America are not that unreasonable. It's about 17 per cent average. American goods are not priced competitively enough to sell in the Indian market," he told news agency ANI. Rajeev Shukla Congress MP Rajeev Shukla slammed Trump and said that his 'dead' Indian economy remark "is wrong". "The Indian economy is not dead. Economic reforms were made when PV Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh were there. Atal Bihari Vajpayee took those reforms forward. Manmohan Singh strengthened it in the 10 years. The current government has also worked on it," he told ANI. Shukla further defended the country and said that India's economic condition is not at all weak. "If someone claims they can finish us economically, it's likely due to a misunderstanding," he added. The Congress leader said that Trump was "living in a delusion", adding that imposing tariffs is wrong. "Every nation has the right to trade with the nation it wants. Restricting them, speaking against the BRICS, speaking against trade and import from Russia, this is not right," Shukla added. Imraan Masood Congress MP Imraan Masood expressed solidarity with Prime Minister Narendra Modi while condemning the US President's remark on the Indian economy. "This government is not ready to speak even a single word on Trump... Have we become slaves of America? America is threatening us every day... What he (Donald Trump) said today is very objectionable. The whole country will stand firmly with PM Modi against this. But he should answer Trump," he told ANI. Priyanka Chaturvedi Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi hit out at Trump's "arrogance" and "ignorance" for his 'dead' Indian economy comment. "Not that one needs to say it there's enough legitimate data available to know that Indian economy is in the top 5 of the world and one of the fastest growing economies. Calling it a dead economy can only come from a position of arrogance or ignorance. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" she said in a post on X. RJD MP Manoj Jha said that Trump's remark was not just on the government but on the entire nation. "It has been a tradition in the Rajya Sabha to ask for clarifications, but any possibility of that was ruled out today... This was not just a comment on the government but on India," he added.

Associations collectively voice opposition against proposed mall construction in APSRTC land
Representatives of various people's organisations, political parties and voluntary bodies came together to collectively oppose the government's decision to hand over 4.5 acres of land belonging to the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) in the heart of Vijayawada city to UAE-based Lulu Group International for construction of a shopping mall. At a roundtable organised by Vijayawada Poura Vedika (Vijayawada Citizens Forum) on Thursday, a resolution was passed to stage a massive dharna at the Old Bus Stand, the proposed site for construction of the mall, on August 6. The members also constituted an RTC Asset Protection Committee with the national working president of All-India Lawyers' Union (AILU) S. Rajendra Prasad as its convenor and called for a broad, apolitical unity to protect RTC lands and ensure the survival of small and middle class traders in the surrounding areas. Former Minister Vadde Shobhanadreeswara Rao took strong exception to the government selling public assets and said it was against the law. Calling for a united fight, he said that people cannot remain silent spectators when valuable RTC lands worth crores of rupees were being handed over, in Vijayawada and in Visakhapatnam, to the MNC at throwaway prices. He said that it was against the 2012 Land Allotment Act of united Andhra Pradesh, which mandates market value and transparency in land allocation. Former Mayor Jandhyala Shankar said it was unfortunate that in its eagerness to usher in development, the TDP-led coalition government was losing sight of critical factors like environmental protection and public welfare. He said it would severely harm the interests of the urban residents. Mr. Rajendra Prasad highlighted the need for a sustained legal, as well as people's struggle, to protect the RTC lands, while the forum's State convener Ch. Baburao called for a united agitation to scuttle the government plans in this regard. He urged all sections — intellectuals, civic leaders, RTC unions, civil society bodies and others to unite for the cause. He said while the market rate of the land was ₹200 per sq. ft on Bandar Road, the valuable RTC land was being given for an alarmingly low rate of ₹1.50 per sq. ft. Andhra Pradesh Public Transport Department (APPTD) Employees Union State president P. Damodar the RTC unions were ready to make any sacrifice to protect the assets belonging to the Public Transport Department. Representatives of various organisations like Jana Chaitanya Vedika, A.P. Chamber of Commerce, farmers' associations, hotel owners' association, pensioners' association, tax-payers association and others attended the meeting and expressed solidarity for the cause of protecting APSRTC land.
