Telangana police gear up to prevent communal tensions ahead of Bakrid
'Police have outlined a detailed plan to ensure the festival is celebrated peacefully. Past instances of unrest, linked to cow vigilante groups and unauthorised animal transport, have prompted a State-wide crackdown this year,' says a statement issued by Director General of Police Jitender on Friday.
The State police have invoked the Telangana Prohibition of Cow Slaughter and Animal Preservation Act, the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, and the Animals and Birds Sacrifices Prohibition Act. A series of inter-departmental meetings were held with municipal authorities, transport officials and the veterinary department to streamline certification procedures and proper disposal of animal waste.
Police have also engaged with peace committees, cattle transporters, butchers and religious leaders to educate them on the legal boundaries and consequences of violations. Known offenders from previous years have been bound over as a preventive step.
To tackle the problem of illegal cattle transport, inter-State and inter-district checkposts are now operational round the clock, each staffed with veterinary doctors. Police pickets have been deployed in sensitive areas, mobile patrols intensified, and monitoring of cattle markets has been ramped up. Dedicated cattle holding centres equipped with veterinary support have also been established.
'We have made it clear that cow vigilante groups hold no legal authority to intercept vehicles or take enforcement action. Citizens with information about suspicious transport activities are advised to contact the nearest police station. Anyone found engaging in illegal activities or spreading rumours to incite unrest will face legal action, with both vehicles and cattle subject to seizure,' said the DGP.

Astaranga IIC suspended for gross misconduct
BHUBANESWAR: Director General of Police (DGP) YB Khurania on Friday suspended Rajesh Baliarsingh, inspector-in-charge (IIC) of Astaranga police station in Puri, for gross misconduct and dereliction of duty. During the suspension period, he will remain under the disciplinary control of Central Range IG. Sources said Baliarsingh was suspended over his alleged links with ganja smugglers active in Koraput district. Even after getting promoted to inspector rank and being transferred to Puri district, Baliarsingh reportedly continued to keep contact with the ganja smugglers, said sources. Earlier in the week, Koraput police had summoned Baliarsingh and asked him to appear before them at a police station in Bhubaneswar for questioning in this regard. He appeared before a team of Koraput police officers, but left without their knowledge and answering their questions. On being asked whether Baliarsingh was involved in any particular case registered under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in Koraput, district, SP Rohit Verma said a detailed probe has been launched in connection with the allegations against the police officer.

SFJ threatens CM Mann; Khalistani graffiti found on Punjab MLA's house
Bhagwant Mann (File photo) BATHINDA: Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), a US-based Khalistani outfit, has emailed several media persons threatening "political death" for Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann from Aug 31 - the day then Punjab CM Beant Singh was assassinated. Earlier, Sikhs for Justice chief and designated terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun had openly threatened to kill Mann and the Punjab DGP on Republic Day. In a related incident, pro-Khalistani graffiti was found painted on Mehal Kalan MLA Kulwant Pandori's house in Pandori village in Barnala Friday morning. The same threatening slogan was also found near the village bus stand. Officials later spray-painted the graffiti black to obscure it. "CCTV footage shows two men arriving on a motorbike around 3am on Aug 15. They painted the slogans quickly. A police complaint has already been filed," the MLA said. TNN

‘Legitimisation cell': Israeli army unit falsely branded journalists as Hamas operatives to justify strikes, report says
AP file photo Israel's military assigned a special unit to identify journalists it could portray as undercover Hamas operatives to target them and deflect international criticism over the killing of media persons, according to a report by the Israeli-Palestinian outlet +972 magazine. The 'legitimisation cell' was established in the aftermath of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack, to collect information aimed at bolstering Israel's image and reinforcing diplomatic and military backing from key allies, as per the report citing three intelligence sources. The intelligence sources said that the Israeli military regarded the media as an extension of the battlefield, which allowed it to declassify sensitive intelligence for public release. 'There was this phrase, 'that's good for legitimacy,'' one source recalled, as per +972 magazine. 'The goal was simply to find as much material as possible to serve hasbara efforts.' They added that even personnel outside the Legitimisation Cell were instructed to flag any material that could support Israel in the information war. Several 'research teams' had been formed within Israeli military intelligence over the past two years to focus on 'exposing Hamas' lies.' They said the aim was to 'discredit' journalists covering the war on broadcast networks, in allegedly a reliable and precise way,' but those who they alleged were affiliated with Hamas, official security sources were quoted as saying by the magazine. Four Al Jazeera journalists, along with two freelancers, were killed in an Israeli strike last week in Gaza City. Among them was prominent correspondent Anas al-Sharif, who the Israeli military alleged was a Hamas operative 'posed as a journalist.' In October 2024, the military alleged that six Al Jazeera journalists, including Al-Sharif, were operatives, a claim he strongly denied. The Israeli army killed six journalists in a strike on August 10, which it acknowledged was directed at Sharif. Two months earlier, in July, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) had voiced concern for al-Sharif's safety, warning that he was 'targeted by an Israeli military smear campaign, which he believes is a precursor to his assassination,' as cited by +972 magazine. 'If the global media is talking about Israel killing innocent journalists, then immediately there's a push to find one journalist who might not be so innocent, as if that somehow makes killing the other 20 acceptable,' an intelligence source was quoted as saying by the magazine. In at least one instance since the war began, the 'Legitimisation Cell' distorted intelligence to falsely present a journalist as a member of Hamas's military wing, two intelligence sources said.
