Sports Seriously
Sports fans, start your internet connections.
At a press conference in New York on May 13, ESPN executives detailed plans for the Disney-owned sports network's new streaming service, which will give subscribers access to all of ESPN's content on streaming for a monthly fee, without needing that pesky cable subscription.
The new standalone service and app, simply dubbed "ESPN," will cost $29.99 a month for its unlimited tier, although it can also be acquired bundled with Disney+ and Hulu for $35.99 monthly with ads on Disney+ and Hulu (discounted to $29.99 for the first 12 months). For no ads on those two streamers, the plan costs $44.99 per month (ads will be included on any tier of the ESPN. app).
That unlimited plan plan includes access to live content from all ESPN networks, ESPN content on ABC, and more, which all adds up to 47,000 live events each year. Select plans also include all content from ESPN+, the company's current streaming service that mostly includes bonus content separate from the cable channel.
The streaming app "will redefine our business. Our mission is very clear: Serve the sports fan anytime, anywhere," Jimmy Pitaro, chairman of ESPN, told reporters. The simple name, Pitaro said, is because "there's power in our name; there's trust in our name. Simple, straightforward, clear."
Some of the sports content that streaming subscribers will get access to includes, and is definitely not limited to: NFL; NBA; NHL; MLB; WNBA; UFC; UFL; SEC; ACC; Big 12; College Football Playoffs; Wimbledon and US Open tennis; The Masters, PGA Championship and the PGA tour. The network's signature commentary and news shows will also be included, including: "SportsCenter," "Get Up," "First Take," "NFL Live," "The Pat McAfee Show" and more.
The new, redesigned app will have "enhanced stats, betting, short-form video, personalized SportsCenter, all designed to meet fans where they are, on their terms," he added. It will be an "attractive fan-friendly plan for standalone ESPN" or bundled with Disney+ and Hulu. For those subscribers who already get their Hulu on their Disney+ app, ESPN will be available in the same interface. The company is in discussions with other streamers to try to create more bundling opportunities for subscribers.
In addition to the "unlimited" tier, ESPN is offering the "select plan," which is essentially the same as ESPN+ but doesn't replace it. That plan will cost $11.99 or $119.99 a year. When bundled with Hulu and Disney+ it costs $16.99 a month with ads or $26.99 without them.
Existing ESPN+ subscribers will automatically become subscribers to ESPN's new service, based on their current subscription level: Standalone ESPN+ subscribers will get the ESPN select plan, and Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+ bundle subscribers get the ESPN select bundle.
In addition to the NFL, NBA and other professional sports games fans can expect commentator Rich Eisen, who rose to fame on ESPN but lately has been at the NFL Network, is returning home with "The Rich Eisen Show" on the streaming service and ESPN+ this fall.
No launch date was announced at the presentation, but Pitaro promised that would be announced in the coming weeks. It is likely to be in advance of NFL and college football seasons beginning this fall, as will happen with Fox's new streamer, Fox One, announced May 12, which will have competing sports programming.
The new streamer is aimed at getting cable cutters to add ESPN to their existing portfolio of subscriptions. But sports fans who are hanging on to their cable subscriptions need not worry: ESPN will remain available on cable/OTT services.

First phase of Disney's Asteria community gets go-ahead from NC town
The first phase of Disney's North Carolina development cleared its first hurdle when the Pittsboro Town Board unanimously approved a preliminary plat Monday for the Asteria community. Asteria General Manager Matt Dean, with Arizona-based DMB Development, introduced the project team, but did not offer more details about the 1,550-acre Storyliving by Disney project that will be built northeast of the U.S. 15-501-U.S. 64 interchange. 'We're excited to bring forward this Asteria phase one preliminary plat application to the town and look forward to building a meaningful and long-term relationship with you for years to come,' Dean said. The commissioners did not ask any questions before voting 5-0 to approve the 217-acre preliminary plat. It includes 494 single-family homes, townhomes, duplexes and quadplexes along tree-lined streets. Roughly 25 acres on the neighborhood's eastern border, near the Haw River, are designated for a 'commons area.' The project also includes more than 29 acres of open space, mostly along the site's stream buffers, and 18 acres of public park land that will be built in another section of Chatham Park. DMB Development paid $23.3 million for the site in March — the first of nine planned building sites that could eventually add 4,000 homes between Chatham Park's Mosaic mixed-use district and the Haw River. Asteria comprises roughly 18% of the 8,500-acre Chatham Park development, which could nearly double Chatham County's population, bringing about 60,000 people, 22,000 homes and 22 million square feet of business, medical and commercial construction. Disney Imagineers are working with DMB Development to plan recreation facilities and project amenities, including parks, a clubhouse, wellness and recreation center, restaurant, swimming pools, trails and community garden, as well as special Disney-themed events, artist-led classes and storytelling dinners. Disney could design, own and operate less than 55 acres of 'core amenities' in Asteria, according to an April 2024 letter sent to the nonprofit Haw River Assembly. One of the biggest concerns for Pittsboro residents is how the community will coexist with the Haw River and the surrounding forest, downtown business owners and residents told The News & Observer last week. Most of Asteria could meet the same construction and conservation requirements as Chatham Park, which has been criticized by some residents and local environmentalists for clear-cutting, erosion and stormwater runoff. A smaller portion is outside the Chatham Park planned development area and would be subject to town rules. The next step for DMB Development is working with builders to incorporate town board feedback into detailed plans, including proposed landscaping and architecture. Town staff will review those plans and sign off on construction. The project would only come back to the town board if there are major changes. Pittsboro town spokesman Colby Sawyer has said the town does not have a timeline for its process, but Disney officials have said the first Asteria homes could go on the market by 2027.

Reeves says nuclear investment shows UK ‘back where it belongs'
Rachel Reeves has committed £16.7 billion to nuclear power projects as the country shifts away from fossil fuels. The Chancellor has signed off on £14.2 billion of investment to build the new Sizewell C nuclear plant in Suffolk, while Rolls-Royce has been named as the preferred bidder to build small modular reactors (SMRs) in a programme backed by £2.5 billion of taxpayers' cash. Ms Reeves will use Wednesday's spending review to allocate tens of billions of funding for major infrastructure projects over the rest of the decade. Officials hope SMRs will be cheaper and quicker to build than traditional power plants, and projects could be connected to the grid by the mid-2030s. Ms Reeves said: 'The UK is back where it belongs, taking the lead in the technologies of tomorrow with Rolls-Royce SMR as the preferred partner for this journey.' The SMR project could support up to 3,000 new skilled jobs and power the equivalent of around three million homes, with a first site expected to be allocated later this year by state-owned Great British Energy – Nuclear. Tuesday's announcement of Rolls-Royce as the preferred bidder came after the Government confirmed financial support for Sizewell C. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said new nuclear power capacity was needed to deliver a 'golden age of clean energy abundance'. Trade unions welcomed the Sizewell move, which the Treasury said would go towards creating 10,000 jobs, including 1,500 apprenticeships. But the head of a campaign group opposing the plant criticised the decision to commit the funding, saying it is still not clear what the total cost will be. Nuclear plants are seen as increasingly important electricity sources as the Government tries to decarbonise Britain's grid by 2030, replacing fossil fuels with green power. The last time Britain completed one was in 1987, which was the Sizewell B plant. Hinkley Point C, in Somerset, is under construction and is expected to produce enough power for about six million homes when it opens, but that may not be until 2031. The Energy Secretary said: 'We need new nuclear to deliver a golden age of clean energy abundance, because that is the only way to protect family finances, take back control of our energy, and tackle the climate crisis. 'This is the Government's clean energy mission in action – investing in lower bills and good jobs for energy security.' It will get the UK off the 'fossil fuel rollercoaster', he separately told The Guardian. 'We know that we're going to have to see electricity demand at least double by 2050. All the expert advice says nuclear has a really important role to play in the energy system. 'In any sensible reckoning, this is essential to get to our clean power and net zero ambitions.' The joint managing directors of Sizewell C, Julia Pyke and Nigel Cann, said: 'Today marks the start of an exciting new chapter for Sizewell C, the UK's first British-owned nuclear power plant in over 30 years.' At the peak of construction, Sizewell C is expected to provide 10,000 jobs and the company behind the project has already signed £330 million worth of contracts with local businesses. The plant, which will power the equivalent of six million homes, is planned to be operational in the 2030s. The GMB union said giving Sizewell C the go-ahead was 'momentous'. Regional Secretary Warren Kenny said: 'Nuclear power is essential for clean, affordable, and reliable energy – without new nuclear, there can be no net zero. 'Sizewell C will provide thousands of good, skilled, unionised jobs and we look forward to working closely with the Government and Sizewell C to help secure a greener future for this country's energy sector.' Alison Downes, of Stop Sizewell C, said ministers had not 'come clean' about the full cost of the project, which the group have previously estimated could be some £40 billion. She said: 'Where is the benefit for voters in ploughing more money into Sizewell C that could be spent on other priorities, and when the project will add to consumer bills and is guaranteed to be late and overspent just like Hinkley C?' The Government has also promised £2.5 billion over five years for fusion energy research and £6 billion of investment for the industrial base supporting the Royal Navy's nuclear submarine fleet. Jason Kelce Reveals the Truth on Major Personal Decision
Jason Kelce Reveals the Truth on Major Personal Decision originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Jason Kelce has been doing a lot since he retired from the Philadelphia Eagles in 2024. Since then, the Super Bowl-winning center has gotten himself a deal with ESPN as a football analyst, which also gave birth to his own talk show on the esteemed sports network, "They Call It Late Night With Jason Kelce." Advertisement On top of that, the 37-year-old also runs a very successful podcast with his brother, Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs, entitled "New Heights." Kelce has also ventured into multiple businesses. Apart from being a part-owner of Cincinnati, Ohio-based alcoholic beverage company Garage Beer, the NFL icon also decided to invest in his passion for golf. In May, Kelce was officially announced as a part-owner of the Sullivan County Golf Club in Liberty, New York. The seven-time Pro Bowl center joined actor Bill Murray and entrepreneur Mike Madden, the son of NFL legend Mike Madden, among others, as part of the golf club's high-profile ownership group. In a recent interview, Kelce opened up about his major personal decision to invest in Sullivan County. According to the former Eagles star, it was renowned golf writer and editor Tom Coyne who paved the way for him. Advertisement "So Tom and I played golf and did a podcast that he has," Kelce said, via kelcebrothers on Instagram. "And we just kind of got to know each other through that. "And, you know, I've been getting more involved with golf. I'm doing some stuff with my nonprofit, Underdog ... But (I've) been working with Tom and doing some things on that front. Jason Kelce on the ESPN postseason countdown set.© Kirby Lee-Imagn Images "And then he all of a sudden tells me, 'Hey, do you want to go play a hoopie with Bill Murray?' I'm like, '(Expletive) Yeah, I want to go play a hoopie with Bill Murray.' And that's when we kind of got to talking. "It sounded like this nine-hole course up in the Catskills in Sullivan County was going to be pretty killer. ... From there, we kind of came together, and now we've got a golf course." Advertisement While it was not disclosed how much Kelce invested in this new business venture, there's no denying that purchasing a stake in a golf course had to burn a hole in his pockets. However, as Kelce said during the announcement, his relationship with the sport of golf has grown over the past few years, and he came to the conclusion that it was due time to make "a long-term commitment" by putting his money where his mouth is.
