Stop and search powers extended after night of gang violence in Manchester
Stop and search powers have been extended by police after a night of gang violence in north Manchester on Monday (March 10).
Two people were stabbed before areas of Cheetham Hill, Crumpsall and Broughton were issued with the Section 60 order, giving officers enhanced powers to search people within a given area.
Two men were taken to hospital for treatment after suffering 'superficial stab injuries', with police receiving further reports of people carrying weapons in the Waterloo Road and Hazelbottom Road areas of Cheetham Hill earlier in the afternoon.

The Manchester Evening News understands the violence erupted following a flare up between two rival gangs in the area.
One witness described two youths being arrested and handcuffed by police on Esmond Road in Cheetham Hill. He said the area was plagued by gangs of teenagers. "Something is happening every single day. We hear warnings to be careful at night when we go to prayers at the mosque," he said.
Footage circulating on social media showed a heavy police presence, including armed response units, near the tram stop on Monday night.
Stop and search powers, initially due to end just before midnight on Tuesday was then extended by police until the same time on Wednesday (March 12), with an increased officer presence in the area.
Superintendent Muz Kernain said: "Violence will not be tolerated on our streets and we will come after the offenders. We strongly believe these were deliberate, targeted attacks with no wider threat to the public. While there have been no arrests so far, our officers are making significant progress as the investigation continues.
"Our officers will be in the area to reassure and support our communities, who will understandably be shocked by the events."
The Section 60 order gives officers extra powers to stop and search people in a defined geographic area and for a specified period of time. It allows officers to stop and search people even if they have no suspicion of a crime.
The area covered includes: Tetlow Lane, Heath Street, Leicester Road, St James' Road, Bury New Road, Appian Way, Olanyian Drive, Bloomfield Drive, Fairy Lane, Waterloo Road, Elizabeth Street, Queen's Road, Smedley Road, Hazelbottom Road, Waterloo Street, Brightside Road, Crescent Road and St Mark's Lane.
Appealing for any witnesses to come forward, Supt Kernain added: "Any members of the public with information on any of these incidents should call us quoting log 2344 of March 10, 2025. This could include eyewitness accounts or any relevant footage, such as CCTV, doorbell, or dashcam recordings.
"Anybody who has any information or concerns regarding ongoing crime within their community should contact GMP on 101 or via the reporting tools on our website, or by calling Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111. Always dial 999 in an emergency."

Police release image after sexual assault on Elizabeth Line train
Police have released an image of a man they want to speak to following a sexual assault on an Elizabeth Line train in east London. The incident happened on Friday 16 May, when a man sat next to a woman on a service from Stratford to Forest Gate and sexually assaulted her. Boy, 14, ran down the road screaming ‘I don't want to die' after being stabbed
A 14-year-old boy begged 'I don't want to die' after he was fatally stabbed to death in north Manchester. Officers were called to the Nevin Road area of New Moston at about 5pm on Sunday and found the victim with stab wounds. Despite the best efforts of the emergency services and the air ambulance, he died in hospital a short while later.
