Norwegian Foreign Minister visits Al Hussein Camp
Ammon News - Director General of the Department of Palestinian Affairs, Rafiq Khirfan, received Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide during an official visit to Al Hussein refugee camp on Wednesday to assess the living conditions of Palestinian refugees and the challenges they continue to face.
The visit was also attended by UNRWA Deputy Commissioner-General Antonia Marie De Meo, Norwegian Ambassador to Jordan Mona Juul, and Director of UNRWA Affairs in Jordan Olaf Becker.
The delegation toured the camp and reviewed the services provided by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in coordination with the Jordanian government.
Khirfan expressed gratitude for Norway's sustained support of UNRWA, both financially and through its consistent political backing of Palestinian refugee rights. He emphasized the importance of continued international support to ensure UNRWA can maintain its essential services amid ongoing regional challenges. Petra

These include: A comprehensive cultural center An environmental park A new administrative building for the Bseira district A Civil Status and Passport Office in Al-Hasa Completion of the Tafila Model School and the Qadisiyah Boys' Elementary School The ministry is also currently executing several secondary projects across the governorate's districts. Road Maintenance and Rehabilitation Projects 74,000 dinars allocated for road maintenance across the governorate, including asphalt removal, pothole patching, roadside cleaning, and culvert maintenance, with a completion period of 270 days. 238,000 dinars for rehabilitating the Qanan-Thawabiya Road, including gabion walls and obstacle removal, over 120 days. 253,000 dinars for improving secondary and agricultural roads in Ain Al-Bayda and Al-Hussein, involving road widening, asphalt layering, and safety enhancements, over 120 days. 299,000 dinars for paving the Jerf–Tafilah Road with similar rehabilitation measures. 437,000 dinars for upgrading the Silk Triangle–Aboor Road, including full roadbed preparation and modern lighting installations. 153,000 dinars to pave agricultural roads in Ain Al-Bayda and Al-Hussein, aiming to enhance access and support agricultural activity. 93,000 dinars for constructing a retaining wall near the Royal Highway in the Al-Rashideen/ Ain Al-Bayda area to ensure traffic sustainability. 136,000 dinars to pave a new service road along the Desert Highway in Al-Hasa to improve local connectivity. Although design studies have been completed, some challenges remain—such as delays in financial commitment documents and land zoning adjustments. Maharmeh emphasized that these projects align with the ministry's broader efforts to support sustainable development and improve the quality of life in Tafilah through the enhancement of healthcare, education, cultural, and recreational infrastructure. Ongoing Central Projects Improving the Tafila–Karak Road, from Abu Al-Banna to the security checkpoint, 17 km in length, with a budget of 1.9 million dinars, set to begin within weeks and expected to take 6 months. Maintenance work on the Royal Highway from Dlagha checkpoint to Ras Al-Naqab in Ma'an Governorate has been tendered and awarded for 370,000 dinars. These initiatives represent a significant investment in Tafilah's infrastructure and service networks, reinforcing the governorate's position on Jordan's national development map.

Palestine's status upgraded to 'Observer State' at International Labor Org.
The International Labor Organization (ILO) has unanimously approved upgrading Palestine's status from a "national liberation movement" to a "non-member observer state," marking a significant milestone in Palestine's international recognition. The decision was reached during the General Affairs Committee of the 113th International Labour Conference in Geneva. The final resolution is expected to be formally adopted in plenary on Thursday. This move aligns the ILO's position with that of other UN agencies such as UNESCO and the World Health Organization, following the UN General Assembly's Resolution ES-10/23 in May 2024. Expanded Rights for Palestine With the upgrade, Palestine will now enjoy expanded rights within the ILO, including: Delivering statements under all agenda items. Submitting proposals. Participating in all meetings with tripartite delegations Nominating delegates to the Conference Bureau starting in 2026. Ambassador Ibrahim Khraishi welcomed the decision, calling it a "firm and unambiguous response to the 'Israeli' Knesset's rejection of a Palestinian state." He added, "Some continue to reject fairness and persist in applying double standards, undermining the very principles of international legitimacy and justice." International support, opposition The resolution was strongly supported by the Arab Group, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and countries including France, China, Spain, and Switzerland. Both the Employers' and Workers' Groups backed the resolution, emphasizing its humanitarian necessity and alignment with the ILO's values. Hungary was the only country opposing the resolution.
