Ahmed Patel's son hails PM for Op Sindoor, says nation 'in safe hands'
Faisal Patel NEW DELHI: In remarks likely to raise eyebrows in the Congress, Faisal Patel -- son of the late party stalwart Ahmed Patel - has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership during Operation Sindoor , the cross-border strike on terror camps in Pakistan after the Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians. "It can't be better than who's running the show... The armed forces have done a great job, and PM Narendra Modi showed great leadership and brought us out of a huge crisis. I am proud of our armed forces. I have a lot of respect for Jaishankarji. How Modiji picks up bureaucrats, makes them leaders and puts them in ministry roles is a very good thing," Patel told ANI. In an interview to CNN-News18, he called Modi and home minister Amit Shah "great leaders" and declared the country was "in safe hands" - a remark loaded with political irony given Ahmed Patel's long rivalry with Modi during UPA years, when he was Sonia Gandhi's most trusted strategist. Though insisting he remains a Congress member, Patel pointed to internal drift in the party.

Congress hits back at Israel's India envoy for targeting Priyanka—‘don't need lecture'
'The Indian National Congress condemns the words used by Israel's Ambassador to India in response to the pain and anguish expressed by Smt. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, MP, on Israel's continuing genocide in Gaza. It is too much to expect the Modi Govt, which has shown extreme moral cowardice when it comes to speaking out on Israel's destruction of Gaza over the past 18-20 months, to take serious exception and objection to the Ambassador's response. We do and find it totally unacceptable,' Congress general secretary (communications) Jairam Ramesh posted on X. At the same time, the principal opposition party said it did not expect the Modi government to condemn Azar's statement, as it has so far shown 'extreme moral cowardice' in speaking out against Israeli military aggression that has drawn global outrage. New Delhi: The Congress Tuesday took strong exception to Israeli Ambassador to India Reuven Azar's pushback against Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's sharp criticism of Israel's continuing military action in Gaza, calling it 'unacceptable'. Congress deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, also slammed Azar, saying the party does not need the 'lecture' of the Israeli ambassador. 'It (the Congress) is a firm believer in the two state solution. The nation of Gandhi and Nehru has always believed in non-violence and peace. The Indian National Congress party does not need the lecture of the Israeli Ambassador,' Gogoi posted on X. India was the first non-Arab state to recognise the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) in 1974 as 'the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people'. India formally recognised Palestinian statehood in 1988. The Congress also received support from Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, who said that the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) should reprimand the Israeli envoy. 'Earlier too I had wanted to move a privilege motion against the Polish Ambassador (now former) for his tweet attacking me, but after a discussion with the Minister of External Affairs chose not to raise it. However this is emboldening them to speak to Indian parliamentarians in this tone and tenor while in our own country. This is unacceptable,' Chaturvedi said. Azar's response to Vadra, who has been highly critical of Israel's assault on Gaza, came on her statement in which she accused the Israeli state of committing genocide, 'murdering over 60,000 people, 18,430 of whom were children'. 'It has starved hundreds to death including many children and is threatening to starve millions. Enabling these crimes by silence and inaction is a crime in itself. It is shameful that the Indian Government stands silent as Israel unleashes this devastation on the people of Palestine,' Vadra wrote on X. Azar hit back at the Wayanad MP, claiming that Israel killed '25,000 Hamas terrorists'. He suggested that civilians had become collateral damage as Hamas 'hides behind civilians,' and shoots people 'trying to evacuate or receive assistance and their rocket fire'. 'Israel facilitated 2 million tonnes of food into Gaza while Hamas tries to sequestrate them, thereby creating hunger. Gaza population has grown 450% in the last 50 years, no genocide there. Don't buy Hamas numbers,' Azar wrote in his response. Meanwhile, in another post, Vadra also condemned the killing of Al Jazeera journalists in Israeli air strikes. 'The immeasurable courage of those who dare to stand for the truth will never be broken by the violence and hatred of the Israeli state. In a world where much of the media is enslaved to power and commerce, these brave souls reminded us of what true journalism is…' she wrote. Pratibha Shinde of Lok Sangharsh leaves Congress, after year-long stint as state vice-president, for NCP
Nashik: Pratibha Shinde, the state vice president of Congress and a prominent leader of Lok Sangharsh morcha defending tribal rights, has resigned from the party and has decided to move to NCP less than a year after her appointment. Shinde, who joined Congress in Dec 2023, has been a key advocate for the tribal communities in Nashik, Nandurbar, Dhule, and Jalgaon districts since the 1990s. Influenced by Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra, she chose to join the same party she had previously agitated against for tribal rights. "Rahul Gandhi is very committed to his ideals. Whatever you call it, we were agitating against the same Congress when it was in power for the rights of the tribals, and it is not that our fight was futile. We got our just demands sanctioned during our agitations. However, after we met Rahul Gandhi during a rally in Jalgaon-Jamod (Buldhana district) in Nov 2022, I was invited by him to join the party to ensure more teeth to the agitations. I accepted that a year later," Shinde said. In July 2024, Shinde was promoted as vice president of state Congress and she endeavoured to raise tribal demands with govt. However, after allegedly failing to receive support from the grassroots, she chose to sever ties with Congress. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Take a spoonful on an empty stomach and watch the fat go down the drain gofitlifeguide Click Here Undo "Whenever I met the seniors in the party, even the current ones, I was told that since I was directly inducted, I could draw my own programmes, clearly indicating that my position was not taken professionally in the party," alleged Shinde. Shinde also attempted to engage with senior members of NCP (SP) but received no response, leading her to join NCP and become part of Mahayuti. When questioned about her decision to transfer to NCP rather than any other Mahayuti party, Shinde said, "I cannot think of Shiv Sena in either form — be it led by Eknath Shinde or Uddhav Thackeray. BJP is also out of the question given the stand of all these three parties on Hindutva. Since NCP has been walking the path of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Shahu Maharaj, Mahatma Phule, and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar's teachings, I decided to join the party." Addressing her transition from an organisation fighting for tribal rights to active politics, Shinde said, "I have realised that fighting alone is not the solution. We have been fighting since 1992, and though we have achieved great milestones, it is important to bring in the change by being part of the system."
