Resident Evil Requiem release date, platforms, and trailer revealed at Summer Game Fest 2025
The game was introduced through a surprise trailer approximately 20 minutes after Capcom first teased the future of the Resident Evil series earlier in the show. That initial segment acknowledged the franchise's upcoming 30th anniversary in March 2026 but stopped short of revealing any new footage or specific details.
In a video message shared prior to the trailer reveal, Capcom game director Jun Takeuchi thanked fans for their continued support. 'Thanks to all of you, Resident Evil is about to celebrate its 30th anniversary this coming March,' Takeuchi said. 'We truly appreciate your continued support… bear with us a little longer… and it'll be ready.'
Resident Evil Requiem will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. The new game follows 2021's Resident Evil Village, which was the franchise's eighth mainline title.
The original Resident Evil was released in 1996 for the PlayStation, created by Shinji Mikami and Tokuro Fujiwara. The series has since evolved into a major multimedia franchise, with numerous sequels, remakes, and adaptations for film and television, solidifying its place in video game history.
With Requiem, Capcom looks to honor the legacy of the franchise while pushing the survival horror genre into its next chapter. The reveal closed out Summer Game Fest 2025 on a high note and has already generated strong excitement among fans.

'Weapons' prequel considered as Zach Cregger explores next film projects
Warner Bros. and New Line are in discussions with filmmaker Zach Cregger about developing a prequel to his hit horror film Weapons, centred on Amy Madigan's breakout character, Aunt Gladys. According to multiple sources, the idea would expand on a chapter Cregger originally wrote for Weapons that explored Gladys's backstory but was cut from the final script for length. No deals are currently in place, and no timeline has been set. Weapons, which uses a chapter-based structure to focus on different characters, opened to $43 million domestically from 8–10 August, exceeding expectations by more than $10 million. It has since reached $48 million domestically and $83 million worldwide. The film also achieved the best August Monday gross for a horror title, not adjusted for inflation. Cregger, whose 2022 debut Barbarian was a breakout success, is currently in pre-production in Prague on a Resident Evil reboot for Columbia Pictures. The project is expected to earn him a reported $20 million fee, with a scheduled release date of September 18 2026. Alongside the potential Weapons prequel, Cregger's future projects may include Henchman, an original story that would fall under Warner Bros.' DC Studios division, and Flood, a sci-fi script he has already completed. Warner Bros. co-chair Michael De Luca was among the first executives to express interest in Weapons after reading the script in January 2023. The studio secured the project for $38 million, outbidding other contenders, including Jordan Peele's Monkeypaw Productions. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter before the release of Weapons, Cregger said, 'Everything in this business changes on a dime. On the other side of Resident Evil, I may not be able to make anything. You just never know.'

Zach Cregger's Resident Evil film set for 2026 release with new story in Raccoon City
A new Resident Evil film is on the way from Barbarian and Weapons director Zach Cregger, bringing a fresh storyline to Capcom's long-running video game franchise. Scheduled for release on September 18 2026, the project will serve as a reboot while remaining faithful to the original games' lore. The Resident Evil series began in 1996 and became one of the most successful video game franchises in history. Its survival horror gameplay inspired multiple big-screen adaptations, most notably the Milla Jovovich-led films. Cregger's version will introduce an original plot set within Raccoon City, incorporating key elements from the games such as the Umbrella Corporation and the Raccoon City Police Department (RCPD). According to a leaked synopsis reported by Daniel RPK, the story centres on Bryan, a laid-back organ courier played by Austin Abrams. While travelling on a snowy mountain road to deliver an organ to Raccoon City General Hospital, Bryan hits a mysterious woman with his car. She survives, but events quickly escalate into a city-wide outbreak involving tentacle-based mutations and bio-engineered creatures. Abrams, known for roles in The Walking Dead, This is Us, Euphoria, and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, previously worked with Cregger on Weapons. Speaking to Inverse, Cregger assured fans that the film will respect the established canon. 'This is not breaking the rules of the games. I am the biggest worshiper of the games, so I'm telling a story that is a love letter to the games and follows the rules of the games. It is obedient to the lore… it's just a different story.' The film was announced in January 2025, with Sony acquiring the rights in March after a competitive bidding process. Filming is expected to take place primarily in the Czech Republic.

Battlefield 6 beta surpasses Call of Duty's all-time Steam player count record with over 500k peak
Battlefield 6's beta has set a new milestone for the series, surpassing Call of Duty's all-time concurrent player count record on Steam. During its peak, the beta reached over 500,000 concurrent players, overtaking Call of Duty's record of 491,670 set during the launch of Modern Warfare 2 (2022) and Warzone 2.0. This achievement comes as the Battlefield 6 beta enters its free-to-play phase, allowing open access for anyone on Steam. While the figure cements Battlefield 6 as one of Steam's most played games during its beta period, analysts note that the final game will not be free-to-play. This may affect whether the same audience will purchase the full release. Call of Duty's player counts on Steam only represent part of its audience, as many players use Game Pass, or consoles. Nonetheless, Battlefield 6's strong showing highlights significant interest in the title, particularly with player counts continuing to grow since the game's public access began. The beta's momentum also comes at a time when community sentiment towards recent Call of Duty entries has been mixed. Former Blizzard president Mike Morhaime commented that the franchise's cosmetic-focused direction, alongside other concerns, could give Battlefield 6 a competitive edge this year. Recent Call of Duty figures show its all-time Steam peak at 491,670, with daily averages now rarely exceeding 80,000. The release of Black Ops 6 saw a temporary rise to 315,000 before declining. EA has confirmed that a battle royale mode for Battlefield 6 is in development, which may launch as a free-to-play option, potentially sustaining engagement beyond release. Whether Battlefield 6 can convert beta interest into sales remains to be seen, but the record-breaking beta performance signals strong competition in the FPS genre ahead of launch.
