Zara's death: ‘Probe now focuses on possible criminal elements'

By: Bernama Text Size: KUALA LUMPUR: The investigation into the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Tun Datu Mustapha in Papar, Sabah, which was initially classified as sudden death, will now focus on possible criminal elements, including bullying. At a press conference here today, Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk M. Kumar said this was among the findings of a special CID team comprising nine officers and personnel sent to Sabah on Aug 11 to probe the case. The Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) today announced its decision to conduct an inquest into Zara Qairina's death after reviewing the investigation report submitted by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM). The inquest will be carried out under subsection 339(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code (Act 593) to establish the cause and circumstances surrounding her death. Kumar said the post-mortem confirmed that Zara Qairina died from severe brain injury due to a lack of oxygen and blood flow to the brain caused by a fall, consistent with the initial diagnosis. So far, police have taken statements from 82 witnesses, including students, with some recalled for further questioning to establish what had happened before the fall. 'Police have also provided psychological intervention for 124 SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha students identified as traumatised by the incident, to help restore their confidence. Kumar also stressed there were no elements of a 'cover-up' in the investigation. He said the police are also probing the spread of false news on social media about the case, including allegations that the victim was put in a washing machine, to which a 39-year-old woman was arrested in Rawang under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act and Section 323 of the Penal Code. 'To date, 15 investigation papers have been opened related to the spread of unverified information that could disrupt public order and the investigation process,' he said. On Aug 8, the AGC said Zara Qairina's grave needed to be exhumed for a post-mortem to allow further investigation. On Aug 9, her remains were exhumed from the Tanjung Ubi Muslim Cemetery in Kampung Mesapol, Sipitang, and taken to Queen Elizabeth I Hospital for the post-mortem before being reburied at the same cemetery on Aug 12. Two Chinese nationals charged with flying drone over restricted area
KUALA LUMPUR: Two Chinese nationals have claimed trial to charges of espionage and documentation in a restricted area after they were nabbed by the police for flying a drone in Wisma Pertahanan on Aug 6, Sinar Harian reports. Both suspects pleaded not guilty after they were charged under Section 3(a) and Section 4 of the Official Secrets Act before Sessions Court Judge Izralizam Sanusi on Wednesday (Aug 13). Judge Izralizam denied the duo bail and set Sept 11 for the appointment of legal counsel and the submission of documents, the Malay language daily reported. Earlier, the police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had reported, in a Facebook post, that the two Chinese nationals were detained for trespassing in the restricted area of Wisma Pertahanan, Jalan Padang Tembak, on Aug 6. The CID said that the two suspects were detected by Military Police (MP) personnel conducting patrols in the area. According to the statement, investigations found that the suspects were flying a drone in the football field near Wisma Pertahanan before they were apprehended. "Police seized various equipment, including drones and several memory cards, and a search of their hotel room uncovered more drone equipment," the statement said. It added that interrogation of the suspects revealed that the drone recordings were made on the instruction of their employer, but they were unaware of the purpose and objective of the surveillance. "Police are also in contact with several international and local agencies to determine the background and travel records of both individuals," it added.

Chinese national nabbed for allegedly assaulting KLIA Immigration officer
SEPANG: A Chinese national has been arrested after allegedly assaulting an Immigration officer during a departure inspection at KL International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 on Wednesday (Aug 13) evening. The incident occurred at about 7.40pm when four Chinese nationals - two adults and two children - approached the departure Immigration counter. Checks revealed that none of them had entry records into Malaysia, prompting the counter officer to refer the matter to a team supervisor for further verification. "Unhappy with being asked to allow other passengers to proceed while checks were ongoing, the female adult suspect reportedly hurled verbal abuse at the officer. "She then grabbed the officer's headscarf and forcefully pushed her head against a pillar in front of the counter," the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) said in a statement on Thursday (Aug 14). A brief scuffle ensued, and the suspect allegedly refused to calm down despite repeated instructions. "Enforcement officers from the AKPS called in the Aviation Security (AvSec) team to bring the situation under control. "The officer sustained swelling around her left eye, a headache on the right side of her head, and body aches. She was later sent to Cyberjaya Hospital for treatment and a medical report," the agency said. Police reports were lodged, and the suspect is now in police custody. "She is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant, Section 332 of the same code for causing hurt to a public servant, and Section 353 of the same code for using criminal force against a public servant," the AKPS said. The AKPS stressed that it would not compromise on any acts of violence, insult, or threats towards officers on duty, and called for appropriate legal action to be taken against the suspect.

Foreign student remanded over Kajang knife attack
KAJANG: Frustration and extreme stress from studying far from home may have driven a 24-year-old university student to go on a rampage here yesterday. The woman allegedly injured several people during the incident, with two still warded in hospital. Kajang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof said the suspect has been identified as a student at a public university in Malaysia. "She has been remanded for seven days until Aug 20 to assist in investigations. "So far, statements have been taken from 11 witnesses, including the victims," he said in a statement today. On whether the suspect was under the influence of any substances at the time, Naazron said there was no record of her taking medication or suffering from depression. "However, she appeared to be under stress due to personal issues, but the actual cause of the incident is still under investigation," he said. The two victims who were admitted to hospital are reported to be in stable condition. Earlier, media reports stated that a foreign woman was arrested after running amok and road users with a knife near a shopping mall in Kajang. In the 11.58am incident, the suspect had been driving recklessly when she rammed into three motorcycles at a traffic light intersection. She then exited her car brandishing a knife and attacked people at the scene. The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder, Section 279 for reckless driving, and Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
