Godavari riverfront development plan works commence in Rajamahendravaram City
The Rajamahendravaram Municipal Corporation (RMC) kick-started works of the ₹8 crore Godavari Riverfront Development Plan along the banks of river Godavari, in preparation for the Godavari Pushkarams in 2027 with a bhumi puja ceremony. As part of the river-front development, 22 parks with supporting infrastructure will be developed along the banks of the river Godavari.
Additionally, East Godavari Collector P. Prasanthi, announced that the Centre has granted ₹100 crore for the Akhanda Godavari project and works would begin soon. Of this ₹97 crore would be spent on the beautification and development of infrastructure facilities within the Rajamahendravaram city.
RMC Commissioner Ketan Garg said that works worth ₹128 crore related to the Godavari Pushkarams-2027 are currently underway in the city.
Attending the bhumi puja for the river-front development works were Rajamahendravaram MLA Adireddi Srinivas, Rajanagaram MLA B. Balarama Krishna, Rajamahendravaram Urban Development Authority Chairman Boddu Venkataramana Chowdary and other public representatives.

Kochi: It seems the state's dream of having a semi-high-speed rail line is unlikely to become a reality soon, with neither Centre nor the state govt taking any concrete steps to take any of the two proposals forward. As railways is yet to take a favourable stand on Sreedharan's proposal even after four months, the state govt's special representative in Delhi, K V Thomas, has requested Sreedharan to meet both Vaishnaw and railway officials. However, Sreedharan's stand is that he cannot approach Centre unless the state govt officially entrusts him to do so, demanding that the project proposal be taken up for further action. It seems the state govt is not planning to hold any further discussions with Sreedharan regarding the alternative proposal. The state govt submitted a draft of the semi-high-speed rail line proposal, prepared by Sreedharan, to the Union govt on Feb 10. The alternative proposal was submitted after the railway ministry informed that it could not approve the SilverLine project proposed by K-Rail. "It's been four months since the state govt submitted Sreedharan's proposal to Centre. But during the meeting, the proposal wasn't even mentioned or taken up for discussion. The only way to revive the project now is through pressure from Sreedharan himself. I've requested him to meet Vaishnav or railway officials directly to explain the project's benefits," said Thomas, who was present alongside Vijayan during the meeting with the railway minister. He also expressed unhappiness over Vijayan's recent statement expressing hope over SilverLine. "The chief minister's recent statement that SilverLine will become a reality indicates that the govt is still focused on that project. State govt representatives have not held any discussions with me before or after their recent meeting with the railway minister. I cannot approach Centre directly regarding my proposal unless the state govt officially requests me to take the initiative. If they do, I am ready to hold discussions with Centre," Sreedharan told TOI. Minister V Abdurahman, who is in charge of railways, said the govt was not opposed to considering Sreedharan's proposal. He, however, did not give a clear answer when asked whether the state would request Sreedharan to hold further discussions with Centre. "Kerala is open to implementing either the SilverLine or Sreedharan's alternative project. SilverLine is not a closed chapter," he said.

Diplomacy is about ‘incrementalism', says Congress leader Manish Tewari
In the face of questions raised by the Congress party on the 'political value' of the people that the multi-party delegations had met, and what they had 'actually accomplished' on the Centre's international diplomatic outreach after the recent India-Pakistan conflict, delegates said diplomacy was about 'incrementalism', and was not a '20-20 cricket match'. Ahead of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar's meetings with two delegations, Congress general secretary (communication) Jairam Ramesh had said on Wednesday (June 4, 2025) in a post on X that there needed to be an 'honest assessment of what was actually accomplished' and not what was 'spin doctored'. Mr. Jaishankar on Thursday (June 5, 2025) met the delegation headed by senior Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader K. Kanimozhi that visited Russia, Latvia, Slovenia, Greece, and Spain, and the delegation headed by senior Janata Dal-United (JD-U) leader Sanjay K. Jha that visited Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia. 'There are reliable reports that the welcome in some countries was very lukewarm — to put it mildly — and that the political value of the people the MPs met was below par. Videos of the MPs engaging in silly fun and frolic while on a serious national mission have also been surfacing,' Mr. Ramesh said. Senior Congress leader Manish Tewari, who was part the delegation led by Nationalist Congress Party-Sharadchandra Pawar (NCP-SP) MP Supriya Sule to Egypt, Qatar, Ethiopia, and South Africa, on the question of whether the tour succeeded in its aim, spoke of consolidation of gains. 'The hyphenation (India-Pak) is a temporary mirage. It is only natural that when two nuclear powers are in conflict the world gets concerned,' the Congress leader said. 'We live in a contested political space. But for now, exposing Pakistan's perfidy should be the national priority,' Mr. Tewari said on the question of criticism from his own party on the utility of such a tour. Other delegates also contested the Congress's claim. JD(U) leader Sanjay K. Jha said that his delegation had met the Japanese Foreign Minister, had breakfast with Ambassadors to Japan from various countries, and in Jakarta, met with ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Ambassadors. 'To criticise an all-party delegation, which spoke in one voice on such an important issue, is a new low for the Congress,' Mr. Jha said. Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) MP John Brittas, who was part of Mr. Jha's delegation, said it had clarified India's viewpoint. 'We didn't go to play a 20-20 cricket match, for there to be winners or losers. Each person is entitled to their own opinion. Our delegation has laid down the foundation, clarifying India's viewpoint, and also underlined the dangers of Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. It is for the government now to build over it,' Mr. Brittas said. The president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), Asaduddin Owaisi, who was part of a delegation led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Baijayant Panda to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Algeria, said that it was 'subjective criticism' to claim that the delegation did not meet people of 'political value'. 'Out of the four countries we visited, one (Algeria) is currently a non-permanent member of the UNSC (United Nations Security Council), and another (Bahrain) will get a seat next year. They exert influence on Pakistan and will be crucial in India's efforts to put Pakistan on the FATF (Financial Action Task Force) grey list,' Mr. Owaisi said, adding that the delegation met top decision-making bodies in all the four countries, and also members of think tanks.

Delimitation concerns will be discussed at an appropriate time: MHA
A day after it announced the schedule for conducting Census-2027, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Thursday said the concerns of southern states about the delimitation exercise, which will take place on the basis of the census data, will be taken care of and discussed with all concerned at an appropriate time. In a series of posts on 'X', the MHA said budget allocation has never been a constraint for conducting the census, as funds are always ensured by the government. The entire 2021 Census exercise was estimated to cost the government over ₹13,000 crore. The Budget for 2025–26 allocated ₹574.80 crore for census surveys and statistics / the Registrar General of India (RGI). The MHA did not explicitly state whether the census data could be available in time for a delimitation commission to decide on the number of seats in the Lok Sabha before the 2029 polls. However, the ministry alluded to Home Minister Amit Shah's earlier statements on the delimitation exercise. It stated that Shah has 'clarified on many occasions that in the delimitation exercise the concerns of southern states will be taken care of and discussed with all concerned at an appropriate time'. The delimitation of constituencies for the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies is to be carried out on the basis of the first Census after 2026. It will also be the basis for reserving a third of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies. Tamil Nadu, and other southern states such as Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Telangana, fear that the delimitation exercise, if conducted solely on the basis of population, would diminish their political representation in Parliament. Some of the southern states have demanded a freeze on the number of Lok Sabha seats, based on the 1971 Census, for another 25 years. The provisional data for the 2011 Census was released on 31 March 2011, 25 days after its population enumeration phase ended, while the final data was released two years later on 30 April 2013. The MHA also defended the delay in holding the Census exercise. It said Census 2021 was to be conducted and all preparations were completed. However, due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic across the country, the Census work was postponed. The aftershock of Covid-19 continued for quite some time, it said. The ministry said Covid-19 disrupted all sectors including education. It said around 3 million enumerators are needed for the Census. Enumerators, who are primary school teachers, are key persons for conducting the Census. Conducting the Census after Covid could have disrupted primary education immensely, the MHA said. The MHA also pointed out that countries which conducted the Census immediately after Covid-19 faced issues regarding the quality and coverage of Census data. It said the government has decided to commence the process of Census forthwith, which will complete on 1 March 2027 — the reference date for the Census. The Centre on Wednesday said Census-2027, with caste enumeration, will be undertaken in two phases across the country. It will be completed by 1 October 2026 in snow-bound and hilly areas like Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, and by 1 March 2027 in the rest of the country. The reference date for the headcount will be 12 am on 1 March 2027 for the rest of the country.
