Thane: The fate of several public infrastructure facilities along Thane's Ghodbunder Road — including two
(FoBs), 28 Metro station landings, and new decorative bus shelters — hangs in the balance as the ongoing highway widening project threatens to dismantle them.A TOI spot survey between Bhayanderpada and Kapurbawdi found that the landings for Metro 4 stations at Bhayanderpada, Owala, and Panchamrut are nearing completion and are positioned on medians, which are set to be removed.

The remaining landings are yet to be built. Ironically, both the Metro and

, raising questions about planning oversight.Locals and traffic police expressed concern over the conflicting designs, as both the existing Manpada and Tatwagyan Vidyapeeth FoBs also land on medians, which may require them to be extended or relocated. Newly built theme-based pedestrian and bus shelters along the median on the highway could also be dismantled. It may be recalled that the Metro 4 planning and execution started in 2017, while the extension of the Ghodbunder highway was proposed in 2023 during the tenure of CM Eknath Shinde, and works started last year.
An MMRDA statement confirmed that 28 of the 30 Metro entry/exit structures on Ghodbunder highway were designed to land on the median between the main road and service lanes. A response on what will happen to these structures once the medians are removed was still awaited."Either these structures will be razed, or pedestrians will have to dangerously cross the highway to access them — both outcomes waste taxpayer money," a resident pointed out. Thane traffic police admitted that pedestrian access could be affected, but said they have not been briefed on any corrective measures.Transport minister and Owala-Majiwada MLA Pratap Sarnaik said he has raised the issue with MMRDA. "I will ensure the FoBs at Tatwagyan and Manpada are extended to reach the footpaths. Future FoBs will land at the highway's outer edges. The Metro bridge landing points will also need to be looked into," he added. Earlier, TOI had reported how Metro 4 construction threatened five FoBs between Modella Check Naka and Manpada. The MMRDA preserved them at the time — whether that will happen again remains to be seen.Thane: The fate of several public infrastructure facilities along Thane's Ghodbunder Road — including two foot overbridges (FoBs), 28 Metro station landings, and new decorative bus shelters — hangs in the balance as the ongoing highway widening project threatens to dismantle them.A TOI spot survey between Bhayanderpada and Kapurbawdi found that the landings for Metro 4 stations at Bhayanderpada, Owala, and Panchamrut are nearing completion and are positioned on medians, which are set to be removed. ‘Withdraw social quotas for FYJC in minority colleges'

Mumbai: The Maharashtra Association of Minority Educational Institutions has written to the school education department requesting the immediate withdrawal of the social and constitutional reservations imposed on minority colleges for admissions to first-year junior colleges (FYJC) in minority institutions. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The association has also asked the department to correct the calculation of management and in-house quota seats as per the prevailing rules and past practices. Additionally, it has asked for clarification in writing or in a govt resolution that these reservations are not applicable to minority colleges, in compliance with judicial directives. TOI reported on Wednesday that the state imposed social reservations, such as SC, ST and OBC quotas, in the 50% non-minority seats at minority institutions for FYJC admissions. Principals said the matter came to light after the seat matrices of their institutions were made available on the admission portal. The association, in the letter, said the social reservations have been imposed despite the absence of an official govt resolution or a written circular. It added, "Amazingly, the handbook issued by the govt for online admissions for the current year also does not specify any quota for social and parallel reservations in minority institutions." Additionally, the association said the calculation of management and in-house quota seats, as shown on the admission portal, is factually incorrect and that these quotas were always calculated out of the total admissible intake. The members of the association also attached a copy of a 2017 Bombay High Court ruling which set aside Mumbai University's decision to impose constitutional reservations on minority colleges, reinforcing that such impositions are not legally sustainable. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now While the FYJC centralised admission information booklet cited a circular from the general administration department stating the mandate to fill up seats of parallel reservations through the concerned social reservation category, the association said these are applicable for recruitment of staff in govt departments and have nothing to do with minority institutions.

Minister meets artistes, pledges support to regional cinema

Ranchi: During a meeting with a visiting delegation of regional artistes on Thursday, the state's minister of tourism, art, culture, and youth affairs, Sudivya Kumar, assured that steps will soon be taken to boost the state's film industry, especially Nagpuri cinema. The meeting was attended by members of the Jharkhand Kalakar Andolan Sangharsh Samiti (JKASS), who submitted a list of demands to strengthen the visibility and viability of local films and artists. Notably, the meeting comes days after TOI's Johar Jharkhand, a special series themed on film, music and state's artistes. The key demand was mandatory screening of Jharkhandi-language films, including Nagpuri, in cinema halls and panchayat buildings. The artists also called for the restructuring of the Jharkhand Film Development Corporation Limited (JFDCL), better subsidy policies, and artist welfare schemes. "Currently, only a handful of theatres screen Nagpuri films, and most shows don't run beyond a few days. This limits our audience and impact. But the minister's response has given us hope. For the first time, there is serious acknowledgement of our issues," said Vivek Nayak, vice president of JKASS. Sudivya posted on X that the artists' suggestions would be taken seriously and discussed at the right forums. He also hinted at upcoming reforms, including an artist insurance scheme and institutional changes in the state's film policy.

Samruddhi Mahamarg opens fully, cuts down travel time from Mumbai to Nagpur by 9 hours

The Hindu Hridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg is now open end to end after the 76-kilometre leg between Igatpuri and Amane (Thane) was inaugurated by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday, providing a seamless 701-kilometre connectivity from Mumbai to Nagpur. The six-lane expressway that is now fully operational will reduce the travel time between the two cities by half from 17 hours to around eight hours. The event organised at Igatpuri was also attended by Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar and other ministers of the Mahayuti government. The completion of the last leg brings the entire project to realisation after decades of intricate engineering issues, political will and huge investments. The project was initially estimated at Rs 55,500 crore, but as it crossed various technical and logistical barriers and the project cost rose to over Rs 61,000 crore. At the inauguration, Fadnavis, who initially conceptualised the project in his first tenure as a CM, said, 'This is not merely a road, it is a corridor of Maharashtra's economy. It directly connects 24 districts with JNPT and paves the way for growth, transportation, logistics and opportunities in agriculture, tourism and industrial development.' The final stretch of the corridor passing through Nashik and Thane districts had some of the most challenging construction tasks. The 76-kilometre section comprises five twin tunnels of 10.73 kilometres in length, including the broadest tunnel in the country near Igatpuri that is 8 km long and 17.61 metres wide. It also has India's first fire-fighting system in a tunnel. As many as 17 viaducts with an aggregate length of more than 10.56 kilometers had to be built in hilly and forested territory. 'Because of a thick forest block, absence of access roads, hilly terrain and high rainfall in Igatpuri, we had to work with utmost caution. Nevertheless, we adopted the best safety measures to facilitate a safe working environment,' said K Mallikharjuna Rao, Business Unit Head, Hydro and Underground, Afcons Infrastructure Ltd, who were a part of construction of the twin tunnels. This section also has interchanges at Igatpuri, Khutghar and Amane. More than 60 low and high voltage power lines had to be shifted for the construction along with the new rail overbridge. The road now provides a safer route to the scary Kasara Ghat and shortens the journey time from Igatpuri to Kasara to eight minutes. The Samruddhi Mahamarg is a greenfield expressway designed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) that passes through 392 villages in 26 talukas in 10 districts. It directly links Nagpur, Wardha, Amravati, Washim, Buldhana, Jalna, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Ahilyanagar, Nashik and Thane and indirectly serves many others such as Chandrapur, Nanded, Dhule, Palghar and Raigad. The highest speed limit is fixed at 120 kmph on flat terrain and 100 kmph in ghat sections. Shinde said, 'We initiated the project in our term and completed it in our term only. This access control road will prove to be a game changer in economic activity between Mumbai and Vidarbha. Earlier, the farmer who used to travel for three days to come to Mumbai with farm produce now is able to reach the same day.' Besides its huge size, the expressway has been built focusing on conservation and intelligent engineering, according to MSRDC officials. For the conservation of wildlife, 92 overpasses and eight underpasses have been constructed for the safe passage of animals. Over 3.3 million trees have been transplanted with native species and 1,000 farm ponds have been created along the road to support agriculture in the regions. Fadnavis also highlighted advanced features such as temperature sensitive fire fighting systems, rainwater harvesting systems and well designed interchanges. 'The fire fighting system and temperature sensitive surfaces are designed such that they get activated when temperatures rise above 60 degrees Celsius and self-deactivates when the temperature goes below 30 degrees Celsius,' he said. The expressway will also facilitate the transportation of goods between MIHAN in Nagpur and JNPT in Mumbai with faster and more reliable cargo movement. In future, there are proposals for 200 MW of solar power generation along the route, with 22 facility centres being planned to benefit travellers. A gas pipeline from Konkan to Nagpur through this corridor is also planned that will ensure constant fuel supply to industries along this route. After Samruddhi Mahamarg, the government is now set to apply the model of access controlled expressways to other proposed corridors such as the Mumbai-Pune expressway missing link and Shaktipeeth Mahamarg, thereby increasing the network of expressways across the state. 'We are constructing an access control grid so that one is able to reach any corner of the state to other within 8 to 10 hours only,' Shinde added. In his address, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar said, 'When the project started, everyone opposed it, some even organised protests… The estimated amount was Rs 55,500 crore, but owing to factors, it has crossed Rs 61,000 crore now. But the magnitude of this achievement for the state is huge.'
