Metro 4 to be first line to begin operations sans a depot

MUMBAI: The upcoming Mumbai Metro 4 corridor—connecting Gaimukh in Thane to Wadala in Mumbai—will be the city's first metro line to begin operations without a dedicated depot. To enable trials and system testing, rakes meant for Mumbai Metro Line 2B will be temporarily brought in from the Mandale depot in Mankhurd. Once ready, the 32-km Mumbai Metro 4 line is expected to significantly decongest the Eastern Express Highway and improve east-west connectivity across Mumbai and Thane. (Praful Gangurde /HT Photo) In the absence of a ready depot at Mogharpada, the Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL) has floated a ₹8.28-crore tender for the transportation of 8 six-coach trains, or 48 coaches in all, from Mandale to the Metro 4 viaduct between Gaimukh and Cadbury Junction and back. This workaround comes as the Mogharpada depot, which was intended to serve Mumbai Metro 4 and its extension Mumbai Metro 4A, is facing construction delays. An official said that this was the first time in Mumbai's metro history that rakes would be physically transported from one corridor to another, given the lack of rail connectivity between Metro 2B and Metro 4. Since the two corridors are not linked by tracks, the rakes will be hauled over city roads using hydraulic multi-axle trailers, each carrying one coach weighing about 40 tonnes. The operation will be conducted primarily at night to avoid traffic congestion and will require permissions from multiple civic and traffic authorities. Officials said the tender includes the entire scope of work such as dismantling coaches if needed, loading and unloading, securing permissions, transit insurance and safe delivery of the rakes to the destination. The contract period is 24 months, extendable by 12 months, depending on when the Mogharpada depot becomes functional. 'We are making optimal use of idle rakes from Metro 2B to ensure that trial runs on Metro 4 are not delayed,' said a senior official, requesting anonymity, 'Waiting for the depot to be ready would have pushed commissioning timelines further.' MMMOCL is also exploring temporary inspection facilities beyond Gaimukh metro station, where basic trial runs can be conducted on elevated tracks. The testing will include rolling stock integration with signalling, telecom, and traction systems. The rakes intended for Metro 2B, which is still under construction, are currently lying unused at the Mandale depot. Hence, the authorities took a decision to divert these trains to serve Metro 4 and 4A for the time being, until Metro 2B becomes operational in the next year or two. Metro 2B is in the works between Mandale and Andheri West. Once ready, the 32-km Mumbai Metro 4 line is expected to significantly decongest the Eastern Express Highway and improve east-west connectivity across Mumbai and Thane. The corridor is designed to cater to high ridership volumes and provide an alternative to overburdened suburban rail services.

New flyover reduces travel time at Kasarwadavli Junction in Thane; next phase after rains

THANE: The commute time for Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Thane motorists travelling to Gujarat and the extended Western Mumbai suburbs using the Ghodbunder Highway will reduce by a few minutes. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Vehicles can now bypass the chronic Kasarwadavli junction using the newly constructed flyover, cabinet minister Pratap Sarnaik said on Tuesday after inaugurating the bridge constructed by the MMRDA on the Thane to Gaimukh lane. The opening of the flyover was delayed by nearly three months as the finishing works on the structure took an unexpectedly long time. TOI highlighted the plight of commuters as they spent crucial time trying to cross the pockmarked and narrowed lanes at the arterial junction, often taking over 35 minutes. The four-lane flyover project is being constructed in two phases, bypassing the Kasarwadavli junction. The first phase involves two lanes spanning nearly 800m built over the Thane to Gaimukh direction. The second phase will involve construction on the Gaimukh to Thane lanes, which will be taken up after the rains, Sarnaik said after flagging off the flyover on Tuesday afternoon. The flyover, built in coordination with the existing Metro 4 line, also has an underpass to facilitate the crossover of local traffic to the opposite lanes. 'The flyover is a crucial infrastructure project being executed in Thane. The bridge bypassing the crucial Kasarwadavli junction on the Thane to Gaimukh lanes will reduce travel time for motorists heading towards Gujarat and the western Mumbai suburbs, otherwise spent on crossing the busy crossroad,' informed Sarnaik.

Green zone in Thane may be deleted for Metro 4 car depot

MUMBAI: The state urban development department (UDD) plans to delete a green zone at Mogharpada in Thane, and change its use, to clear the way for a metro car shed to be built for Line 4. The 32-km-long metro corridor, one of the longest metro lines in Mumbai, will connect Wadala in Mumbai with Kasarvadavli in Thane. An elevated corridor with 32 stations, it is 80% complete. A notification issued on March 20 proposes to change the use of the 176-hectare (435 acres) plot from a green zone, which prohibits construction, to a metro car depot. Surplus land will be used by the Mumbai Metropolitan Development Authority (MMRDA) for residential/commercial purposes. The UDD has sought the mandatory suggestions and objections from the public, after which a final notification will be issued. Located near the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) and the arterial Ghodbunder Road in Thane, the land in question is owned by the state but has traditionally been used for cultivation by 167 lessees. The government is still working on a compensation package that is amenable to the lessees. The car shed in question was to be built in Owale in Thane but was shifted to Mogharpada in the wake of the massive protests that erupted when the Metro 3 yard was built in the Aarey forest a few years ago. Since a large number of trees would have had to be axed in Owale, and only a few in Mogharpada, the site was moved. Work on Metro 4 began without a car depot site. The line was to be operational in 2024 but the new deadline is 2026. Line 4 will provide interconnectivity with the Eastern Express Highway, Central Railway, Mono Rail, ongoing Metro Line 2B (D N Nagar to Mandale), and the proposed Line 5 (Thane to Kalyan), Line 6 (Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli) and Line 8 (Wadala to General Post Office). In the north, Metro 4 will be extended from Kasarvadavli to Gaimukh and will be called Line 4A. In the south, it will be extended from Wadala to General Post Office in South Mumbai, and will be called Metro 11. The Mogharpada car shed will service all these metro lines.

Metro 4 depot stalled over payout, CM orders eviction

Mumbai: The state govt is preparing to forcibly evict individuals "obstructing" the construction of Metro 4's car depot at Mogharpada in Thane. Physical possession of the land is still pending despite its official handover to MMRDA. "We've accepted most of the demands of the project-affected persons (PAPs), including those related to floor space index and road widening. But a handful of PAPs are holding the entire project to ransom, delaying benefits for thousands of commuters," said a senior MMRDA along Ghodbunder Road on the western fringe of Thane city, the depot site was chosen for its strategic connectivity to Metro 4 (Wadala-Kasarvadavli), as well as future extensions to Gaimukh, Mira Road and the proposed Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan corridor. The project faced opposition from 167 locals who claimed to have cultivated the govt land for decades. They argued that acquisition without fair compensation would leave them without a livelihood. To break the deadlock, govt proposed a compensation model similar to Cidco's in Navi Mumbai: landowners were offered 22.5% of developed land and non-owners 12.5%. "Although land was handed over on paper, physical possession is still pending, which is why work hasn't started," the official said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cuenca: Descubre cómo Amazon CFD puede ayudarte a invertir como un pro Empezar ahora Subscríbete Undo With resistance continuing and fresh demands emerging, CM Devendra Fadnavis has directed the district collector to initiate eviction proceedings against those stalling the project. MMRDA has already floated tenders for depot construction, with a joint venture of SEW Infrastructure and Vishwa Samudra Engineering emerging as the lowest bidder at Rs 906 crore. The proposed facility will include 64 stabling lines (32 for current use and the remaining as future provision), 10 inspection bays, workshop lines, an operations control centre, an administrative building, maintenance facilities, staff quarters and an auxiliary substation. Meanwhile, to avoid further delays in train trials, MMRDA is exploring a temporary solution by acquiring a smaller parcel to build a pit line for primary maintenance. However, this interim fix —if cleared by the safety commissioner—will limit train frequency, as the pit line can service only a few rakes at a time. Bhayanderpada Flyover Is Now Open For Public, Mumbai-Thane Travel Time To Reduce By 25 Mins

Last Updated: The newly opened Bhayanderpada Flyover in Thane is a four-lane structure designed to significantly reduce travel time between Thane and Mumbai by 15–25 minutes. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde officially inaugurated the Bhayanderpada Flyover, a significant traffic project in Thane recently. It is anticipated that the new four-lane flyover will cut the travel time between Thane and Mumbai by 15 to 25 minutes, with the goal of alleviating traffic on the congested Ghodbunder highway. Shinde described the flyover as a significant milestone for the region, as per The Times of India. He stated that it will not only help everyday commuters in Thane but also improve communication between the northern suburbs of Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Bhiwandi, Vasai-Virar, Nashik and even Gujarat. The Bhayanderpada Flyover is part of an innovative three-tier integrated traffic system: 'This is the first such model in the Thane region," Shinde said as quoted by The Free Press Journal. The event was also attended by Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) senior officials. Direct Metro Access & Smarter Traffic Flow Once the Metro is operational, commuters will be able to access stations directly from the flyover corridor. The design also ensures a smart separation of traffic: Thane city traffic uses a slip road without signal stops Outbound traffic uses the elevated flyover and underpass 'This flyover will accelerate traffic flow not just within Thane but across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), including access to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port," Shinde added. Shinde added that other upgrades to the infrastructure were in progress. He reportedly said that the integration of the Metro 4 and 4A lines, which link Wadala, Kasarvadavli, and Gaimukh, with the Dahisar Metro line is imminent. Soon, land would be acquired for the connection in collaboration with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The opening of the flyover will separate outbound traffic from Thane city traffic, enabling the former to use the elevated corridor and underpass while the latter can use the slip road and skip the signal. This will not only reduce congestion and fuel consumption but will also significantly increase travel efficiency. 'The flyover will not only increase traffic speed but also stimulate economic and industrial movement for the Mumbai metropolitan region (MMR)," Sanjay Mukherjee, MMRDA commissioner, told TOI.
