Green zone in Thane may be deleted for Metro 4 car depot
MUMBAI: The state urban development department (UDD) plans to delete a green zone at Mogharpada in Thane, and change its use, to clear the way for a metro car shed to be built for Line 4. The 32-km-long metro corridor, one of the longest metro lines in Mumbai, will connect Wadala in Mumbai with Kasarvadavli in Thane. An elevated corridor with 32 stations, it is 80% complete.
A notification issued on March 20 proposes to change the use of the 176-hectare (435 acres) plot from a green zone, which prohibits construction, to a metro car depot. Surplus land will be used by the Mumbai Metropolitan Development Authority (MMRDA) for residential/commercial purposes.
The UDD has sought the mandatory suggestions and objections from the public, after which a final notification will be issued.
Located near the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) and the arterial Ghodbunder Road in Thane, the land in question is owned by the state but has traditionally been used for cultivation by 167 lessees. The government is still working on a compensation package that is amenable to the lessees.
The car shed in question was to be built in Owale in Thane but was shifted to Mogharpada in the wake of the massive protests that erupted when the Metro 3 yard was built in the Aarey forest a few years ago. Since a large number of trees would have had to be axed in Owale, and only a few in Mogharpada, the site was moved.
Work on Metro 4 began without a car depot site. The line was to be operational in 2024 but the new deadline is 2026. Line 4 will provide interconnectivity with the Eastern Express Highway, Central Railway, Mono Rail, ongoing Metro Line 2B (D N Nagar to Mandale), and the proposed Line 5 (Thane to Kalyan), Line 6 (Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli) and Line 8 (Wadala to General Post Office).
In the north, Metro 4 will be extended from Kasarvadavli to Gaimukh and will be called Line 4A. In the south, it will be extended from Wadala to General Post Office in South Mumbai, and will be called Metro 11. The Mogharpada car shed will service all these metro lines.

SRA invites tenders for slum redevpt
Mumbai: The Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) which for several decades has merely been issuing Letters of Intent and NOCs to private builders for slum redevelopment schemes will now be appointing contractors to construct these buildings. The authority has invited bids for redevelopment of ten stalled slum redevelopment schemes at Andheri West, Antop Hill in Wadala, Goregaon, Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road, Vikhroli, Chembur and Deonar. The total slum area is 19 acres and 4740 slum households are to be rehabilitated. The ten slums are part of the 228 stalled slum schemes that have been distributed to various govt agencies such as MMRDA, BMC, MIDC, CIDCO and others. SRA officials said the schemes will be auctioned and the builder offering maximum PAP tenements from the sale component will be awarded the contract. "There is a regular PAP component in every slum rehab scheme. The density of tenements allowed is 650 per hectare. When the number of households is less than 650 then the balance is offered as PAPs. With PAPs from the sale component as well we shall be able to get more PAPs," said an official.

Trials begin on Metro 9 corridor from Dahisar to Mira-Bhayander
Trial runs on the 13.6km Metro 9 corridor between Dahisar and Mira-Bhayander, Thane district's first Metro corridor, began on Wednesday in the presence of CM Devendra Fadnavis. The CM, along with deputy CMs Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, also took a short ride during the trial. With completion of 96% of the civil work and 75% of system integration, MMRDA is targeting commissioning of a 4.4km stretch between Dahisar and Kashigaon by the year-end. It has now begun dynamic trials on the up and down lines, which will include load testing, signalling and traction checks, as well as emergency preparedness drills. "This line will play a key role in decongesting traffic on Western Express Highway. For Mira-Bhayander residents, it will be a game changer. We are committed to opening 50km of Metro routes this year, 62km next year, and another 60km the year after that," Fadnavis said. Once operational, the Metro 9 line will connect 10 stations, with Dahisar, Pandurang Wadi, Miragaon and Kashigaon likely to be opened first. The corridor will be integrated with Metro 2A (Dahisar-DN Nagar) and eventually provide seamless access to the airport via Metros 7 and 7A. It will also offer connectivity to the upcoming Metro 10 (Gaimukh-Shivaji Chowk) and Metro 13 (Vasai-Virar) corridors. Shinde said the extension towards Virar will ensure direct Metro connectivity for Thane, Palghar and Raigad districts. tnn
