Bhayanderpada Flyover Is Now Open For Public, Mumbai-Thane Travel Time To Reduce By 25 Mins

Last Updated:
The newly opened Bhayanderpada Flyover in Thane is a four-lane structure designed to significantly reduce travel time between Thane and Mumbai by 15–25 minutes.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde officially inaugurated the Bhayanderpada Flyover, a significant traffic project in Thane recently.
It is anticipated that the new four-lane flyover will cut the travel time between Thane and Mumbai by 15 to 25 minutes, with the goal of alleviating traffic on the congested Ghodbunder highway.
Shinde described the flyover as a significant milestone for the region, as per The Times of India. He stated that it will not only help everyday commuters in Thane but also improve communication between the northern suburbs of Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Bhiwandi, Vasai-Virar, Nashik and even Gujarat.
The Bhayanderpada Flyover is part of an innovative three-tier integrated traffic system:
'This is the first such model in the Thane region," Shinde said as quoted by The Free Press Journal. The event was also attended by Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) senior officials.
Direct Metro Access & Smarter Traffic Flow
Once the Metro is operational, commuters will be able to access stations directly from the flyover corridor. The design also ensures a smart separation of traffic:
Thane city traffic uses a slip road without signal stops
Outbound traffic uses the elevated flyover and underpass
'This flyover will accelerate traffic flow not just within Thane but across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), including access to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port," Shinde added.
Shinde added that other upgrades to the infrastructure were in progress. He reportedly said that the integration of the Metro 4 and 4A lines, which link Wadala, Kasarvadavli, and Gaimukh, with the Dahisar Metro line is imminent. Soon, land would be acquired for the connection in collaboration with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
The opening of the flyover will separate outbound traffic from Thane city traffic, enabling the former to use the elevated corridor and underpass while the latter can use the slip road and skip the signal. This will not only reduce congestion and fuel consumption but will also significantly increase travel efficiency.
'The flyover will not only increase traffic speed but also stimulate economic and industrial movement for the Mumbai metropolitan region (MMR)," Sanjay Mukherjee, MMRDA commissioner, told TOI.

Beyond The Cut

Times of India's Edit Page team comprises senior journalists with wide-ranging interests who debate and opine on the news and issues of the day. RBI can't do anything about sluggish incomes RBI's generous 50bps rate cut cheered markets on Friday, and should ease pressure of EMIs on borrowers soon. But a bigger test lies ahead – will it spur demand, and growth? Although Q4 data for fiscal 2025 was encouraging, its 7.4% growth was mostly powered by govt-led construction. Manufacturing growth remained sluggish, which is a dampener for the central bank's 'growth aspiration' of 7-8%. RBI has already set its growth expectation for the current fiscal at a modest 6.5%. For India to grow in the target range, private consumption – which accounts for close to 60% of GDP – must shift gears, and the three rate cuts this year – altogether 100bps – will make borrowing significantly cheaper. RBI and govt will hope this stimulates demand for housing and automobiles, key industries that employ millions and have significant multiplier effects. While inflation has finally cooled to a comfortable level, creating room for rate cuts, some experts have diagnosed sluggish demand and slowing price rise as a sign of weak incomes. Post-Covid, the housing and automobile markets became premiumised. Small hatchbacks, once the base of the car market, are now a tiny segment. Likewise, smaller apartments fell off builders' plans. Essentially, mid-income earners got priced out. Cheaper credit could change that, and if private demand booms, so will private capex. That's the hope. But if these rate cuts don't translate into growth, govt will seriously need to look at the problem of income stagnation. RBI has already changed its policy stance from accommodative to neutral, signalling a reluctance to make more cuts this year.
