Specialist education workers strike nationwide over pay talks

The two-hour strike was co-ordinated by two unions – the Public Service Association (PSA) and NZEI Te Riu Roa – representing different groups of ,inistry staff. Although bargaining separately, both unions say their members are united in frustration over inadequate pay offers and deteriorating working conditions.

The PSA, representing around 1500 members, includes staff working on national education programmes such as reform initiatives and emergency response.
Their concerns centre on the ministry's attempt to remove flexible working provisions from their collective agreement and what they describe as a 'miserly' pay offer that fails to keep pace with the cost of living.
NZEI Te Riu Roa represents about 800 field staff and service managers, including speech language therapists, early intervention teachers, psychologists, and advisers on deaf children.
These workers say they are stretched thin, with children waiting too long for support due to chronic understaffing and excessive overtime.
NZEI member Justine Blankenstein said the strike was a last resort.
'We're very sad that it's come to this, and we feel forced into it. Children are sitting on waiting lists for too long, staffing is inadequate, and we're doing too much overtime,' she said.
'We tried to negotiate our collective agreements, but the offer didn't address our issues – there was no new money for most of us.'
She also pointed to the May Budget announcement, which allocated funding to some areas of learning support.
'NZEI has calculated that the Government would need to invest $2.5 billion over five years to fix the long-standing issues. The Budget delivered some changes, but it was done by cutting other specialist staff, like resource teachers for literacy and Māori,' Blankenstein said.
From Wellington, PSA national secretary Fleur Fitzsimons said, 'The ministry is threatening flexible working arrangements by removing explicit commitments in the collective to allow members to work in a way which suits their family circumstances. This is the thin end of the wedge, reflecting this Government's hostility to what are modern workplace practices around the world.'

A letter distributed to parents ahead of the strike said the action was not taken lightly.
'We are between a rock and a hard place – trying to give tamariki the professional support they need while working under conditions that don't reflect the value of our roles,' the letter read.
'To fix this, we need fair working terms and conditions. This will help attract and retain great people to work with children.'
The letter also noted that many families may never need to access specialist support but for those who do, the services are vital.
'Tamariki who need additional support and their whānau are at the centre of everything we do.'
Both unions are urging the ministry to return to the bargaining table with better offers.
The Ministry of Education has said mediation with NZEI was scheduled for July 31 and August 1, and discussions were continuing with the PSA.
'While we are disappointed that NZEI and PSA have chosen to proceed with industrial action despite initial offers, we remain committed to progressing collective agreements in good faith with the unions.'

It signals that geothermal energy is no longer the quiet achiever in our energy system – the revived focus on its potential recognises that geothermal can be central to our national vision for a sustainable, resilient, and economically empowered future. We have worked in the geothermal sector with engineers, scientists, Māori trusts, and industry leaders for decades, here and globally, and it's clear his strategy is welcomed with enthusiasm and optimism. The direction is right. The language is ambitious. And the need is urgent. At the Geothermal Institute at the University of Auckland, we see this as more than a policy milestone – it's a long-awaited catalyst for transformational change. Hearing Ministers Shane Jones, Louise Upston and Shane Reti tell it, educating our young people and providing compelling career opportunities in geothermal needs to be at the heart of it. The importance of signals One of the most powerful aspects of the strategy is what it signals: that geothermal matters. That it has a future that can rival its storied past. That government sees the long-term opportunity and is willing to put its weight behind it. That's no small thing. As any developer or technology innovator will tell you, long-term certainty is the foundation of long-term investment. This strategy builds on tangible commitments already made – particularly in the Government's investment to accelerate research-backed supercritical geothermal technology development. This technology aims to harness extremely high-temperature fluids from deep underground to generate renewable energy more efficiently than conventional geothermal technology. That backing will keep New Zealand at the forefront of technology to tap ultra-hot geothermal fluids to produce radically more energy per well. This is complex science and engineering with high stakes and high rewards. If we get this right, we not only unlock more clean energy, but also more industrial process heat, more energy-dense sites, and more export opportunities for our solidified globally leading expertise. The ripple effects for regional economic development are significant: the creation of highly skilled, highly paid jobs in engineering, geoscience, subsurface modelling, advanced manufacturing and programme and environmental management in regions including Taupō, Kawerau and Rotorua, from Northland to the Central Volcanic Plateau. The students at the Geothermal Institute will be the first to tell you: these are real jobs that future-proof careers and bolster local economies. From field to frontier – the role of innovation, research and education Geothermal is a mature sector, but it's also a frontier sector. What struck me at the New Zealand Geothermal Week in Taupō this year wasn't just the technical excellence on display, but the dynamism. I had conversations with rangatahi curious about career pathways, with iwi-led developers eyeing up direct heat projects, with engineering consultants pitching AI-assisted reservoir models, and with international visitors in awe of the collaborative NZ Inc spirit in the room. Future skills were a strong emerging theme throughout, where the message was loud and clear: the sector is hungry for talent, and young people are hungry for purpose. We need to meet them in the middle – with curriculum pathways, internship pipelines, scholarships targeting local communities and a long-term commitment to Stem education throughout the education value chain. But building a globally competitive innovation pipeline requires sustained support. Training world-class geoscientists and engineers doesn't happen overnight. It needs the right investment and long-term partnerships. And to meet the Government's ambition to double geothermal energy use by 2040 will require scaling up education and training. That's why the strategy's success will ultimately rest not only on the high-level vision of geothermal growth, but also what sits behind it to fuel that growth. Reinforcing New Zealand's global leadership New Zealand already enjoys a stellar reputation in geothermal internationally. Our engineers and consultants are in demand in Southeast Asia, East Africa, North America, Latin America, the Pacific, Europe and beyond. Our training programmes and postgraduate education programmes have produced alumni who now lead geothermal policy development, regulation, production and scientific research on every continent. This strategy, if paired with smart investment and coordinated delivery, could elevate that leadership to the next level. We could be the first country to commercialise supercritical geothermal knowhow. We could be the global centre for geothermal workforce training, standards and certification. We could supercharge the export of integrated geothermal solutions, from power plant designs and drilling capability to stakeholder partnering frameworks, carbon capture innovations, critical minerals extraction, cutting-edge digital modelling and real-time assessment tools, and more. This is the soft power of geothermal – and it's rooted in decades of practical excellence, technical ingenuity, and manaakitanga. A call to action The Government's draft Geothermal Strategy establishes a clear framework for the growth of geothermal. At the launch this week, ministers set a challenge for our geothermal community to turn it into a bold, coherent vision for the future. The geothermal sector is ready – meeting challenges is what we do.

Jackson accuses govt of rigging next election

The claim - made during Parliament's general debate today - goes further than Labour's official position which has been that electoral changes would make it harder to vote. Jackson also used his speech to criticise Deputy Prime Minister David Seymour as the "biggest dropkick of all" following Seymour's use of the term to disparage late enrollers. "I don't know what's more offensive," Jackson told MPs. "The gerrymandering of our voting rules to rig the election, or the deputy prime minister referring to 600,000 people as dropkicks." Seymour last week told reporters he was "sick of dropkicks that can't get themselves organised to follow the law". More than 600,000 people enrolled or updated their enrolment details after writ day in 2023, including 110,000 on election day itself. In a fiery speech today, Jackson poured contempt on the "disgraceful, rotten, useless government", accusing it of actively suppressing the vote and "vandalising democratic participation". He pointed to official advice which noted that young people, Māori, Pasifika and Asian communities would be disproportionately affected by the changes. "It's racist disenfranchisement," Jackson said. "It's a breach of democracy... this government risks being accused of rigging the next election." Jackson commended Attorney-General Judith Collins as "one of the most principled National Party members" for standing up to her "weak and useless leader" by warning that the voting changes breached human rights. "She's had the courage to call these voter suppression powers what they are: discriminatory." Jackson concluded his speech by taking at aim at Seymour, calling on him to apologise for his "disgraceful" description of some voters as dropkicks. "He's the most dangerous politician of the last generation... not only a disgrace as the deputy prime minister, but surely the biggest dropkick of all." Ministers brush off Jackson comments Speaking to RNZ, Seymour laughed off Jackson's description of him as a dropkick: "To be honest, I was always an open side flanker. Didn't really do a big drop kick, although, on a good day, I could nail one from just outside the 22." Seymour said Jackson's claims were "wrong and insane" but he could not help but like the man because "you know he doesn't mean it". "He's more a figure of fun for me," Seymour said. "Although I do worry a little bit about - you know - a man of his age - the old ticker can give out if he hyperventilates too much at work in the House." In a statement to RNZ, a spokesperson for Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith said Jackson was prone to "hyperbole and mangling of the facts". "People are not being disenfranchised, they are merely being required to enrol," the spokesperson said. The government's legislation banning same-day voter enrolment passed its first reading in Parliament on Tuesday and will now be considered by select committee. During the debate, Goldsmith told MPs the change was required because the increasing number of special votes was delaying the final vote count. "The final vote count used to take two weeks. Last election, it took three," Goldsmith said. "The advice I received is that if we leave things as they are, it could well take even longer in future elections." Goldsmith flatly rejected the claim that people were being disenfranchised, saying the 110,000 people who updated their details on election day in 2023 only did so because they had been told they could. "The message will be different this election. People will be told they need to be enrolled well before voting starts. It's not that hard, and people are capable of doing these things." Justice officials, however, recommended against the move and warned it could result in lower turnout and reduce confidence in the electoral system. "Its impact on reducing special votes is uncertain, while its impact on democratic participation could be significant," officials said. The move has also been criticised by the Chief Human Rights Commissioner and electoral law experts Andrew Geddis and Graeme Edgeler. Since 2019, voters have been able to turn up to the booth at any time during the advance voting period and enrol at the same time, as well as on election day, with their vote being counted as a special vote.
