Emmerdale fans 'fume to Ofcom' in shock over 'disgraceful' storyline

Daily Mirror3 days ago
Emmerdale viewers were so shocked by violent Emmerdale scenes that they felt the need to reach out to broadcasting regulator Ofcom after a fan favourite was beaten up
An Emmerdale fan has 'fired off a complaint' to Ofcom after seeing disturbing scenes.

Viewers tuned into ITV's Yorkshire-based soap as usual on Tuesday night and one of them was so impassioned by a certain moment in the half-hour instalment that they felt the need to get in touch with the broadcast regulator. It all happened when Vinny Dingle (Bradley Johnson), confused about his sexuality, met Mike (Macaulay Cooper) on a dating website.

Vinny, already tortured after developing feelings for his friend Kammy Hadiq (Shebz Miah) whilst being engaged to Gabby Thomas (Rosie Bentham), invited the man over after he thought they had connected over sharing a problem in common, and it comes as a confrontation saw Mike accuse Vinny of inviting him over just to sleep with him. But as it turned out, Mike was only after money and savagely beat Vinny before walking off with his and Gabby's wedding rings.

As Vinny lay on the floor, he realised that he had disclosed a whole host of sensitive information to this man about his inner turmoil. But fans were so shocked by the violence portrayed, and one was so 'disgusted' that they decide to take action, writing on X afterwards: "I've fired off a complaint to Ofcom- disgusted with how what used to be a family show has morphed into something that seems to be trying to to show as much violence and depravity as it can squeeze into each programme. 7.30 is far too early to show this sort of muck."
The angry viewer was not the only one to take umbrage with the upsetting scenes, as another wrote: "This storyline is disgusting, Vinny reaches out to a support group and gets a homophobe and blackmailer, what sort of message is that sending to anyone questioning their own sexuality and wanting to seek out help." Another said: "This storyline is disgusting, Vinny reaches out to a support group and gets a homophobe and blackmailer, what sort of message is that sending to anyone questioning their own sexuality and wanting to seek out help."

A further fan slammed the entire storyline as they suggested that the bosses of the soap enlist a Hollywood director to helm all the action that takes place in the fictional Yorkshire village. They said: "Appalling, disgusting storyline. Why don't you just get Tarrantino or Guy Ritchie to Direct. Vinny was a lovely character."
One viewer also agreed the scenes were 'shocking', and one suggested: "The 9pm watershed is just a gimmick. Before then, nothing with strong language is allowed to be broadcast. But seriously violent and disturbing scenes such as this are perfectly fine. I can only assume that violence is socially more acceptable than swearing. Disgraceful."

But other social media users were quick to play down all the controversy, and reminded them that that tuning in was a completely free choice to begin with. They said: "You know that if people don't like what they're watching, then turn your tv over, miss the episode, these things happen in real life, pity it was Vinny getting pulverised, it should have been John, just saying. Great camaraderie with Manpreet and Ruby."

Other viewers didn't appear to take issue with the way the beating was portrayed, and had got invested in the twists and turns of the plot. One said: "I knew there was something fishy about that bloke when Vinny first met him. But I wish # emmerdale hadn't got as dark as this. I much prefer the old."
Another added: "Felt sorry for poor Vinny in Emmerdale I knew that lad was dodgy! No need for such violence, really laying into him! This happened before and not just with his dad!"

Emmerdale star Michael Parr makes a huge lifestyle change ahead of welcoming his first child

Michael Parr has embraced a 'huge lifestyle change' as he prepares to welcome his first child. The Emmerdale star, best known for portraying Ross Barton in the ITV soap, revealed in May that he and his girlfriend, Isabelle Du Plessis, are expanding their family. And as he gears up for the biggest role of his life, he has admitted that settling down was not something that was always on the cards for him. In a new interview with the Mirror, Michael, 38, said: 'I was 26 when I first got the job and before it used to be about the nightclubs and going out for pints after work. 'Now I'm entering dad mode. I like my tea and early nights.' Revealing his reaction to the pregnancy news, he added: 'Once Izzy told me, my whole outlook on life changed, It's made me realise what's actually important to me.' Back in May, Mike's girlfriend took to Instagram to confirm they are set to become parents in a sweet post. She shared a series of heartwarming photographs of her and Mike - who is best known for playing Ross Barton - cuddling up to one another. Isabelle showed off her growing baby bump in a figure-hugging red floral gown, which she styled with white sandals. Mike cut a smart figure in a white shirt and black trousers as he posed with his hand placed on Isabelle's stomach. The couple flashed huge smiles as they appeared thrilled to be sharing the news that they are growing their family. They did not confirm the due date, simply teasing that their baby is due 'soon', nor have they yet announced their first child's gender. In a caption, Isabelle simply gushed: 'In our Mum & Dad Era.' Mike revealed in October that he was in a new relationship but kept the identity of his girlfriend a secret. He told The Mirror at the time: 'I'm in a very happy relationship. She's amazing and has been very supportive.' He previously dated his co-star Isabelle Hodgins - who plays Victoria Sugden on the soap - but the pair parted ways back in 2019. Mike played the role of villain Ross Barton on Emmerdale from 2013 until 2018, and he has recently reprised his role. After his debut on the show, he quickly became a fan favourite for his portrayal of the complex-but-charismatic Ross. The actor said he was 'bored' just two months after his departure in 2018 due to being out of work, and reappeared on screen at the end of 2024. Ross was known for his tumultuous relationships with Donna Windsor and Debbie Dingle, and his departure followed a horrific acid attack which left him battling depression. Of his return, Michael said: 'I'm over the moon to be returning to Emmerdale. Ross is a character I'm extremely fond of and I'm excited to explore what he's been up to over the past five years. 'After seeing the scripts, I can't wait for the audience to see what's in store. One thing I can say is Ross's return will no doubt create fireworks.'

The Emmerdale moment Robert and Aaron finally reunite in new spoiler video

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video This is the Emmerdale moment where Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) and Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) finally reunite. Robert's shock reappearance in the village on the day of Aaron and John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth)'s wedding has caused massive drama. From the beginning it was clear that there was a vast amount of unfinished business between him and Aaron, with the two kissing before Aaron ultimately decided to make a commitment to John by marrying him. Since then Robert has become deeply suspicious about his half-brother John and his role in the death of Nate Robinson (Jurell Carter). Viewers know that Robert is very close to uncovering the entire truth – and that this puts him in terrible danger. But in the short term, it's the relationship between Aaron and Robert that takes centre stage once again in upcoming episodes. Ryan Hawley told us that John's scheming leads to Robert being in a very dark place. 'John sets up a situation where Robert's left alone with his nephew Harry,' he revealed. 'John encourages him to be disruptive and to kind of trigger Robert, which he does. Robert loses his temper, and John walks in on it and sees it. He uses it as a thing to gaslight Robert, to make it look like he's he's been aggressive. John adds all that together, and he uses it to paint the picture to basically get rid of Robert.' With John goading Robert that he's lost Aaron and now he'll lose Victoria (Isabel Hodgins) too, Robert goes on a destructive rampage. 'He loses it, just completely has a breakdown and smashes everything in his room,' Ryan said. 'And then Aaron comes in and stops him. He just breaks down in Aaron's arms. And then we cut to the scene downstairs, when they're talking to each other. 'And Robert says it's time for him to go. He needs to move on, he shouldn't have come back. But then Aaron convinces him not to and to stay, and he's been fighting feelings the whole time as well. And we get our first Aaron and Robert love scene.' It's the moment that Robron fans have been waiting for ever since Robert's return, and you can watch it now with our new video clip above. But Ryan explained that, at this point, the pair are not viewing this as anything more permanent. 'It's kind of a take it as it is, just this moment, kind of thing,' he told us. 'They even say to each other, we don't want to think about any of that now, the circumstances that we've got is complicated. It is what it is right now, and then we'll see from there. 'And it kind of leads into the next phase of the story. They just take it for what it is, and it's more kind of a kicking-off point or starting point for the next storyline.' The 'next storyline' he's referring to obviously involves John Sugden, and the first thing that happens is that Aaron and John start making plans to leave the village. Ryan summed up how Robert is feeling in that moment. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? The latest gossip from Emmerdale? Robert came back to the village for Aaron, really, in truth. So yeah, he'd be devastated. It's his reason to come back and to exist.' More Trending This storyline is set to run well into next year and Ryan told us he was 'genuinely excited' for the year ahead. 'I think the show's in a great place at the moment. I think the next year, the story arc that I've been told about, I'm really excited about,' he said. He's also looking forward to the history-making upcoming crossover between Emmerdale and Coronation Street. Aaron Dingle and ex-husband Robert Sugden finally confess their true feelings in an upcoming episode, and one thing leads to another. ‌ With a concerned Aaron desperate to help Robert amid his spiralling mental health, he tells his soulmate (let's face it) that he "just needs to get him better". As an emotional Robert shares his fears that he has no one and nothing left, thoughts put in his mind by his evil brother John Sugden, Aaron's confused as to why Robert would think he "didn't want to know". ‌ It's then that he admits how he really feels and why he's been so distant, amid his marriage to John. Aaron soon confesses what's really been going on, and how he has deliberately pushed Robert away to avoid temptation. He says: "We both know what will happen if we get too close." As Robert asks if they are both "fighting feelings", Aaron says: "I didn't say that. Aaron adds: "She loves you. She wants to help you, I wanna help you. Even John does and he knows all about PTSD from the army." As Robert tries to change the topic he makes a jibe about Aaron's cooking, sending them on a brief trip down memory lane. But Robert's soon left sad again, telling Aaron: "Thanks for being here.
