Forget AL East crown, Blue Jays taking aim at top of AL or MLB
And here's where what happens off of the field over the next 10 days matters in a large way. With a fired-up fan base, a united clubhouse and a team that seems to be relishing the intangibles of what a winning team feels like, it's on general manager Ross Atkins to enhance what's happening in a meaningful way.
Article content
As obvious as the comparisons to 2015 are, it's impossible not to draw parallels to a decade ago. The players feel it. The fans feel it. And a renovated Rogers Centre feels like the place to be in the peak of a Toronto summer.
Article content
Which brings us back to the present. The week ahead certainly serves up a stout test on a couple of fronts for the Jays. First, you can bet the Yankees won't roll over like they did earlier in the month when they were swept away in the four-game series that allowed the Jays to surge to the division lead.

Following that, there's a four-gamer at the other end of the 401 when the Jays meet the Tigers in perhaps the most important showdown against their closest geographical rival in decades. Over the seven games, the Jays will face the Yankees top two starters — Rodon on Monday and Max Fried on Wednesday. And in the Motor City, they'll take on ace of aces, the Tigers Tarik Skubal on the weekend.

As for the Yankees, when they previously arrived in Toronto on June 30, they held a three-game lead over the Jays before the four losses — including a resounding Canada Day celebration — caused them to surrender top spot.
Article content
Since then, the Jays have been on an historic run in terms of franchise accomplishments. There was a 10-game winning streak, matching the club mark. There have been the 10 consecutive wins at the dome, equalling another franchise record and what a way to eclipse it with a fifth consecutive Toronto win over their division rival.
Article content
The Jays are well aware of what's at stake — it's impossible not to be. They can read and digest the standings like you and I, they can feel the energy at the Rogers Centre, which is full or close to it every day and night now.
Article content
Presumably, they're also well aware of what got them to this place (on pace for 95 wins) and that's a laser focus on the immediate task and to quickly flush the big win or loss the previous night.

Luis Gil lined up to make season debut Sunday for Yankees after latest Triple-A rehab outing
NEW YORK (AP) — Luis Gil is expected to make his season debut for the New York Yankees on Sunday at Miami after missing four months with a lat strain. The reigning AL Rookie of the Year struck out seven over 4 1/3 innings Tuesday for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Gil threw 50 of 75 pitches for strikes, allowing one run and three hits in his fourth minor league rehabilitation start. Injured in spring training, the right-hander is lined up to return this weekend against the Marlins after pitching 14 1/3 innings in the minors. 'I think that's the plan right now,' manager Aaron Boone said before the Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-5 on Tuesday night. Gil began facing hitters on June 21, when he threw 20 pitches of live batting practice at Yankee Stadium, and made his first rehab start July 13 for Double-A Somerset. 'I think for the most part, get through it hopefully successfully, and strike-throwing and carrying his stuff throughout the outing,' Boone said. 'You want to see those things, but we're also mindful of it that in a lot of ways it's spring training for him and building up. 'So there's definitely that next level of competitive juices and adrenaline that'll be flowing once he gets back up here.' Gil stopped a bullpen session on Feb. 28 because of tightness in his pitching shoulder. He went to New York for a second MRI that revealed a high-grade lat strain on March 3. He was shut down from throwing for at least six weeks after receiving the original diagnosis, and at the time the Yankees said he would not return until June at the earliest. On April 16, the Yankees said Gil's throwing program would be delayed for about 10 days. The 27-year-old Gil went 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA in 29 starts for the AL East champions last year, striking out 171 and walking a major league-high 77 in 151 2/3 innings. Acquired from the Minnesota Twins in a 2018 trade, Gil made a successful return from Tommy John surgery and threw eight more innings in a pair of postseason starts as the Yankees reached the World Series for the first time since 2009. ___ AP MLB:

Blue Jays make it close in Seranthony Dominguez's debut, but drop their fourth in a row
From opponent to teammate, Seranthony Dominguez made his Blue Jays debut in the seventh inning of a 2-2 tilt in Baltimore on Tuesday night, mere hours after being traded by the Orioles between games of their scheduled doubleheader. Article content Dominguez, a hard-throwing right-hander, showed both his good and bad sides in his high-leverage inning, but ultimately held the O's scoreless. Jeff Hoffman followed him and wasn't so fortunate — giving up back-to-back doubles in the eighth as the Orioles won 3-2 to sweep the doubleheader — following a 16-4 rout in the afternoon opener — and hand the Jays their fourth loss in a row. Article content Article content At least this game was close, which couldn't be said of the previous three in which the Jays were outscored 37-12. Article content Dominguez did his part under what had to be awkward circumstances for the 30-year-old, whose strikeout and walk percentages are both high. Article content He struck out the first batter he faced, pinch-hitter Colton Cowser, after falling behind 2-0, and got out of the inning by fanning Jackson Holliday. Article content In between, he hit Dylan Carlson with a pitch. But after Carlson stole second, Dominguez stepped off the mound and got Carlson in a rundown. Article content It was quite the debut and the kind of appearance the Jays knew what they were getting when they acquired Dominguez. Article content Offensively, the Jays out-hit the O's 8-7, but hit into three double plays — two of them inning-ending — in the seventh, eighth and ninth. Article content The following are three takeaways from the nightcap that shaved the Jays' hold on first-place in the AL East to four games with the Yankees beating the Tampa Bay Rays. Article content 1. All eyes on Lauer Article content A dizzying day that saw one veteran reliever (Chad Green) shown the door, while another crossed the field to join his new team via a trade, and Eric Lauer suddenly found himself in the brightest of spotlights. Article content A must-win would be a stretch, but the lefty needed to stabilize what was turning into an creaky situation for the Blue Jays. Article content A 10-pitch first inning certainly helped as he was handed a 1-0 lead. Lauer loaded the bases in the second but struck out Carlson to get out it, albeit having thrown 27 more pitches. Article content Lauer's curveball is a thing of beauty, and it was highlighted when he struck out Gunnar Henderson swinging to end the third inning. Article content The lefty wound up lasting five innings, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out four. More importantly, he'd done his job and kept his team in the game, tied 2-2. Article content The Orioles, meanwhile, started 27th-man callup Brandon Young who, truth be told, was a bit better than Lauer on this day, going six innings and allowing two runs while fanning six. Article content It was the kind of effort the Jays were hoping to get — but didn't — from their pitching callups in the early game as Easton Lucas and Lazaro Estrada combined to give up 10 runs over six innings.

Kyle Manzardo's second career 2-homer game powers Guardians to a win over Rockies
CLEVELAND (AP) — Kyle Manzardo had his second career two-homer game and drove in three runs, Brayan Rocchio hit a two-run triple, and the Cleveland Guardians rolled to a 10-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night. Manzardo hit a two-run shot off Rockies starter Tanner Gordon (2-3) in the third inning and a solo homer against Jimmy Herget in the sixth. His other two-homer game occurred last Sept. 1 against Pittsburgh. Gabriel Arias added a two-run single and José Ramírez and Bo Naylor scored two runs apiece for the Guardians, who are 3 1/2 games out of the final American League wild-card spot with Thursday's trade deadline looming. Logan Allen (7-9) worked seven innings and allowed two runs on homers by Jordan Beck and Michael Toglia. The left-hander threw a career-high 113 pitches and matched his longest outing, winning for the second time in his last seven decisions. TIGERS 12, DIAMONDBACKS 2 DETROIT (AP) — Riley Greene hit one of Detroit's three homers in a six-run fifth inning, and the Tigers went on to beat Arizona. Greene had three hits, scored three times and drove in three runs. Wenceel Pérez had three hits, stole two bases and scored four times. The Tigers have won three straight after losing 12 of 13. Arizona has lost six of seven. The game was tied at 2 before the Tigers scored nine runs in the fifth and sixth innings. After Brandon Pfaadt (10-7) retired the leadoff hitter in the fifth, Gleyber Torres put the Tigers ahead 3-2 with a homer to right. Kerry Carpenter singled and Greene hit his 26th homer to make it 5-2. YANKEES 7, RAYS 5 NEW YORK (AP) — Cody Bellinger hit a three-run homer, Anthony Volpe also went deep and New York erased an early deficit a victory over Tampa. Max Fried recovered from a rough start and threw a career-high 111 pitches in 6 2/3 innings. Volpe delivered a tiebreaking single in the fourth and launched a 452-foot homer to center field in the eighth, the longest of his career. He also committed two throwing errors at shortstop, the second one on a play that should have ended the game. That gave Tampa Bay another chance before Devin Williams whiffed All-Star Jonathan Aranda with runners at second and third for the final out. New York pulled within four games of first-place Toronto in the AL East after falling 6 1/2 back last weekend. Fried (12-4) allowed four runs — two earned — and four hits while surpassing his previous career high of 110 pitches for Atlanta at Philadelphia in September 2022. DODGERS 5, REDS 4 CINCINNATI (AP) — Will Smith had an RBI double in the ninth inning as Los Angeles rallied for a over Cincinnati. Shohei Ohtani struck out four times in a major league game for the sixth time, but it was the first time it happened in his first four at-bats. The reigning NL MVP also had a nine-game hitting streak snapped. The Dodgers got three hits from Freddie Freeman, including a game-tying RBI single in the seventh inning, and Tommy Edman had a two-run homer in the first inning. Former Cincinnati closer Alexis Díaz (1-0), who was dealt to the Dodgers on May 29, pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Jake Fraley and Noelvi Marte homered for the Reds, who have dropped their last two games after winning four straight. Fraley had a two-run shot to right in the fourth inning tie it at 2-all and Marte followed two batters later with a drive to right to give Cincinnati the lead. Michael Conforto drew a walk off Emilio Pagán (2-3) to lead off the ninth. James Outman came on as a pinch-runner and scored when Smith lined a double off the left-field wall with two outs. Alex Vesia retired the Reds in order in the ninth for his fourth save. PHILLIES 6, WHITE SOX 3 CHICAGO (AP) — Kyle Schwarber hit a two-run homer, Jesús Luzardo pitched seven sparkling innings and Philadelphia beat Chicago. Brandon Marsh also hit a two-run drive for Philadelphia, which bounced back nicely after dropping the series opener on Monday night. Schwarber, Marsh and Trea Turner each had two hits. Luzardo (9-5) allowed two hits, struck out four and walked one. The White Sox scored three times in the ninth against Daniel Robert. Colson Montgomery had a run-scoring groundout, and Lenyn Sosa connected for a two-run homer. BALTIMORE (AP) — Adley Rutschman doubled home the tiebreaking run in the bottom of the eighth inning, and Baltimore completed a doubleheader sweep of Toronto. With Gunnar Henderson on second and one out, Rutschman lifted a drive to right off Jeff Hoffman (6-4) that Nathan Lukes tried to catch against the big wall in right field at Camden Yards. Lukes reached for the ball and initially seemed unsure of where it ended up, only to find it down at his feet. Andrew Kittredge (2-2) won in relief, and Corbin Martin worked out of a ninth-inning jam for his first career save. The last-place Orioles have dealt away several relievers recently — including Seranthony Domínguez, who was traded to Toronto between games of this doubleheader and pitched a scoreless seventh in the nightcap. The Blue Jays had men on second and third against Martin with one out, but Lukes struck out looking and Bo Bichette went down swinging. Baltimore won the opener 16-4.
