As obvious as the comparisons to 2015 are, it's impossible not to draw parallels to a decade ago. The players feel it. The fans feel it. And a renovated Rogers Centre feels like the place to be in the peak of a Toronto summer.

Which brings us back to the present. The week ahead certainly serves up a stout test on a couple of fronts for the Jays. First, you can bet the Yankees won't roll over like they did earlier in the month when they were swept away in the four-game series that allowed the Jays to surge to the division lead.

Following that, there's a four-gamer at the other end of the 401 when the Jays meet the Tigers in perhaps the most important showdown against their closest geographical rival in decades. Over the seven games, the Jays will face the Yankees top two starters — Rodon on Monday and Max Fried on Wednesday. And in the Motor City, they'll take on ace of aces, the Tigers Tarik Skubal on the weekend.

As for the Yankees, when they previously arrived in Toronto on June 30, they held a three-game lead over the Jays before the four losses — including a resounding Canada Day celebration — caused them to surrender top spot.

Since then, the Jays have been on an historic run in terms of franchise accomplishments. There was a 10-game winning streak, matching the club mark. There have been the 10 consecutive wins at the dome, equalling another franchise record and what a way to eclipse it with a fifth consecutive Toronto win over their division rival.

The Jays are well aware of what's at stake — it's impossible not to be. They can read and digest the standings like you and I, they can feel the energy at the Rogers Centre, which is full or close to it every day and night now.

Presumably, they're also well aware of what got them to this place (on pace for 95 wins) and that's a laser focus on the immediate task and to quickly flush the big win or loss the previous night.

Luis Gil lined up to make season debut Sunday for Yankees after latest Triple-A rehab outing
NEW YORK (AP) — Luis Gil is expected to make his season debut for the New York Yankees on Sunday at Miami after missing four months with a lat strain. The reigning AL Rookie of the Year struck out seven over 4 1/3 innings Tuesday for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Gil threw 50 of 75 pitches for strikes, allowing one run and three hits in his fourth minor league rehabilitation start. Injured in spring training, the right-hander is lined up to return this weekend against the Marlins after pitching 14 1/3 innings in the minors. 'I think that's the plan right now,' manager Aaron Boone said before the Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-5 on Tuesday night. Gil began facing hitters on June 21, when he threw 20 pitches of live batting practice at Yankee Stadium, and made his first rehab start July 13 for Double-A Somerset. 'I think for the most part, get through it hopefully successfully, and strike-throwing and carrying his stuff throughout the outing,' Boone said. 'You want to see those things, but we're also mindful of it that in a lot of ways it's spring training for him and building up. 'So there's definitely that next level of competitive juices and adrenaline that'll be flowing once he gets back up here.' Gil stopped a bullpen session on Feb. 28 because of tightness in his pitching shoulder. He went to New York for a second MRI that revealed a high-grade lat strain on March 3. He was shut down from throwing for at least six weeks after receiving the original diagnosis, and at the time the Yankees said he would not return until June at the earliest. On April 16, the Yankees said Gil's throwing program would be delayed for about 10 days. The 27-year-old Gil went 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA in 29 starts for the AL East champions last year, striking out 171 and walking a major league-high 77 in 151 2/3 innings. From opponent to teammate, Seranthony Dominguez made his Blue Jays debut in the seventh inning of a 2-2 tilt in Baltimore on Tuesday night, mere hours after being traded by the Orioles between games of their scheduled doubleheader. Article content Dominguez, a hard-throwing right-hander, showed both his good and bad sides in his high-leverage inning, but ultimately held the O's scoreless. Jeff Hoffman followed him and wasn't so fortunate — giving up back-to-back doubles in the eighth as the Orioles won 3-2 to sweep the doubleheader — following a 16-4 rout in the afternoon opener — and hand the Jays their fourth loss in a row. Article content Dominguez did his part under what had to be awkward circumstances for the 30-year-old, whose strikeout and walk percentages are both high. Kyle Manzardo's second career 2-homer game powers Guardians to a win over Rockies
CLEVELAND (AP) — Kyle Manzardo had his second career two-homer game and drove in three runs, Brayan Rocchio hit a two-run triple, and the Cleveland Guardians rolled to a 10-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night. Manzardo hit a two-run shot off Rockies starter Tanner Gordon (2-3) in the third inning and a solo homer against Jimmy Herget in the sixth. His other two-homer game occurred last Sept. 1 against Pittsburgh. Gabriel Arias added a two-run single and José Ramírez and Bo Naylor scored two runs apiece for the Guardians, who are 3 1/2 games out of the final American League wild-card spot with Thursday's trade deadline looming. The left-hander threw a career-high 113 pitches and matched his longest outing, winning for the second time in his last seven decisions. YANKEES 7, RAYS 5 NEW YORK (AP) — Cody Bellinger hit a three-run homer, Anthony Volpe also went deep and New York erased an early deficit a victory over Tampa. Max Fried recovered from a rough start and threw a career-high 111 pitches in 6 2/3 innings. Volpe delivered a tiebreaking single in the fourth and launched a 452-foot homer to center field in the eighth, the longest of his career. He also committed two throwing errors at shortstop, the second one on a play that should have ended the game. That gave Tampa Bay another chance before Devin Williams whiffed All-Star Jonathan Aranda with runners at second and third for the final out. New York pulled within four games of first-place Toronto in the AL East after falling 6 1/2 back last weekend.
