This fake tan is the best I've ever tried – and it doesn't stain clothes or sheets

A relatively new name on the fake tanning scene, Bare By Vogue launched in 2019 courtesy of its namesake founder, presenter and podcaster, Vogue Williams. In the years since, its hydration-packed formulas have won the brand a loyal following – myself included.
Bare By Vogue's foams, mists and instant tan bottles all prioritise skin-loving ingredients such as oatmeal, chamomile, pomegranate, grapefruit and goji berry. This shows in the end results, when skin is not only left looking bronzed, but also smoothed, plumped and firmed.
While the brand has a range of different formulas to choose from, its the clear water that has become my ride-or-die – and I've tried hundreds in the decade since I first starting fake tanning. In fact, it secured the number one spot in my tried and tested round-up of the best fake tans for 2025. Just like the rest of the brand's roster, the water-based tan is infused with nourishing ingredients that hydrates skin, rather than drying it out.
Unlike many popular bronzers on the market, Bare By Vogue's comes out clear – but don't fret, as application is a breeze. Trust me, even complete beginners at fake tanning can get beautifully bronzed results.
Having pressed it into the hands of various friends who now also swear by the foolproof formula, here's why you should pick up a bottle of the Bare By Vogue clear water for yourself. If you're looking to eek out the last few weeks of summer at home with a South of France glow, it's also currently on sale thanks to Boots.
How I tested
While I might look naturally tanned all-year-round (thank you, Bare by Vogue), for context, I am naturally pale with uneven texture owing to a bit of rosacea on my arms. Plus, my skin is prone to dryness (particularly on my elbows, arms and legs), so I look for skin-nourishing ingredients in fake tan formulas that won't dry out my skin further.
Ingredients: I always look for fake tan formulas made with nourishing and hydrating ingredients (think glycerin and aloe vera) to balance out the tanning actives that can dry skin out.
Application: Ahead of application, I always exfoliate my skin and scrub off any pre-existing fake tan to ensure a smooth base. I applied Bare by Vogue's clear water with a mitt (£6.30, Boots.com), using around two pumps for each area of my body. For the neck, hands and feet, I use a brush – my favourite is the Rose & Caramel one (£12, Amazon.co.uk) – to buff the product in.
Results: Ultimately, I want the best fake tan to yield natural-looking results. From the colour pay-off to how long the tan lasts, here's why Bare by Vogue's clear water deserves a spot in your fake-tan arsenal for summer and beyond.
Why you can trust IndyBest reviews
As senior shopping writer at The Independent, I've tested almost every fake tan there is, be it a gradual tan or a mousse. Besides using a fake tan as part of my weekly routine for more than a decade, I've investigated the best ways to apply fake tan and written several in-depth reviews of my favourite products, including those from St Tropez, Dove, Isle of Paradise and Self Glow. I've also consulted experts on the formulas they recommend for certain skin types, their top application tips, and how to help it fade- without streaks. I use formulas regularly throughout the year, so anything I recommend is worth a spot in your bathroom cabinet.

Daughter of INXS rock legend Kirk Pengilly hits back at nepo baby label: 'I didn't want to be in my dad's shadow'

She's the famous daughter of famed INXS rock legend Kirk Pengilly. But April Rose Pengilly insists that after forging her own successful career as a model and actress, she does not want to live in her dad's 'shadow'. April Rose, 37, who is set to marry fiancé Adam Paul in France this month, says that she did not even use her surname when she started modelling as a teen. 'I didn't want to be in [my dad's] shadow. I kept travelling around and starting over again – I worked in Japan, New York, London,' she told Stellar on Sunday. 'But eventually people figured it out. I'm glad I did it though, because I basically proved to myself that I could make it work.' The daughter of the INXS star and designer Karen Hutchinson, April Rose started modelling at 16 - and used the interview to address being labelled a ' nepo baby '. The well-known derogatory term applies to celebrity offspring who pursue a show business career, and who supposedly owe success to their famous family name. She continued: 'Anything written about me, they'd usually bring my father into it. I'd see comments, and any success I had, it was, "Oh, it's just because of her dad"...That does play on your mind.' Still, April Rose said she would use the Pengilly name even after she marries, even though she says her husband-to-be wants her to change it. 'I've had this name my whole life, so I do feel attached to it. It makes me feel close to my dad, that it's his name. My mum has a different surname; they were never married,' she said. 'They were together for 10 years. But it never bothered me that I had a different surname to her.' Elsewhere in the chat April Rose said she was very proud that it was INXS came in at number one in Triple J's Hottest 100 Aussie song poll for their hit Never Tear Us Apart. 'I think Australia definitely voted correctly, and it is well deserved,' she said. It comes after April Rose flaunted her enormous diamond engagement ring during an outing with her beau back earlier this year. The former Neighbours actress announced her engagement to Adam Paul in December 2023. 'BEST DAY OF THE YEAR,' the petite blonde captioned the share featuring pictures from her excursion to Sydney's Royal Easter Show back in April. The couple had been together for just under two years when Adam popped the question. Details of the upcoming nuptials have been scarce so far, with April Rose saying last month that clothes shopping had taken priority over wedding planning. 'Starting to look for my future groom's suit,' she captioned an Instagram post in March. 'Honestly, we're doing a lot more outfit shopping than wedding planning. Priorities innit.' April has forged a career for herself as an actress and television star with her father previously saying she didn't 'want to live off my coat-tails'. The star joined Neighbours in 2017, playing Chloe Brennan, and left the famed soap in 2023.

Freddie Mercury's 'secret' daughter speaks out for the first time ahead of publication of bombshell book

The 'secret daughter' of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury has made an emotional statement ahead of publication of a book about their relationship. In it, the woman, known only as B, says: 'I didn't want to share my Dad with the whole world. After his death, I had to learn to live with the attacks against him, the misrepresentations of him, and with the feeling that my Dad now belonged to everyone. I cried and mourned my Dad, while fans all around the world mourned Freddie. When you are 15 years old, it's not easy. 'I had to become an adult without him, and live all the structuring moments and events without his support. For 30 years I had to build my life and family without him and accept that he wouldn't be there to share the happy moments with us. For 30 years, while the rest of the world was reinterpreting Mercury's life, his music and all that he had been, I needed to have my Dad just for me and my family. How could I have spoken before?' B has now provided a statement after becoming aware that Freddie's ex and close friend Mary Austin is allegedly saying she did not know B existed. Mary, who inherited much of his fortune and avoids the public eye, is understood to have cast doubt on B's story in an interview with a Sunday newspaper. The book which tells her story, called Love, Freddie, comes out in September. B said: 'I am devastated by Mary Austin's alleged response. For 34 years, the truth of Freddie's life has been distorted, twisted and rewritten, but she said nothing - with the exception of her comment about the movie Bohemian Rhapsody, which she called "artistic license". Here, she has not yet read the book, yet she apparently makes this statement. I don't understand why.' The book tells the story of a child who was conceived accidentally during a fling with the wife of a close friend in 1976, a year after Bohemian Rhapsody became a hit. The revelation came as a huge shock to the singer's millions of fans, who have long loved and accepted him as a gay man. His last boyfriend, the late Jim Hutton, is one of a number of who have written books about their experiences with him. Freddie had a number of full relationships with women. These include Mary Austin, whom he met when she was 19 and he 23. The couple lived together and were engaged for a while before he came out as gay. They never had any children, although Mary went on to have two sons with another partner and remained close to Freddie for the rest of his life. A romance with another woman – the mother of his love-child – was however something Freddie kept a closely guarded secret. In the first chapter of the book, there is a handwritten letter from Freddie's daughter in which she says: 'Freddie Mercury was and is my father. We had a very close and loving relationship from the moment I was born and throughout the final 15 years of his life. 'He adored me and was devoted to me. The circumstances of my birth may seem, by most people's standards, unusual and even outrageous. That should come as no surprise. It never detracted from his commitment to love and look after me. He cherished me like a treasured possession.' Lesley-Ann Jones said: 'I am surprised by Mary Austin's response. As a journalist I approached her for interview countless times over many years, but she never once responded. In this book, however, there is only one voice: that of Freddie's daughter herself. The story is hers. The quotes are hers. Her source is the collection of 17 handwritten diaries that Freddie gave her three weeks before he died. In a lengthy statement, B outlined the reasons why she came to collaborate with Lesley-Ann. She said: 'In response to recent criticism, which I am sure will only increase with media coverage, the forthcoming documentary and the book's imminent publication, I want to say that it was my decision alone to contact Lesley-Ann Jones. The reasons and circumstances that led me to contact her, and why her, are explained in the book. I think it's also important that I say that I approve of the book. 'Some people are accusing her of having made the whole story up, and of taking advantage of me. I want to be very clear about this. It's not just about defending her, it's also about defending myself. 'I want to say that, after I had read the first draft of the book, the writer respected my request to remove certain passages that contained information I had revealed to her but which I subsequently decided I didn't want to be published. 'She always respected my requests, wanting me to be fully satisfied with the final version. At no time did she take advantage of me. I want the public to know that I couldn't find a more attentive, patient and caring writer, and that I personally approved the final, definitive version for publication. 'The past 34 years have been, for his fans, about the songs he didn't write, sing or record and the gigs he didn't perform. But for me - and I'm sure for his other close and loved ones too - these years have been about all the things we were not able to do together: discussions we couldn't have, questions we couldn't ask and answers we didn't get to give. They have been about confessions we couldn't confide, laughter we couldn't share, games we couldn't play. About the birthdays, Christmases, moments and time we never got to enjoy together.'
