Saquon Barkley's viral moment draws a rare Barry Sanders response

USA Today4 hours ago

Barry Sanders addresses Saquon Barkley's viral comments about early retirement.
There may be no better compliment that can be given to a professional athlete than knowing one's idols are also fans of theirs. Imagine suiting up for a Philadelphia Eagles game on Sunday and dominating. Imagine seeing a guy whose poster you once owned offering congratulations.
Saquon Barkley is a student of the game, one who appreciates its history. At some point, he studied the legends like Walter Payton and Jim Brown. Last season, while in pursuit of Eric Dickerson's single-season rushing record, he learned the Hall-of-Famer was a fan (even if he didn't want to see his record broken). Just this week, he learned of another, Barry Sanders.
Barry Sanders offers Saquon Barkley some advice on post-retirement theory
It wasn't necessarily the shot heard 'round the world or an internet breaker, but it was close. Saquon Barkley recently appeared on an episode of Green Light with Chris Long. Thoughts about early retirement were mentioned. As you can imagine, that caused quite a stir.
Eventually, he'd speak with the media and did his best to ease the minds of a concerned Eagles fan base. Long story short, despite stating his eventual announcement might come as a "surprise", it appears he has no intention of calling it a career soon.
An entire fan base wiped the sweat from its brow. Whew! That was close, but they've been watching his every move just in case. Enter Barry Sanders. Like Barkley, he sat for an interview of his own. As you might imagine, while speaking with CBS Sports' John Breech, the Barkley comments were revisited, and the 2004 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee offered some advice for the most recent entrant into the NFL's 2000-yard club.
"(Saquon Barkley) should stick around for a little while. As a fan, I'm enjoying watching him play. I still see him as still being very young. I'm excited with what he's been able to do in Philadelphia, and really, just his journey. He was written off by the Giants, and to see the kind of year he had last year, I know he still has a lot of great years left in him."
Raise those hands if you're hoping that Saquon is reading the same stuff we are. Barkley had previously mentioned Sanders' decision to retire unexpectedly while speaking with Chris Long.
"Sometimes, players feel that (way), and once they get into camp and into the season, they feel different. Philadelphia feels like a great place, a great home for him, so hopefully it's just sort of a temporary thing that he's experiencing, that he'll continue to enjoy the success there with that great team that they've assembled."
Barkley signed a three-year, $37.75 million deal with Philadelphia on March 13, 2024. He inked a two-year $41.2 million extension this past March, so if the math is correct (and he's interested), we're guaranteed four more years of this marriage.
Frankly, no one wants to see this arrangement end anytime soon. This is too much fun. Listen to the G.O.A.T. Saquon! There's no reason to walk away from this prematurely.

Eagles star Nolan Smith makes the expected claim in naming the top state for HS Football

Nolan Smith says Georgia produces the best football players One of the most enjoyable aspects of Howie Roseman's evolution has been watching him learn from the mistakes he made in the past. No one has ever accused the Philadelphia Eagles' general manager of being perfect, but have we seen another GM navigate the NFL's constant changes and do so any better? It's hard to think of one. Maybe you've never thought about the following statement this way. Then again, perhaps you have, but it feels like once Howie discovered the Alabama Crimson Tide and Georgia Bulldogs, things took off. It had been a while since the team plucked talent from two of the SEC's top programs. Before drafting Jalen Hurts in 2020 (and both DeVonta Smith and Landon Dickerson in 2021), the Eagles hadn't drafted a former member of The Tide since taking Freddie Milons in 2002. Before this recent and well-publicized run on UGA stars, the franchise hadn't raided the Dawgs since acquiring Brandon Boykin with a fourth-round pick in 2012. Sure, it may have taken a while, but once Howie caught on, the tidal wave began. Everyone is excited about seeing whether or not Nolan Smith can take another step in 2025, but for now, they'll have to settle for watching him on Exciting Mics. Nolan Smith unsurprisingly names Georgia as the best state for football It feels like this is restated every week now, but the 'exciting whites', Reed Blankenship and Cooper DeJean, may have struck gold with their Exciting Mics podcast. At the time of this story's release, they aren't even 20 episodes in, but something is already evident to everyone viewing. The guys have something special here. A recent episode features Nolan Smith. Everything was on the table, from the recruiting process and Super Bowl memories to his first impressions and the best football state. No one has to guess what his opinions are on the latter topic, do they? It's an interesting theory. Nolan is one of eight Philly Dawgs on the roster. Jalen Carter, Smael Mondon, Lewis Cine, Kelee Ringo, Jordan Davis, Nakobe Dean, and Azeez Ojulari are the other seven. The Birds are also pretty heavy with talent from South Carolina. K.J. Henry, Jeremiah Trotter Jr., Will Shipley, and Marcus Tate all played for the Clemson Tigers. However, it will be interesting to see how The Crimson Tide feels about his Georgia theory, considering Jihaad Campbell, Landon Dickerson, Cameron Latu, Byron Young, Tyler Steen, Eli Ricks, Jalen Hurts, and DeVonta Smith all had their start at Alabama at some point. Don't sleep on Pennsylvania, though, Nolan! That state has some ballers too, but again, we can all see why he'd be partial to Georgia.

How to watch this weekend's Mets at Phillies series as the NL East race heats up

Friends of 'Seinfeld' versus legends of 'Always Sunny' lore. The New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies are tethered together for an intriguing three-game weekend series, and the rivals start Friday's action tied atop the NL East. New York has the best collective ERA in baseball, even amid some recent stumbles. Philly is fantastic in its home park, with or without Bryce Harper (wrist). The winner of this matchup gets a leg up in the division and temporary authority over sandwich cheese selection. Fox is available over the air with a broadcast antenna. 'Sunday Night Baseball' can also be streamed on ESPN+. Both teams have star-laden lineups worth tuning in for. The trio of Juan Soto, Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso regularly turn Flushing into a red carpet affair. In Philadelphia, Trea Turner and Kyle Schwarber are slashing at the top of the league yet again. Naturally, MLB broadcast partners want a piece of this action. Advertisement Friday's opener streams via Apple TV+, which requires a separate subscription — a pressure point for the sport's most dedicated fans. Saturday's showdown is on Fox, although a regionalized coverage split means viewers out west will get the Kansas City Royals at San Diego Padres. ESPN hosts the series finale on 'Sunday Night Baseball,' with Jon Sciambi assuming his usual play-by-play duties; he's joined in the booth by former pro Eduardo Pérez and Mets great David Cone. Without any regional broadcasts here, we're sadly deprived of uncut Gary Cohen-Ron Darling energies, and we won't see John Kruk bond with his best friend. The headliner is right-hander Zack Wheeler on Friday night. The former No. 6 overall pick was a rising star in New York and recorded a 3.77 ERA across five Mets seasons. He then signed with the team's archenemy after the 2019 season and truly leveled up in Philadelphia — almost a full run knocked off his ERA (2.92), with 1,009 strikeouts and two Cy Young runner-up finishes. Wheeler led the National League in WHIP last year at 0.955; his 2025 mark is somehow considerably better at 0.886. The Phillies' ace enters Friday's home start in the 99th percentile for pitching run value. He is serving up premium unleaded nightmare fuel to opposing batters. David Peterson is set to start for the visitors on Sunday. He's been fantastic thus far and specializes in deflating, quieting ground-ball outs. The southpaw threw a complete-game shutout against the Washington Nationals on June 11. NYM-PHI from the New York Times archive — 2007: 'New York lost a seven-game lead in the National League East with 17 to play. 'It's embarrassing,' closer Billy Wagner said. 'That's the big thing.' The Mets went 5-12 to close out the season; the Phillies, a beleaguered franchise that had its own historic collapse in 1964, went 13-4. They capitalized as the Mets' pitching crumbled, their defense disintegrated and their offense, potent at times, fell silent at inopportune moments.' (Ben Shpigel) Advertisement From their first-ever head-to-head playoff series — 2024: 'The sellout crowd greeted Lindor with chants of 'M-V-P!' The fans did their part, rising to the occasion — even singing along to 'My Girl,' Lindor's walkup tune — to set the stage. Then Lindor delivered with the latest version of the biggest hit of the Mets' season … Citi Field may never have been louder. The place erupted. It was only fitting that Lindor came through with the hit that sent the Mets to the NLCS.' Flamengo scores 3 second-half goals to stun Chelsea 3-1 at the Club World Cup

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Danilo scored the go-ahead goal in the 65th minute and Flamengo scored three second-half goals to move atop its group at the Club World Cup with a 3-1 victory over Chelsea on Friday. Both teams went into the match with three points atop Group D with opening match wins. Flamengo will have to wait to see the results of the late match between LAFC and Esperance to see if it has secured a spot in the knockout round. Pedro Neto gave Chelsea the early lead. The ball bounced off a Flamengo defender and Neto gained control, charging toward the goal before putting it away in the 13th minute. Flamengo drew even in the 62nd on Bruno Henrique's goal on a tap-in in front of the goal. Moments later, the Brazilian giants took the lead off a corner with Danilo's goal. Wallace Yan all but put the game out of reach for the Blues with a goal in the 83rd. The Blues, the 2021 Club World Cup winner, defeated LAFC 2-0 in their opening match in Atlanta. Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernández scored. Luiz Araujo and Giorgian de Arrascaeta scored to lead Flamengo over Esperance 2-0. Former Chelsea defender Filipe Luís currently coaches Flamengo, while former Chelsea midfielder Jorginho made his debut for Flamengo against Esperance. Key Moment Down just 2-1, Chelsea still had a chance, but Nicolas Jackson was sent off in the 68th with a straight red just four minutes after replacing Liam Delap, who got his first start for Chelsea after making his debut for the Blues in the tournament opener. Takeaways Flamengo is in good position to move on to the round of 16, but they need a win or a tie by Esperance later on Friday to secure it. Chelsea plays Esperance on Tuesday in Philadelphia while Flamengo plays LAFC in Orlando. ___ AP soccer:
