How ex-NFL stars fought fentanyl at Super Bowl

NEW ORLEANS (NEXSTAR) — At this year's Super Bowl, a number of former NFL stars and even hall of famers were tackling an unlikely topic: the fight against fentanyl. Players like Emmitt Smith, Rod Woodson, and Kyle Richardson used the Super Bowl platform to raise awareness about the fentanyl crisis, partnering with various organizations engaged in the battle.
Richardson, who played nine years in the NFL and is now a healthcare entrepreneur, teamed up with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and NFL Alumni Health to promote life-saving conversations.
'We have a duty to speak up,' Richardson emphasized. 'People are dying. This crisis doesn't discriminate—it affects every neighborhood, every community. We need to arm people with knowledge and encourage life-saving conversations.'
His message largely focused on the dangers of fentanyl-laced pills, which are the leading cause of death among adults aged 18 to 45. Through his work with NFL Alumni Health, Richardson has joined forces with the DEA to spread the message that 'One Pill Can Kill, but One Conversation Can Save a Life.' This initiative aims to educate football fans and communities on the risks associated with fentanyl-laced pills.
Richardson is urging coaches, parents, and influencers to engage in discussions with young people about the dangers of counterfeit pills, which can be lethal even in small amounts.
Cheri Oz, a special agent in charge with the DEA's Phoenix office, highlighted the importance of parental vigilance, noting, 'As a mom, I talk to my kids every day about this. I monitor their social media because that's the most common way drug traffickers are targeting our kids.'
Richardson and the NFL Alumni Association represent just another unique layer in the fentanyl awareness campaign.

Prior to joining OpenAI as the company's first CMO, Rouch was CMO at Coinbase and, before that, spent over a decade at Meta, including as vice president, global head of brand and product marketing. Rouch said she started treatment right around the Super Bowl in February, when OpenAI aired its first-ever ad, and that she has since gone through 13 rounds of chemotherapy while leading OpenAI's marketing team. She wrote that she is expected to make a full recovery. "It has been the hardest season of life — for me, for my husband, and for our two young children," Rouch said, adding she has been supported by OpenAI "at every step." "Silicon Valley can be brutal and transactional. And yet — I've never felt more held," she said, adding that "people showed up in incredible and unexpected ways." Rouch also said OpenAI's ChatGPT has helped her navigate her diagnosis and treatment, including by explaining cancer in a way that is age-appropriate for her kids, helping her manage the side effects of chemo, and creating custom meditations. "Experiencing our work as a patient has made OpenAI's mission feel more personal and important," she said. Rouch said she was sharing her story to encourage other women to "prioritize their health over the demands of families and jobs." "A routine exam saved my life. It could save yours, too," she said. Business Insider reached out to OpenAI for comment. Kevin Weil, the chief product officer at OpenAI, expressed support for Rouch in a reply to her thread. "We love you @kate_rouch!" he wrote. "Proud of you for telling your story and for being so full of fight."

OpenAI Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) Kate Rouch will take a three-month medical leave after announcing today that she has been undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer since shortly after joining OpenAI in December. In a LinkedIn post, Rouch said her prognosis is excellent and that she plans to fully focus on healing. She added that Meta's former CMO, Gary Briggs, will serve as interim head of marketing during her leave. "Earlier this year-just weeks into my dream job-I was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. We moved to SF on days' notice for treatment, arriving Super Bowl Sunday," Rouch wrote. "For the past five months, I've been undergoing chemo at UCSF while leading our marketing team. It's been the hardest season of life-for me, my husband, and our two young kids." OpenAI Hires Instacart CEO Fidji Simo as Head of Applications Rouch joined OpenAI in December after serving as Coinbase's CMO. Prior to that she spent over a decade at Meta, rising to vice president and global head of brand and product marketing, where she led marketing for the company's core platforms-including Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Facebook-and worked alongside Briggs. "Silicon Valley can be sharp-edged-fast, competitive, transactional. But getting sick revealed something deeper," Rouch wrote. "We're not cogs in the same machine-we're waves from the same sea." Colts' Anthony Richardson suffers shoulder injury with quarterback battle looming

Anthony Richardson heads into his third season with a real quarterback battle, but his pursuit to win the starting job for the 2025 season will be harder after suffering an injury. Richardson is dealing with a shoulder injury in his throwing arm, and he won't be participating in the Colts' minicamp next week, per head coach Shane Steichen. Steichen added that Richardson suffered the injury last week during organized team activities. "Doctors, trainers checked it out," Steichen said, per "He's got some aggravation in his AC joint. So, we're going to sit him out this week. Obviously, he'll sit out for minicamp. We'll see when he comes back. Not going to put a timetable for training camp on it, but when he does come back, we'll ease him into throwing, and then we'll go from there. The good thing is he's not going to need a procedure right now." While Steichen noted the injury not being serious enough for surgery, a procedure wasn't ruled out down the line. Richardson has dealt with numerous injuries in his first two NFL seasons, which included a season-ending shoulder injury after four games in his rookie year. An oblique injury in 2024 kept him out two games. Richardson, the team's fourth overall pick in 2023 out of Florida, struggled in his return to the Colts last year, throwing for just 1,814 yards in 11 games with a 47.7% completion rate. Steichen made the move to bench Richardson last season as he struggled, with backup Joe Flacco replacing him under center. This year, the Colts brought in Daniel Jones, who the New York Giants cut ties with midway through the 2024 campaign due to his own struggles, to compete with Richardson in training camp. While Jones didn't pan out under his four-year extension in New York, he does have years of starting in the NFL under his belt. His addition to the quarterbacks room led many to believe Richardson's job wasn't safe. Richardson now has to battle another injury before battling Jones. "It's frustrating, but he is in good spirits," Steichen said of Richardson. "So we're working through it right now."
