'Brazen' disregard for roads policing has to be addressed quickly, minister says
Garda Commissioner Drew Harris said that an unpublished report found gardai showed a "blatant disregard" for their job while they knew their actions were being reviewed.
It comes amid a focus on road safety in Ireland, with the government introducing new speed laws and the Garda Commissioner mandating that frontline gardai dedicate 30 minutes of road policing duties per shift.
Sean Canney, a junior minister with responsibility for road safety, said the findings were "shocking" and "serious".
"There's no point in us bringing in laws, reducing speed limits, doing all of this kind of thing, if we don't have a functional enforcement section within the Gardai," he said on RTE Radio. 31.07.2025. . Mr Canney said his thoughts were with the families of the 95 people who had died on Irish roads so far this year.
He said he had not read the report conducted by the consultancy firm Crowe, which has carried out investigations on behalf of An Garda Siochana previously, but planned to meet the Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan and both the outgoing and incoming Garda Commissioners over the issue.
"I'll be talking to the commissioners to express my deep concern with what is in this report," he said.
He said the independent Crowe report was conducted while the reviewer was "sitting in the car with a garda that wasn't doing his duty and didn't seem to have a problem with that." A Garda road closure sign
"So I think there is definitely a serious case to be answered here as quickly as possible."
Mr Harris said he commissioned the examination after he received an anonymous report from a whistleblower.
The chairwoman of the Policing and Community Safety Authority, Elaine Byrne, said the report was "shocking" and found some gardai showed a "blatant disregard" for road policing while they knew their actions were being reviewed.
"They were openly hostile to doing their job," she said, in what she described as a "wake-up call" for An Garda Siochana.
She also described an issue with fear among Garda managers of carrying out poor performance management, which she said Mr Harris agreed was an issue.

Garda hospitalised after being assaulted while arresting sword-wielding man
A man has been charged with assaulting a garda after he was caught brandishing a sword in South Dublin last night. Officers responded to calls from locals that a man was walking around the Ballyogan area of South Dublin, armed with a sword in the early hours of this morning. When officers responded they attempted to apprehend the man, who was carrying what appeared to be a sword. It is understood the man, who is originally from an Eastern European country, has been residing in Ireland for some time, and gardai do have mental health concerns regarding this incident. One officer was minorly injured in the course of the arrest, before the man was apprehended and disarmed. The man was taken to Blackrock Garda station where he was subsequently charged with assault. He remains in Garda custody and is set to appear in court on Monday morning. The injured Garda was taken to hospital and has since been discharged. In a statement about the incident gardai said: 'Gardaí at Blackrock responded to reports of a male in possession of a sword in the Ballyogan area of Dublin shortly after 1:30am on Sunday, 3rd July 2025. The individual, a male in his 40s, was arrested and has since been charged in connection with the incident. He is expected to appear before the Courts (CCJ 2) on Monday, 4th August 2025. 'A member of An Garda Síochána (male) sustained an injury while responding and was taken to hospital for assessment. He has since been discharged. As the matter is now before the courts, An Garda Síochána is not providing further information at this time.' The driver of the car, an adult male aged in his late teens, who was sole occupant of the car, was airlifted to Cork University Hospital. Gardaí have carried out an examination of the scene and the road has now been reopened. Spain holiday horror as Irish tourists battered by gang in late-night ambush
Two Irish tourists were left with facial fractures and other injuries after being attacked by a teenage gang of armed robbers in a Costa del Sol holiday resort. They were assaulted as they walked back to their hotel in the picturesque town of Nerja around 30 miles east of Malaga after a boozy night out. Police are understood to have identified the suspects as four local youngsters believed to include a minor. It was not immediately clear this morning if the Civil Guard has made any arrests. The mugging happened in the early hours of Friday morning. Respected local paper Sur said the culprits threatened their victims with a knife before repeatedly punching and kicking them and fleeing with stolen cash and mobile phones. It described the attack as so "violent" remains of blood were left spattered on a residential property by where the mugging took place. Police were alerted by local residents who heard screams and shouting. The Irish holidaymakers, who were said to have been unable to defend themselves properly from the blows they received because they were drunk, reportedly each suffered several facial fractures among other injuries. They were taken to a nearby health centre and are thought to have been transferred afterwards to hospital. The Civil Guard in Malaga has not yet made any official comment about the incident. Nerja is the easternmost town on the Costa del Sol and is known for its beautiful beaches and its caves stretching for almost five kilometres which are one of Spain's major tourist attractions. In September last year a 29-year-old Irish holidaymaker ended up in a specialist hospital burns unit after a freak accident at a friend's wedding in the resort. She was seriously injured after being engulfed in flames when her dress caught fire on decorative candles as she was in the bathroom. Fellow guests dialled 999 after finding her semi-conscious at a holiday rental apartment. She was initially taken to a hospital in the nearby city of Malaga where she is understood to have undergone an emergency operation before being transferred to a burns unit at Seville's Virgen del Rocio University Hospital.
