City technician recovering in hospital after electric shock
Spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the injured technician is being monitored after he was airlifted to Milpark Hospital, Johannesburg on June 18.
The incident occurred during restoration efforts following a widespread outage that affected several suburbs in the east on June 16.
The outage was linked to a trip at the Wapadrand Substation. Technicians were deployed the next day and traced the issue to a cable fault.
However, while the team was conducting tests to pinpoint the fault, one of the electricians suffered an electric shock and sustained burn injuries.
The substation transformer also tripped again.
Emergency services were called immediately, and the injured worker was stabilised on site before being transported to hospital for further care.
MMC for Utility Services Frans Boshielo, accompanied by senior managers, visited the technician on June 18.
Boshielo said the visit was to assess the situation and give support to the family.
'Our technician was unfortunately injured by electrical equipment whilst on duty,' he explained.
Boshielo said they met with the family at the hospital, who said they appreciated the presence of the city's officials.
'While it's still early to give any comment about his condition, we were nonetheless assured of the best care possible that is being afforded to him,' he said.
Boshielo expressed his appreciation to the staff at Milpark and the family.
'In the meantime, we must allow him time to recover and to keep our colleague and his family in all our prayers.'
He added that as the Energy and Electricity Department, they were anguished by the incident and wished their colleague a speedy recovery.
'We wish to inform our staff who need counselling to inform their managers so that they can be assisted as soon as possible. Safety of our employees is of importance, and we will comply with the OHS Act, Act no 85 of 1993 requirements.'

Helping Hands thanks Dannhauser school for recognising vital community work
Helping Hands — a community-based organisation dedicated to assisting the destitute, needy and vulnerable — has expressed heartfelt thanks to Dannhauser Primary School for recognising its work. Chairperson Farzanah Dookie told the Courier that the organisation strives to make a difference wherever possible. 'We do this through various initiatives. When people in our community face challenges, especially with basic needs like food and water, we step in to help wherever we can,' she explained. Helping Hands partners with local businesses to source food parcels, which are then repacked into smaller portions to reach more households. The group also receives a nutritious soup mix from 'Reach Out for Hunger', which is served to children on Sundays when no school feeding schemes are available. Dookie added that the organisation also appeals to churches and other groups for gently-used clothing, school shoes for children, and blankets for the elderly. 'We really appreciate it when people notice our work,' she said. 'It's not an easy task — we aren't funded by any organisation, so we do struggle at times. But with the support of caring people, we manage to help so many who are unemployed, especially given the high joblessness in our community.' Lonehill play park gets safety upgrade
Lonehill residents can look forward to a safer play environment for their children, as City Parks has officially appointed a contractor to install rubberised fall-safe surfaces at Lonehill Park. The upgrade, which began on August 15, will see all the children's play equipment fitted with rubberised surfacing, with the exception of one jungle gym that will be completed at a later stage. Read more: Reddy blasts mayor's visit to Ginger Park The project is expected to take about 10 days to finish, during which the play park will be closed for safety reasons. Councillor David Foley, of Ward 94, welcomed the development, noting that the idea was first raised after Beverley Park received a similar upgrade in November 2023. 'I requested City Parks to consider rubberising Lonehill's play park back then, and I'm delighted to see the project taking shape now.' Foley extended thanks to City Parks Region A manager Joseph Ndou for allocating the budget, as well as to his team who will oversee the project. On behalf of residents, Lonehill Residents Association spokesperson Shelly Miller expressed their gratitude. 'A big thank you to City Parks for making this happen. We really appreciate initiatives like this that improve our local spaces.' The new surfacing will not only enhance the park's safety; it also makes playtime more enjoyable for children in the community.
