Over 50% of drug abuse cases in Perak involve youths
Perak PEMADAM chairman Mohd Azlan Helmi revealed that out of 14,534 reported cases, 7,488 involved young individuals, calling the trend alarming. He stressed the need for stronger preventive measures, including community involvement.
'To prevent the situation from worsening, all parties, including the community, must play their part,' he said after officiating the PEMADAM Mini Carnival and flagging off the Perak PEMADAM Run and Explorace 2025 at Polo Ground. The event drew over 1,500 participants.
PEMADAM has also enlisted 150 student volunteers to combat drug abuse in higher education institutions. 'These young people serve as awareness agents on campuses, helping spread anti-drug messages effectively,' Mohd Azlan added.
The association has launched an official website to provide information and facilitate online volunteer registrations. - Bernama

Notorious gang leader killed in shootout
Reign of terror: Police collecting evidence at the scene of the shootout along Jalan Bukit Tunku, Kuala Lumpur. — Bernama KUALA LUMPUR: A notorious local gang leader with a long criminal record was killed in a dramatic shootout with the police on Jalan Bukit Tunku here. The 4.10am operation yesterday was part of a special initiative codenamed 'Ops Api KL', led by the Bukit Aman Crime Investigation Department (CID) in collaboration with the Kuala Lumpur Police. Acting Bukit Aman CID director Deputy Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus said the 36-year-old Malaysian man was believed to be the mastermind behind a criminal syndicate involved in house break-ins, armed robbery and drug distribution across Kuala Lumpur, Perak and Selangor since last year, resulting in more than RM1mil in losses. 'The suspect, who was shot dead at the scene, is believed to be the leader of a gang that has been actively targeting homes and business premises with safes, gold and cash,' he told reporters. Also at the scene were Sentul OCPD Asst Comm Ahmad Sukarno Mohd Zahari and other CID officers. DCP Fadil said the suspect opened fire on police when they attempted to intercept him while he was allegedly surveying the area for potential robbery targets. 'A shootout ensued and the suspect fatally shot on-site. 'Several bullet holes were found on a police vehicle. A revolver was recovered from the suspect.' DCP Fadil said the suspect had 44 offences on his criminal record. Checks on the luxury vehicle driven by the suspect revealed that it was using a fake registration plate and is believed to have been smuggled in from a neighbouring country, he said. 'Investigations suggest that gang members sometimes pose as police officers and are also linked to a drug distribution syndicate. 'Efforts are ongoing to track down the remaining individuals involved,' he said.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 6 (Bernama) -- The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is urging all parties to stop any action of uploading or sharing unverified information related to the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir. Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said police have detected the spread of information and a child's pictures linked to the Zara Qairina case by irresponsible parties on social media. He stated that the shared information is inaccurate and has the potential to confuse the public, besides potentially affecting the ongoing investigation and hindering the process of justice for all involved. "The entire investigation process for the case, including the post-mortem issue, is being conducted according to existing procedures and legal provisions, and all parties are advised to stop any action of uploading or sharing unverified information, including disclosing information related to the case investigation," he said in a statement tonight. Mohd Khalid said the act of disclosing information related to the case can be investigated under Section 15 of the Child Act 2001, which involves a prohibition on revealing the identity, address, school name, and pictures of the child involved, as well as Section 203A of the Penal Code for offenses related to the disclosure of information. "The individuals involved can also be investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of a network facility or network service. Adherence to the law is the basis of national peace and well-being. Any violation will be met with firm action in accordance with existing provisions," he said. Zara Qairina, 13, was confirmed to have died at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah on July 17.
