Man nabbed, RM2mil worth of untaxed cigarettes seized
GEORGE TOWN: Authorities have arrested a man and seized 6,100 cartons of untaxed cigarettes worth over RM2 million during an enforcement operation on the North-South Expressway (NSE).
The operation, carried out by the General Operations Force (GOF) Kulim, Kedah, took place at Km139.9 northbound, near the Penang Bridge interchange.
GOF Northern Brigade commander Senior Assistant Commissioner Shahrum Hashim said the cigarettes were being transported from the southern region for distribution in the northern states.
He said investigations revealed that the syndicate had been operating for at least a month, using a specific method to transport the contraband before distributing it to traders.
He said the estimated value of the seized cigarettes was RM2,014,600.
"We have been monitoring the movement and modus operandi used to transport the cigarettes for distribution to traders over the past month.
"We believe this successful operation has disrupted yet another cigarette distribution syndicate profiting from evading government taxes," he said in a statement tonight.
The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
It carries a fine of up to 20 times the value of the goods or RM500,000, or imprisonment of up to five years, or both, upon conviction.
Shahrum said the operation is part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal smuggling activities across Perak, Penang, and Kedah.
"We urge the public to report any suspicious activity to help curb tax evasion and smuggling crimes," he added.
Shahrum reaffirmed the agency's commitment to strict enforcement and zero tolerance toward illegal trade.

The victim's mother then tried to stop Shahmar who suddenly took a machete and threatened the victim with the weapon. Processing, sale of ketum juice: 4 arrested in Kota Belud

KOTA BELUD: Four men aged between 20 and 50 were arrested in separate raids across several villages in the district for suspected involvement in the processing and sale of ketum juice. Kota Belud District Police Chief Supt Shahrudin Mat Husain said a team from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division of Kota Belud District Police Headquarters (IPD) conducted the raids from May 24 to June 5. Advertisement He said the arrests were made following intelligence gathering in Kampung Taun Gusi, Tampasuk 1, Kampung Suang Punggur, Kampung Pintasan and Kampung Ambong. 'The first arrest involved a man at a house in Kampung Pintasan at 11.30am, along with the seizure of eight bottles containing 1.5 litres of ketum juice. 'In the second raid at 3.25pm at a house in Kampung Taun Gusi, a man was arrested along with 24 bottles, each containing 1.5 litres of ketum juice,' he said. On June 5, a raid was conducted at a house in Kampung Ambong where another two men were arrested along with 10 bottles containing 1.5 litres of ketum juice. 'Further investigations revealed that the ketum juice was sold to customers at RM25 to RM30 per bottle,' he said. Briton's death: How did backpacker enter construction site, asks Lee
KUALA LUMPUR: The authorities must investigate how a 25-year-old British national managed to trespass onto a construction site before falling into an elevator shaft. Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye questioned whether proper safety measures were in place, describing the incident as preventable. "The responsibility falls on the shoulders of the contractors and those managing the work site," he said. "Was there any signage at the site or a barricade? Were there any security personnel present? If they were on duty, they would not have allowed him to go through." He added that the company carrying out construction must conduct an internal investigation to prevent recurrence. Lee, who is also the former chairman of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, stressed that construction sites were legally required to have security measures in place to prevent trespassing. A construction work contractor is required to identify the perimeter of a construction site with a suitable sign and fence the area off under regulation 20(2) of the Occupational Safety and Health (Construction Work) (Design and Management) Regulations 2024. Anyone who violates the regulation may be liable to a fine not exceeding RM500,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year or both. On Thursday, the police confirmed that missing British backpacker Jordan Johnson-Doyle was found dead in an elevator shaft of a partially under-construction condominium in Bangsar here. A post-mortem showed that the cause of death was a chest injury due to a fall from height.
