IPOH: The 2nd Battalion General Operations Force (GOF) in Kulim, Kedah, has successfully seized 6,100 cartons of various brands of illicit cigarettes worth more than RM2 million (RM2,014,600). Ulu Kinta GOF Northern Brigade Commander SAC Shahrum Hashim said the enforcement operation was carried out at Kilometre 139.9 of the North-South Expressway (PLUS) northbound near the Penang Bridge interchange exit. 'The results of an investigation found that the supply of cigarettes was brought from the south of the country to be distributed to the northern state market. 'The Battalion 2 GOF Intelligence Branch has successfully traced the movement of activities and the modus operandi used in bringing the cigarette load before distributing them to traders in the past month,' he said in a statement tonight. Shahrum said the case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 and is punishable under Section 135 (1)(v)(aa) of the same act.

GEORGE TOWN: Authorities have arrested a man and seized 6,100 cartons of untaxed cigarettes worth over RM2 million during an enforcement operation on the North-South Expressway (NSE). The operation, carried out by the General Operations Force (GOF) Kulim, Kedah, took place at Km139.9 northbound, near the Penang Bridge interchange. GOF Northern Brigade commander Senior Assistant Commissioner Shahrum Hashim said the cigarettes were being transported from the southern region for distribution in the northern states. He said investigations revealed that the syndicate had been operating for at least a month, using a specific method to transport the contraband before distributing it to traders. He said the estimated value of the seized cigarettes was RM2,014,600. "We have been monitoring the movement and modus operandi used to transport the cigarettes for distribution to traders over the past month. "We believe this successful operation has disrupted yet another cigarette distribution syndicate profiting from evading government taxes," he said in a statement tonight. The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967. It carries a fine of up to 20 times the value of the goods or RM500,000, or imprisonment of up to five years, or both, upon conviction. Shahrum said the operation is part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal smuggling activities across Perak, Penang, and Kedah. "We urge the public to report any suspicious activity to help curb tax evasion and smuggling crimes," he added. SEMPORNA: Marine Police foiled an attempt by two men to make off with sawn timber believed stolen from Pulau Timbun Mata Forest Reserve, on Wednesday. Sabah Region Four Marine Commander, ACP Mohd Nazri Ibrahim, said while patrolling in the Tobo-Tobo waters, the team spotted a speed boat carrying the sawn timber, at about 1.30am Advertisement 'Upon inspection, the team found that the boat was operated by a 41-year-old local man and a 42-year-old foreigner. 'All the seizures, including the boat and its engine, were estimated to be worth RM30,350,' he said, adding that the case would be investigated under the Forest Enactment 1968 and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. In a separate raid, the Marine seized a total of 663kg of packets of subsidised cooking oil following an operation off Kampung Panji waters. The subsidised items were left inside a speed boat which was towed to a jetty. The items were believed to be smuggled out to a neighbouring country. He said all the seizures estimated worth RM62,014 and investigation would be carried out under the Control of Supply Act 1961. Marine Sabah remains committed to combating smuggling activities for national safety and well-being. In Lahad Datu, police arrested three men and seized substance suspected to be syabu worth RM8,063. The arrest and seizure were made following a raid on a hut at Kg Ubi, Jalan Kenangan conducted by the Narcotic Crime Investigation Division (JSJN) of Lahad Datu Police Headquarters. Acting District Police Chief, Supt Jimmy Panyau, said following the raid, the team seized 73.30 grammes of syabu as well as tools suspected of being used in the drug-related activities. 'Urine tests conducted on the suspects showed two of them tested positive for Methamphetamine and Amphetamine. 'All three suspects aged between 27 and 48 were detained for further investigations,' he said. Jimmy said they suspects also did not have any valid identification documents.
