Clean sock: Trader fined RM1,200 for punching stall owner over cleanliness rebuke

BATU PAHAT: A trader was fined RM1,200 by the Yong Peng magistrate's court here today for punching a stall owner in the mouth until it bled after being told by the victim to stop littering on Saturday. He was charged with voluntarily causing hurt to the 31-year-old man at his stall in Taman Putera Indah, Tongkang Pechah, at 5pm on Aug 9. The charge carries a jail term of up to one year, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both upon conviction. However, magistrate Arun Noval Dass imposed the fine on S.M. Yusoff Othman, 56, after taking into account his guilty plea as well as submissions from both the prosecution and defence. The court also ordered a two-month jail term if the fine was not paid. Yusoff settled the fine. According to the facts, the victim had rebuked the accused for littering at his stall and told him to maintain cleanliness, which angered the latter. A quarrel broke out before Yusoff punched the man in the mouth, an act witnessed by his brother-in-law, who later lodged a report. Deputy public prosecutor Farah Wahidah Mohd Sharip appeared for the prosecution, while Tan Song Yan from the National Legal Aid Foundation represented the accused.

Woman fined RM1,000 for hitting man with broom after TikTok insult

PETALING JAYA: A housewife was fined RM1,000 by the magistrates' court today for assaulting a man with a broom after he insulted her during a live TikTok stream last month. Magistrate Shahril Anuar Ahmad Mustapha imposed the fine on K. Mahaletchimy, 50, after she pleaded guilty to the charge. Shahril ordered her to serve a month in jail if she fails to pay the fine. The visibly saddened Mahaletchimy entered her guilty plea immediately after the charge was read out by a court interpreter. "I understand. I plead guilty," she said. She had arrived earlier at the courtroom accompanied by several family members, who sat in the public gallery during proceedings. According to the charge, Mahaletchimy voluntarily caused hurt to the 24-year-old victim at about 7.30pm at the security guard post of a primary school in Puchong on July 5. The offence, under Section 323 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum one-year jail term, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both upon conviction. According to the facts of the case, Mahaletchimy was upset that the victim had made disparaging remarks about her during the stream. She confronted him and struck his left arm with a broom. When the victim tried to flee, she chased after him and hit him again with the broom. She was arrested in Kinrara on July 30 by investigators from the Serdang district police headquarters. Investigations revealed she had assaulted the victim with a broom and the act was caught on closed-circuit television camera footage. National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer Muhd Muqri Mohd Khairi appealed for leniency, citing Mahaletchimy's early guilty plea, which saved the court's time, and the fact that she is a first offender. "She was remanded for two days for investigations and has shown remorse. "She was released and voluntarily came to court today to face the charge. "I ask for a minimal fine on her," he said. Deputy public prosecutor Lim Leong Hui asked the court to impose a proportionate sentence to serve as a deterrent. After proceedings, Mahaletchimy said she had lost her patience and struck the victim after he made disparaging remarks about her. "It involves my dignity, and what he said cannot be tolerated," she said.

Project manager claims trial to 68 money laundering charges involving over RM688,000

SHAH ALAM: A part-time project manager has been charged with 68 counts of money laundering involving more than RM688,000. R. Vikram Menon, 46, pleaded not guilty after all the charges were read to him before Sessions judge Awang Kerisnada Awang Mahmud here on Tuesday (Aug 12). He is accused of transferring and disposing of illicit funds totalling RM688,916.85 between Oct 17, 2023, and Oct 15 last year in Damansara. The offences allegedly involved 301 transactions to 67 bank accounts for fund transfers, and 159 transactions for online and cash disposals ranging from RM1,000 to over RM90,000. Vikram Menon was charged under Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001, which carries a maximum jail term of 15 years and a fine of at least five times the value of the illicit proceeds or RM5mil, whichever is higher, upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Wan Nur Amanina Wan Din sought bail of RM80,000 for all charges with one surety. The accused's lawyer, S. Kulasegaran, appealed for a lower amount of RM30,000, arguing that bail was intended to secure the accused's attendance in court and not to serve as punishment. The court set bail at RM70,000 with one surety, and ordered the accused to report to the Sungai Buloh police headquarters at the start of every month, surrender his passport, and refrain from contacting prosecution witnesses. The next case mention was fixed for Oct 13. – Bernama
