Kota Kinabalu: Some 80 students aged 13-15 took part in the a basic skills coaching clinic organised by the Ex State Footballers Association (ESFA) at SMK Gunsanad II in Keningau over the weekend. ESFA president Datuk James Wong was very pleased with the big turnout for their first clinic of the year. 'The two-day clinic was conducted by ex-internationals Yap Wai Loon and Razali Zinin with assistance from the school teachers for the boys, while the girls side was led by ex-international Nortinah Ongkalis assisted by a few ex-State ladies players. 'It was really good to see the young boys and girls reacting to the clinic. They were clearly happy to be taught the simple basic skills. 'A big shout out to the Headmaster of SMK Gunsanad II Mike Eping for allowing the clinic to be held on the school's field and it was also good to see the presence of several ex-State players in the likes of Gerald Mojiliu, Aliron Nulantan, Henry Anjun, Yassin Jimbun and Karim Ansaroi, who came out to give us support,' he said. He also expressed his gratitude to another ex-State player Shanmugam Sundram for coordinating the clinic. He added that the programme received positive response and there are requests to hold similar clinics in Sook, Nabawan and Tambunan. However, he said this may only be possible after the next clinic to be held in Ranau. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? #SHOWBIZ: Yuna to Jojo Ghazali: Keep on fighting, many are still supporting you

KUALA LUMPUR: Singer Yuna recently offered words of encouragement to Malaysian Muay Thai champion, Johan Ghazali, also known as Jojo, who faced criticism after his recent match loss. The 38-year-old artiste commented on Jojo's Instagram post, urging him to persevere despite the criticism. Yuna added that the negative remarks came from only a small number of detractors, while most of his fans continued to show their support with kind and encouraging comments for the 18-year-old national athlete. "Keep fighting. Believe me, this condemnation is likely from that 10 per cent who have too much time on their hands to criticise people on social media," she wrote. "But there are many others who still have your back. You just have to keep on fighting. Do it for yourself and your family. We remain proud of you." Jojo recently lost to Colombian-American Diego Paez in an exciting bout at ONE Fight Night 32 at Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

On track to produce more champs

Published on: Tuesday, June 10, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 10, 2025 By: GL Oh Text Size: Some of the participants with officials after the closing ceremony. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Muaythai Association is on track to produce more champions in the future as the Sabah Muaythai Expo-Rookie Challenge organised by them was successfully held at the Revolution Combat Gym (State Muaythai Training Centre) in Penampang over the weekend. A total of 139 fighters aged 14-20 from 22 gyms throughout the State took part in the two-day competition for those with less than five fights experience. Advertisement State coach Cyrille Dhillon Tahing, who initiated the event, said the main aim was to lay a strong grassroots foundation in the sport as well as to give opportunity for the Sabah Games (Saga) bound athletes. 'Our main goal is not just to find a winner, but to build a strong foundation for the development of Muaythai in the State. 'Many out there may have great potential, but they don't have the opportunity to prove their abilities in a competitive environment, especially new athletes. 'Therefore, the Rookie Challenge was created as their first platform to meet their opponents on the same level, in a controlled, safe and professional environment. 'I believe that from this event, future champions will be born who will bring glory to Sabah at the national and international levels. 'This is also one of the strategic steps to help athletes to prepare ahead of the Sabah Games (Saga XI) in Tawau. 'I want them to be more prepared, confident, and experienced when representing their respective districts or teams later,' he said. President Hj Nazri Abd Razak was also happy with the positive response and said the competition played an important role in strengthening the Muaythai ecosystem in the State. 'It is through grassroots competitions like this, we not only provide opportunities for new talents to shine, but also instil a deep interest in combat sports among the younger generation. 'The Rookie Challenge was created specifically for our amateur athletes to compete on a big platform, and through a professional judging system and high competition standards. 'We want to build confidence and a winning mentality from the very beginning as we believe every champion has to start from the bottom,' he said. He also thanked strategic partners including Milo Malaysia, sponsors, coaches and all Muaythai fans in the State for their continued support. Meanwhile, Kapayan State Assembly representative Jannie Lasimbang, who officiated the opening ceremony, congratulated the State body and those involved for successfully staging the event. 'As a representative of the people, I feel very proud to see efforts like this — which not only raise the status of Muaythai, but also have a great impact on the development of young people's character. 'We live in a world full of distractions and temptations. Social pressures, easy access to illicit substances, and unstoppable negative influences — all of these have become realities that we cannot take lightly, especially in areas like Penampang. 'I believe that if we want to see a strong and prosperous society, we need to start from the foundation. A tournament like this is an important step towards that,' she said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? He was met at the Kunak Town Field while witnessing the football final organised by Safa Kunak between Mostyn FC and Uncle Chang FC. In the match, Uncle Chang FC from Semporna emerged champions through a penalty shootout after both teams were tied without goals at the end of the match. Safa Kunak recorded several achievements under his leadership, including the discovery of several Under-23 and Under-18 young players who were featured in the State Safa squad, as well as national-level tournaments. Anil said he will continue to give strong support to local teams in the district striving to produce young talents in football and other sports development. On the same matter, he said the development of sports facilities should be expedited, with the need for a sports complex in Kunak being a key priority to ensure athletes have proper and comfortable facilities across various sports. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
