Four from Sarawak to compete in National Snooker Championship
SIBU (July 30): Four players will represent the state at the upcoming 34th National Closed Snooker Championship to be held in Kuala Lumpur.
Newly-crowned Sarawak Closed champion Edmund Bong from Kuching will spearhead Sarawak's challenge.
The other three players are Franklyn Ee, Tan Ching Yong and Max Heng.
Ee was runner-up after losing to Bong in the final of the recent Sarawak Closed held in Sarikei.
Tan and Heng, both from Kuching, were the losing semi-finalists.
Bong will be looking to make more history after he became the first Sarawakian to reach the last 16 at the 32nd edition. He eliminated national player and tournament favourite Lim Kok Leong with a sensational 5-4 victory in the last 32.
Meanwhile, about 100 players took part in Sarawak Closed which was organised by Sarawak Billiards Snooker and Sports Federation (SBSSF) in collaboration with Sarikei Club Cue Repok.
Tournament director Elvis Wong said the high number of players taking part was testimony that the sport is gaining popularity especially with so many new faces taking part.
Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii, the federal Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Sustainability, gave away the prizes.

KUALA LUMPUR: Bowler Gillian Lim wrapped up her PWBA Tour debut season on a high, leading Malaysia's challenge at the Tour Championship despite narrowly missing out on the stepladder finals. The 26-year-old Sarawakian placed eighth in the 24-player standings with a three-block total of 5,725 pinfalls at ABC Gates Bowl in New York. This marked her fourth top-10 finish of the season after the Rock 'n' Roll Open (fifth), Waterloo Open (ninth) and US Women's Open (seventh). She pocketed US$6,250 (RM26,460) for her efforts. Natasha Roslan finished 11th on 5,664 to earn US$4,200, while defending champion Sin Li Jane — last year's winner — could only manage 23rd with 5,258, taking home US$2,550. Her season also included two other top 15 outings, 15th at the Topeka Open and 13th at the Rochester Open.

Sarawakian Azhad put on 10kg only to blaze muaythai trail
Azhad (right) stands with Jumaat to display the coveted championship belt. KUCHING (Aug 6): Azhad Haziq Syafaat Abdul Khalid carved his name into the local muaythai history by clinching the 80kg title at the National Combat Sports Championships (Pre-Sukma) & Muaythai National Grand Prix 2025 at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur from July 24-27. The 20-year-old from Petra Jaya displayed grit to overcome Iqmal Arif of Singapore's Gorilla Boxing Club in a fiercely contested final. It earned Azhad the coveted National Championship Belt and made him the first Sarawakian to claim the top national ranking in the 75-80kg weight class. What made the feat even more remarkable was that Azhad wasn't even fighting in his natural weight class. 'This was an entirely new challenge for me,' Azhad told reporters during the thanksgiving and celebration dinner hosted by Sarawak State Muaythai Association president Jumaat Ibrahim at a local restaurant last Saturday. 'I usually compete in the 70kg category. To step into the 75–80kg bracket, I had to put on almost 10kg. It was my first time fighting opponents this size and it wasn't easy.' Yet, under the bright lights and roaring crowd, Azhad dug deep to uncover the discipline, composure and heart to power his way to glory. The Politeknik Kuching student saw the victory not just as a title but also a stepping stone to greater heights. 'This win motivates me to push myself further. I know I still have room to grow and I want to keep improving with every fight,' he said. 'While this win is special, my real focus will be to remain in the 70kg division where I feel most at home. That's where I'll continue to chase my dreams,' he added. Azhad Haziq Syafaat Abdul Khalid
