A few weeks ago we spoke about Lazio Vicenza. A dramatic must-win last game of the season to avoid relegation to Serie C and possibly the end of the club itself. Seven minutes from time, Giuliano Fiorini finally scored and the Biancocelesti won. Now they had to face a playoff with Taranto and Campobasso.
There were high hopes before the first match against Taranto. The team, who had been in psychological and physical difficulty, in the final stages of the Campionato seemed to regain the spirit that had characterised the first part of the season when Lazio were closer to the top spots than the relegation battle. The playoffs were held in Naples, seen as neutral ground. It certainly was not.

Taranto vs Lazio was held on Saturday, June 27. 25,000 fans from Rome invaded Naples. One single traffic jam on the Roma Napoli motorway right from the early hours of the day, 197 kilometres bumper to bumper. Many fans missed the first half. There were also clashes with the Napoli fans, a bus went up in flames.
The match saw Lazio attacking but with caution and Taranto parking the bus in front of the goal. In the second half in the 65th minute, the Apulians scored. A shot from the centre of the box was saved by Giuliano Terraneo, the ball arrived to Antonio De Vitis two metres offside, simple tap in. Everybody looked to the linesman who instead of raising his flag, ran towards the centre of the pitch. Lazio tried a comeback but only managed to hit a crossbar with Luca Brunetti. Despair.
All eyes were then on the second match between Taranto and Campobasso in the hope that Taranto won. The teams basically did nothing the entire match, content with the goalless draw. Lazio now needed to beat Campobasso to stay in Serie B.
Sunday, July 5. Another mass exodus from Rome, this time without too much logistic trouble. The Biancocelesti approached the game like the first one, with a cautious but attacking spirit. A couple of chances but the first half ended 0-0.

Back in the city, silence reigned. Most were watching the game on TV, others were listening to the radio. Even some Roma fans for once were supporting Lazio. Zero traffic, Rome was absolutely dead.
At the beginning of the second half, there was a cross inside the Lazio penalty box. Francesco Boito was all alone in the middle of the penalty area and all he needed to do was to aim his header on either side and it would have been a goal.
At this point, there is a need for a little digression. A famous Italian sports journalist, Sandro Petrucci, once said that when Lazio were on the edge of the abyss, there was always an invisible hand that avoided the fall. As if the Gods made sure that Lazio never disappeared.
This must have been the case. Boito headed the ball centrally towards Terraneo who saved comfortably. Ball in the other half, Mimmo Caso passed to Massimo Piscedda on the left just outside the box, a marvellous cross, Fabio Poli jumped higher than anyone and headed the ball into the net. Delirium on the pitch, in the stands and in Rome where the silence was broken by shouts of 'GOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLL'!!!!

Lazio were safe.
In Memory: Vincenzo D'Amico
Vincenzo D'Amico was one of the greatest talents in Italian football. Born in Latina, near Rome, on November 5, 1954, he joined Lazio in 1970. He was undisciplined, often got into trouble and certainly liked his food, but he was a natural. By the time he debuted professionally on May 21 1971 against Modena, he was already a well-known name among fans. Many went to see that match just to have a first glimpse of Lazio's Golden Boy, as many called him at the time.
It took time for him to reach the first eleven because he suffered two serious injuries which kept him away from the pitch until 1973. He debuted in Serie A on October 14 and from then on basically never left the team. Manager Tommaso Maestrelli made sure Vincenzo never got into trouble by confiscating his driver's licence, limiting his wages, and making sure, via Captain Pino Wilson, that he did not overeat. It worked as D'Amico, at only 19, became one of the protagonists of Lazio's scudetto.

In times of difficulty, Vincenzo was always there. Like in 1976 when after Giorgio Chinaglia's departure for New York Cosmos he took the team by the hand and led them to a massive victory against Milan which meant that only a point was then needed at Como to avoid relegation. Or in 1980 when, after the arrests of Bruno Giordano, Wilson, Lionello Manfredonia and Massimo Cacciatori, he led a team of youngsters to safety, even though Lazio were then punished with relegation anyway. Again in 1982, this time fighting to avoid Serie C and 2-0 down after just 15 minutes, he scored a hat-trick against Varese allowing Lazio to avoid serious trouble.
In total D'Amico played 338 games for Lazio, ninth in appearances for the club, and scored 51 goals. He died in Rome on July 1, 2023 – he had been fighting against cancer for the previous couple of years.
D'Amico is a Lazio legend. Loved by the fans, his attachment to Lazio in times of trouble was always commendable and he will never be forgotten.

West Ham fan survey results: 89% feel despondent for 2025-26 season
A new season is a time for optimism and excitement over potential new additions, but West Ham United supporters have been less inclined to indulge in those feelings given an uneasy summer. Mohammed Kudus could leave, with club-to-club talks with rivals Tottenham Hotspur continuing after West Ham rejected a £50million ($68m) bid. Uncertainty surrounds Lucas Paqueta's future as he awaits a verdict into the Football Association's investigation into his alleged betting breaches. And no new players have arrived at the London Stadium, with the club needing to sell before they can buy. Advertisement A squad overhaul is required following the departures of Lukasz Fabianski, Aaron Cresswell, Vladimir Coufal, Kurt Zouma and Danny Ings. Michail Antonio's contract expired on June 30, although his departure has not formally been announced. With 12 days to go until West Ham play their first pre-season friendly of the summer against Grasshopper Club Zurich, we asked our West Ham subscribers to rate their optimism for the 2025-26 season, their satisfaction with the ownership and head coach Graham Potter, and what positions they think need to be targeted in the transfer market. Here are the results. Discontent among West Ham fans over the club's owners' handling of issues is nothing new. In March 2020, hundreds of supporters walked from the Victoria Tavern pub, a three-minute walk from Plaistow station, to the London Stadium to protest against majority shareholder David Sullivan, vice-chairman Karren Brady and the late David Gold. The matchday experience at the London Stadium remains an issue, frustration lingers over the move from Upton Park in 2016, last summer saw an increase in ticket prices and withdrawal of concession season tickets in large sections of the ground, which led to West Ham and Liverpool fans uniting in solidarity. The majority of the supporters that answered our survey (59.5 per cent) are very dissatisfied with West Ham's owners, while 31 per cent are dissatisfied. Only 8.4 per cent answered that they were satisfied. It has been an unsettling 12 months after Julen Lopetegui departed as the shortest-lived managerial appointment in the club's 130-year history, sacked after just 22 games, and Tim Steidten's exit as technical director. It is no surprise fan frustration is bubbling over. Potter is not known for being an attack-minded manager, so it is not surprising that 55.9 per cent of the fans that answered are dissatisfied with the style of play. The club were porous before Potter's appointment in January, but as he reverted to a defensive formation West Ham's attacking impetus suffered. Potter intends to find the right balance next season, so it is noticeable 33.1 per cent are satisfied but 10 per cent of fans surveyed remain very dissatisfied. Potter oversaw 18 Premier League games, winning five, drawing five and losing eight. The nadir was Brighton & Hove Albion's inspired 3-2 comeback victory at the Amex Stadium in April, which culminated in Potter almost losing his cool. 'I'm not a robot; I'm a human being as well,' he said. 'I give everything to what I'm doing. Of course I'm going to be upset and frustrated. I have to come here and speak calmly to you guys (reporters in post-match press conferences) but that's not how I'm feeling inside. If you want me to swear, I can swear.' It is unclear yet if Potter will stick with a wing-back system or revert to a 3-4-3 or 4-2-3-1 shape next season. Pre-season games against Grasshopper, Manchester United, Everton, Bournemouth and Lille will provide clues about how the head coach intends on playing. Given the make-up of West Ham's squad, 46.3 per cent of respondents believe signing a striker is of huge importance, while 45.3 per cent disagree and believe signing central midfielders is the highest priority. Niclas Fullkrug is the only recognised senior striker after the expiry of Antonio's contract. Advertisement Midfield was once a strong area of the squad, with Declan Rice the mainstay of the team, plus his solid partnership with Tomas Soucek, but since the former's £105m departure to Arsenal in July 2023, West Ham's engine room midfield is slow, struggles to dictate games and lacks a goalscoring presence, barring Soucek, who still polarises opinion. A number of additions are needed to improve squad depth across the board. West Ham need a goalkeeper to provide competition to Alphonse Areola and Wes Foderingham, a left-back, with Emerson Palmieri not favoured by Potter, a central midfielder, with Soucek, James Ward-Prowse, Edson Alvarez and Guido Rodriguez Potter's recognised options. Andy Irving featured sporadically last season and is expected to leave, while it is yet to be determined if youngsters George Earthy and Freddie Potts will feature in the head coach's plans. West Ham have not finished 16th since the 2019-20 season under David Moyes. The last time they finished lower (20th) was in 2010-11, when they were relegated to the Championship. Of the fans surveyed, 46 per cent believe the club will finish 15th to 17th, while 34.4 per cent predict a final league position between ninth to 14th. On top of that, 18.1 per cent believe West Ham will suffer relegation. This all serves to highlight that many have little confidence in the squad. Potter faces a battle to restore optimism among the fanbase. Before the 1-1 home draw with Southampton in April, the head coach tried to offer encouragement and he discussed his long-term plans. 'Every squad and every Premier League team is the same: they have to adjust their team and adjust the squad for different reasons,' said Potter. 'But clearly, where we are now, we don't want to be. 'We need to improve. It's a simple thing. But at the same time, we have to make the right decisions around aligning all the resources that we have and then work together to produce a team that people can recognise and are proud of.' The club have secured a top-10 finish in three of the last five campaigns. Last season's 14th-placed finish under Potter equalled their lowest finish in that spell (they also finished 14th in 2022-23). An overwhelming 70.4 per cent of the fans surveyed would consider ninth to 14th to be an acceptable minimum finish in 2025-26. Only 23.1 per cent disagreed and favoured a fifth-to-eighth-placed finish, while 6.1 per cent voted for 15th to 17th. Just 0.3 per cent or respondents were more audacious in deeming a top four finish as an acceptable minimum. Optimism is clearly at a low ebb ahead of the new campaign and a sizeable 50 per cent of respondents are not hopeful at all ahead of the new season, while 38.9 per cent are not very hopeful. Barring potential additions, the club will hope to avoid a repeat of their slow start in 2024-25. West Ham won only five points from a possible 18 in their first six Premier League fixtures. This season, their opening six league games are against Sunderland, Chelsea, Nottingham Forest, Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace and Everton. Given the nature of their underwhelming displays towards the latter stages of the season, more laborious performances will only add to the dejection.

As soon as he was introduced as general manager of the Oklahoma Sooners, fans wondered how the balance would work between Jim Nagy and head coach Brent Venables. Advertisement While they have each made remarks about each other's role and how helpful the other has been, we've never really seen either be detailed about the balance. In a recent interview with The Triple Option podcast, Nagy slightly peeled back the curtain on what he is doing to help Venables and his staff. "I'm here, more than anything, to help the coaching staff and help build this roster, and streamline the process. Everyone says, 'They're trying to go to an NFL model.' And yes, my background is in the NFL. I've never worked in college football before, but I think there's some process things that we've brought to Oklahoma that I think are going to help the evaluation process and certainly the valuation process. We've never had to really value players. It's going to be a really fun collaboration. It already has been over the last three months, just getting in the building with the coaches. Certainly been energizing for me. I've been out of a football building for the last seven years, running the Reese's Senior Bowl. So just getting around coaches and players again has been awesome. We're trying to make their jobs easier in places. These college coaches got a lot on their plates… It is going to be a true split structure between Coach Venables and myself. I didn't want to come in here and just blow this thing up, watching tape and maybe not agree with where they were at with some of their assessments on players. We haven't done that.' While this isn't a full job description of what exactly Nagy is doing, there are a few important things that I took notice of. I think having that front office in place to help the staff balance and manage things will take a significant load off of this coaching staff. Behind the scenes of last year's disaster season, the staff had to placate players and focus on roster retention for weeks, time that took away from developing, coaching, and building game plans. Advertisement Obviously, every staff has to do that, but the front office taking over that responsibility (for the most part) frees up the coaches to actually coach moving forward. That last paragraph also stands out. Nagy says he "didn't come in here to blow this thing up", which speaks to the point about aiming for true synergy between him and Venables' staff. With Nagy's NFL background and Venables and co's coaching ability, this could be a massive success for the Oklahoma Sooners if this works out in the long term. It's a unique strategy and therefore risky, but the upside is tremendous. 2025 NFC West RB duo rankings
It is the time of the offseason, as we have done for years here on Cards Wire, where we go through each position and rank players and position groups in the NFC West. We continue by looking at the top running back duos for the Arizona Cardinals, Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks. Not much has changed since last season. The only difference from the start of last season is that the 49ers now have Isaac Guerendo as the primary backup running back instead of Elijah Mitchell or Jordan Mason. Advertisement NFL RB duo rankings: NFC West 1. 49ers: Christian McCaffrey, Isaac Guerendo Based on our starting running back and backup running back rankings, this makes sense. McCaffrey is the top starting back in the division, assuming he has recovered fully from last season's injuries. Guerendo is the top backup, too. With the top starter and top backup, combined with probably the best running scheme in the league, this makes sense. 2. Cardinals: James Conner, Trey Benson Conner was third in the starting RB rankings we did behind the Rams' Kyren Williams, but it wasn't by much. He is been a more dynamic and efficient runner than Williams but not as productive. Benson is No. 3 in backups but has starter potential and his production late in the season gives the Cardinals a pairing very similar to the Niners. Advertisement 3. Seahawks: Kenneth Walker III, Zach Charbonnet Walker was the lowest-ranked starter but Charbonnet was No. 2 as a backup. Both are productive in the run game and passing game. 4. Rams: Kyren Williams, Blake Corum Williams had nearly 1,300 yards and rushed for 14 scores but Corum had the lowest rushing production and per-carry average of all the backups.
