‘Over one lakh duplicate voters': Rahul Gandhi alleges ‘vote chori' in Lok Sabha polls, claims EC colluding with BJP

Indian Express3 days ago
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, in a press conference, alleged that their were multiple cases of 'vote chori' in the Lok Sabha elections, claiming that the Election Commission of India and BJP are colluding to 'steal' elections, citing the example of Maharashtra.
Addressing a press conference at Indira Bhawan in Delhi, Rahul Gandhi said that the Maharashtra election results confirmed the party's suspicion that assembly election was 'stolen' from them. 'Not giving machine readable voter list convinced us that EC colluded with BJP to 'steal' elections in Maharashtra,' he said.
While speaking about the Mahadevapura assembly seat in Karnataka, the Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition alleged that out of the 6.5 lakh total votes in the constituency, there was 'vote chori' of over 1 lakh votes.
'Congress research found over one lakh duplicate voters, invalid addresses, bulk voters in Mahadevapura constituency in Karnataka,' he said.
During his presser, Gandhi said that the crime of 'election fraud' is being committed against Constitution, claiming that it is being propagated at huge scale across country.
Asserting that the fraud likely swayed the Lok Sabha election results, the LoP said, 'PM Modi only needed to 'steal' 25 seats to stay in power in 2024; BJP won 25 seats with margin less than 33,000 votes in the general elections.'

What is the operational length of metro rail networks in Uttar Pradesh?

Metro Rail Network: India ranks third globally in operational metro rail network length and is on track to become the second largest Metro network in the world. The operational metro network has soared from 248 km across 5 cities (in 2014) to 1,013 km across 23 cities by May 2025, adding 763 km in just 11 years. The annual metro budget for the financial year 2025-26 is Rs 34,807 crore. During the ongoing Monsoon session of Parliament, Lok Sabha MP Dimple Yadav asked Minister of State (MoS) for Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) Tokhan Sahu about the current operational length of metro networks in Uttar Pradesh and their average daily ridership, city-wise. She also sought details on the progress and expected completion timelines for ongoing projects such as Lucknow Metro Phase-2, Kanpur Metro corridors, and Agra Metro Phase-2, along with details of any cost overruns or delays. Responding to this on August 7 in Lok Sabha, the minister said that the total operational length of metro rail network in Uttar Pradesh is 147.446 km. He also added that the ministry has received proposal for Lucknow metro Phase-1B from Charbagh to Vasantkunj of 11.165 route km at a cost of Rs 5,801.05 crore with projected completion period of 5 years from date of sanction. 'The Kanpur Metro Rail Project of 32.38 route km at a cost Rs.11,076.48 crore and Agra Metro Rail Project of 29.4 route km at a cost of Rs.8,379.62 crore have already been sanctioned. UP Metro Rail Corporation Limited (UPMRCL), which is implementing agency for metro projects in Lucknow, Kanpur and Agra has informed that there is no cost overrun in these projects,' the minister stated. Messi Kerala visit row escalates as govt, Argentine FA trade blame; Opposition alleges waste of Rs 130 crore

KOCHI: The Messi-in-Kerala dream has spiralled into a full-blown slugfest, with the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and the state government trading blame over the collapse of the plan. On Saturday, reports claimed AFA official Leandro Peterson had accused the Kerala government of breaching the contract, a charge dismissed by Sports Minister V Abdurahiman as 'baseless', insisting that if the team skipped the October visit, it would be the AFA in breach. The fresh twist has emboldened the Opposition Congress to go on the offensive, demanding that the government explain how a high-profile project, for which sponsors say they paid Rs 130 crore and the state spent lakhs on foreign trips, has spiralled into confusion, contract disputes and allegations of public money being wasted. Abdurahiman had dampened football lovers' hopes earlier this week, saying the visit by the Argentina team was 'unlikely' to happen as planned. As per some media reports, Leandro denied his side had breached the contract by postponing the tour to next year and instead pinned the blame on the Kerala government, though without detailing the alleged violations. The minister dismissed the reports and reiterated that Kerala was not interested in hosting the team next year. Govt should come clean, says Cong 'If Argentina fail to visit Kerala in October, we will see it as a breach of contract and a case of cheating. We are actively trying to bring the team here as per the contract. When a country signs the contract and accepts the money in this, what else do we have to say,' he told reporters in Malappuram.

Be ye never so high, law is above you

A mechanical engineer by qualification, the 34-year-old grandson of former prime minister HD Deve Gowda and a former MP, Prajwal Revanna is now a convicted rapist and lodged in Bengaluru Central Prison as prisoner number 15528. On August 2, the MLA/MP court in Bengaluru sentenced Prajwal to life imprisonment and fined Rs 11 lakh for raping a 47-year-old domestic worker in Mysuru and recording the assault. Of the four rape and sexual abuse cases against him, this was the first case (rape) that led to trial and conviction. The fine will be paid as compensation to the survivor – a daily wage worker, who had the spine of steel and had withstood shame, agony, social ostracisation and fear of the backlash from the political elite. Pronouncing the maximum sentence of life imprisonment following his conviction in rape, Sessions Judge Santosh Gajanana Bhat, in his 466-page judgement, held that as an MP, Prajwal wielded his political and social dominance to violate a woman employed in his household, coercing her into silence through fear, shame, and manipulation. 'What are the safeguards against an arbitrary exercise of power?' The question posed in the judgement echoed through generational trauma of sexual exploitation of disempowered women by the rich and entitled. 'What would be the just compensation that can be awarded is a question that requires to be determined;' the tone of the verdict is as poignant as it is pertinent. Prajwal, a member of the 17th Lok Sabha from Hassan constituency – the heartland of Janata Dal (Secular) of his grandfather's making – was once the third youngest MP. He hails from the affluent, being the grandson of Deve Gowda – the Mannina Maga (son of the soil) – son of former Karnataka minister, HD Revanna and nephew of Union minister and former Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy. A graduate from Bangalore Institute of Technology, Prajwal discontinued his MTech course in Australia to help his grandfather with the 2014 Lok Sabha election from the JD(S) home turf – Hassan. The latter won the election.
