Qatar's Ibrahim Al Hassan selected by AFC among Favourite Future Stars of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers
The AFC published a report on its official website on Tuesday, giving fans the opportunity to vote for the future star among the young players who participated with their national teams in the third round of the World Cup qualifiers. The report highlighted the remarkable performance of Qatar team player Ibrahim Al Hassan, who scored his first international goal with the national team against the UAE in the first round of the third round of the qualifiers, in addition to his contribution to the victory over Kyrgyzstan when he came on as a substitute and scored a goal in the third round.
The 19-year-old Al Hassan will compete with a number of players who have promising futures with their national teams, including Saudi Arabia's Musab Al Juwayr (22 years old), Abdukodir Khusanov (21 years old), who became the first player from Uzbekistan to play professionally in the English Premier League with Manchester City, Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki (22 years old), Indonesian center-back Justin Hubner (21 years old), and other players who caught the eye during their participation with their national teams in the final stage of World Cup qualifiers.
Team Qatar has qualified for the fourth round of the World Cup qualifiers, after finishing fourth in Group A of the third round of the qualifiers.
The fourth stage will feature six teams that finished third and fourth in the third round of the Asian qualifiers, including Qatar, Iraq, Oman, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
The AFC previously selected Qatar and Saudi Arabia to host the fourth-round matches, which will be held from Oct. 8-14, 2025. The draw will take place on July 17, with the six teams divided into two groups of three, each competing in a pool format. The top team in each group will qualify directly for the 2026 World Cup.

DPA Berlin Germany and the international sport community have reacted shocked to the news on Wednesday that Olympic biathlon champion Laura Dahlmeier has died in a mountaineering accident in Pakistan. Dahlmeier's management and local authorities in Pakistan said on Wednesday that the 31-year-old died after being caught in rockfall on Monday while climbing the 6,069 metres Laila Peak in the Karakoram range. Her body is yet to be recovered due to adverse conditions. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said on Instagram he had hoped that Dahlmeier could be found alive and rescued. 'Laura Dahlmeier was an ambassador for our country in the world, a role model for peaceful, cheerful and fair coexistence across borders. That's how I will remember her, that's how many people in our country will remember her,' Steinmeier said. Dahlmeier won two Olympic golds, seven world titles and the overall World Cup in a glittering biathlon career she ended at age 25 in 2019. She was also German Sportswoman of the Year in 2017 and a biathlon TV pundit after her active career. Dahlmeier was a state-certified mountain and ski guide, and an active member of Germany's mountain rescue organization. She was considered an experienced and risk-aware mountaineer. International Olympic Committee president Kirsty Coventry said on platform X that Dahlmeier 'lost her life in her beloved mountains. 'The news about the passing of two-time Olympic biathlon champion Laura Dahlmeier in a terrible mountaineering accident is deeply shocking for all of us in the Olympic Movement. 'Laura made history at the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics as the first female biathlete to win sprint and pursuit gold at the same Games edition. She will be remembered forever. Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this very difficult time,' Coventry said. The German Ski Federation DSV said on their website: 'We were shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the tragic mountain accident in Pakistan in which our Olympic champion and long-time national team athlete Laura Dahlmeier died at the age of just 31. 'Our thoughts are with her family, her friends, her companions - and with everyone who was touched by Laura's extraordinary personality and sporting greatness.' The DSV named Dahlmeier 'one of Germany's must successful winter sport athletes' and 'a true role model. 'In Laura, the German Ski Federation has not only lost an outstanding athlete, but also a very special person. Her legacy will reach far beyond sport. We will honour her memory,' the DSV said. The International Biathlon Union (IBU) said on their website: 'Laura was one of the greatest athletes to grace biathlon and her loss is felt deeply by everyone in biathlon, the wider German sport family and beyond.

Qatar's national basketball team gains valuable experience at International Friendly Tournament

Japan started strongly, securing the first quarter 29-19. Qatar responded in the second quarter, matching Japan's intensity with a 24-24 tie. Ter Stegen to remain Germany's number one, says Nagelsmann
dpa Leipzig Marc-Andre ter Stegen will remain German national team first choice goalkeeper heading towards next year's World Cup, as long as he becomes starting club keeper again after a return from back surgery, coach Julian Nagelsmann has said. 'In the end he is our number one if he is healthy and number one in the club,' Nagelsmann said on Wednesday at an international coaches congress. Nagelsmann also announced that captain Joshua Kimmich would return into midfield, where he also plays at Bayern Munich, after previously being used as a right back in the national team. 'As it stands now he will return to the number six because he simply is among the two three players who will always play there at his club,' Nagelsmann said. Ter Stegen was named first choice by Nagelsmann after Manuel Neuer's international retirement last year. Nagelsmann said that 'as it stands now' there are no plans to ask Neuer to return, after ter Stegen underwent back surgery this week and is expected to be sidelined for three months. In addition, he has been relegated to third choice at his club Barcelona, with newly signed Joan Garcia and veteran Wojciech Szcz?sny ahead of him. Spanish champions Barca reportedly want to sell ter Stegen, but a summer transfer could be difficult, given the operation. Nagelsmann said he was in 'a super exchange' with ter Stegen and expects him to become fully fit again and the number one. But he added that there are 'many good ideas, many good solutions if it is not the case.' Nagelsmann did not go into details but Oliver Baumann and Alexander Nübel deputised between the Germany posts when ter Stegen was sidelined with a severe knee injury for many months last season. He doesn't mind this tweaked game plan because 'in our big years we also didn't have 10 skilful players on the pitch.'
