Opportunity knocks – women's boxing can take centre stage

BBC News08-03-2025

The iconic Royal Albert Hall has hosted pugilism for over a century, welcomed key political figures and showcased musical superstars. On Friday evening, a women's bout headlined the regal venue for the first time. About 4,000 fans witnessed Lauren Price dominate trailblazer Natasha Jonas in the main event of an all-female card.In the chief support, Caroline Dubois outpointed Bo Mi Re Shin in an entertaining battle. The self-assured world champion has the potential to make waves – in the ring and commercially - for years to come.Karen Artingsall became British champion by beating Raven Chapman in a featherweight contest that shows a gradual deepening of the depth of women's boxing, which has historically been lacking. On the surface, the event - a day before International Women's Day - was a success and provides a launchpad for women's boxing in Britain to progress. But we have been here before.Former world champion Hannah Rankin feels women's boxing failed to capitalise on the momentum created by Savannah Marshall v Claressa Shields in October 2022, when an all-women card packed out the O2 Arena."There was a real opportunity there but when big-time boxing moved to Saudi Arabia, it slowed down the progression and whole trajectory of women's boxing," she says.Saudi Arabia continues to host high-profile men's bouts as women's boxing has generally been overlooked. The trilogy between Irishwoman Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano in New York, which will broadcast on Netflix in June, will help grow the sport globally, but what can be done to make the female sphere take centre stage in the United Kingdom?
I'm not a fan of all-female cards - Rankin
Pioneer of women's boxing Jane Couch, TV presenter Stacey Dooley and several female athletes packed out the majestic Kensington venue. The Shields-Marshall card, albeit nearly two-and-a-half years ago, reportedly reached a pick audience of one million viewers."This might be controversial, but I'm just not a fan [of all-female cards] and I never have been," Scotland's Rankin says. She feels mixed-gender cards rather than segregating the two codes will attract more interest."I think if promoters are smart, they will start pushing women from where they're from," Rankin says.Price has competed in Wales just once in nine pro bouts while London's highly talented IBF super-bantamweight champion Ellie Scotney's past two bouts have taken place on undercards in Manchester and Nottingham."Can Ellie be given an opportunity to sell out a smaller venue in London?" adds Rankin."If women aren't getting the opportunities in Saudi, then let us be the champions at home and bring the crowds at home to watch."They might say they're not big ticket sellers but how do you become a big ticket seller if people from your area can't come and see you?"
Onus on fighters to self-promote better
Shields – the self-proclaimed 'Greatest Woman of All Time' - played up to the American villain role against Marshall in a fight which stemmed from an amateur rivalry. There was no such animosity between Jonas and Price in a relatively subdued fight week. "Boxing is 50% talent and 50% entertainment," Rankin says."Female fighters have to take some ownership and start promoting themselves."Go work in your community, be active on social media, speak up in press conferences – however you want to sell yourself."Londoner Dubois is one of a few female fighters beginning to showcase the art of self-promotion, though."How audacious that she thinks she can beat me?", Dubois said at Wednesday's news conference, despite South Korean Shin saying nothing to prompt such an impassioned response.Dubois is a "breath of fresh air", according to Rankin, and the 25-year-old appears to understand the importance of putting on a show - even if it might be to her detriment. In the final round against Shin, Dubois took unnecessary risks and heavy hits in a bid to entertain her home crowd.
British title fights, three-minute rounds & UFC's White
British title fights are a mainstay in the men's code, producing countless classics including Anthony Joshua's showdown with Dillian Whyte in 2015.But they were only introduced in women's boxing in 2023, when Price beat Kirstie Bavington to become the inaugural champion."The British title can create more domestic dust-ups before we get onto the world level," Rankin says."For men, it's revered in every gym. Every guy would talk about winning the British title and it just isolated us a little bit."The conversation on whether female's should adopt three-minute rounds like their male counterparts is one which splits opinion. But while those format changes may come with time, the future of women's boxing rests on the ever-evolving boxing landscape.UFC president Dana White has teamed up with Saudi organisers to create a new boxing league, which Rankin hopes can benefit female boxing. There is clearly work to be done, yet it simply cannot be ignored that women's boxing was banned until 1998 in the United Kingdom and 2001 in Ireland. And it has been less than a decade since Taylor's pro debut took it into the mainstream. To be where we are today – an all-female card at a venue steeped in boxing history with thousands in attendance – is cause for celebration.

Taylor Knibb insists 'I'm not the one to beat' as PTO resumes

Defending champion Taylor Knibb insists she is not the one to beat ahead of the T100 Triathlon World Tour's latest stop in Vancouver. Knibb romped to the world title last year but was beaten for the first time under the T100 in San Francisco a fortnight ago when she finished second behind Julie Derron. But the American was keen to highlight the strength in depth of the women's field, and shrugged off the notion that she had a target on her back on Canada's west coast. 'Defending would imply you have something to lose, so reframing that is more appropriate in that there is a world title on the line and I would like to do everything I can to get another world title,' she said. 'No one has earned it yet and it is all for the taking. 'There are a lot of really strong women in the field and if there is anyone who thinks I am the only person to beat, I have a list that is very extensive. 'There are a lot of women who are incredibly strong and incredibly talented. There are a lot of threats.' Knibb won all of her T100 races last season, picking up victories in San Francisco, Ibiza and Las Vegas before sealing the world title with a dominant display in Dubai last November. The 27-year-old was unable to repeat the feat in San Fransico two weeks ago, but the American was positive about her season opener having missed the first leg in Singapore. 'It was a great first race of the season and I am excited to keep on improving from there,' she said. 'I have a lot of work to do. You can't do it all in two weeks, you have to recover for the next race but I am excited for the season ahead.' Knibb will race in Vancouver for the first time in her career, as the T100 Triathlon World Tour makes its maiden stop in Canada. Having raced all around the globe, including at two Olympic Games, Knibb is embracing a new environment and a new course to get her teeth into. 'It's really fun to get to go to a place I've never been to before that is really quite gorgeous,' she added. 'In this sport, there are races that are held in the same place for numerous years and that's fantastic but after the 15th time of visiting a city, it is fun to go somewhere else. 'It looks like a fantastic course. I tried the bike course yesterday. The swim for the women is apparently going to be a really long run in, so we'll see how that plays out. 'It seems like a fantastic venue and the T100 has once again delivered a fantastic race course.' Watch the world's top 20 female and top 20 male triathletes race live in the Vancouver T100 on Saturday 14 June. The broadcast starts at 0915 local time, 1715 in the UK, with the men's race starting at 0930 and then the women at 1200. You can tune in live for free globally on PTO+ or watch on partners channels such as TNT Sports in the UK, Max or Discovery+ in Europe, or beIN in North America. For more details visit

Rangers preparing £6m transfer bid for striker who could join Dor Turgeman in new-look £10m attack

Russell Martin is targeting the Croatian striker, who hit 13 goals for Belgian side Westerlo last season. Sign up for the Rangers newsletter Sign up And they could use the sale of Cyriel Dessers to help fund the move. Reports claim the Nigerian hitman has agreed a £30,000-a-week deal with AEK Athens. The Greek giants held initial discussions with the Ibrox side earlier this week and they now believe they finally have their man. Dessers joined Gers in a £3m move from Cremonese two years ago. And despite netting 51 goals in 109 games he remains a divisive figure among the Gers support. AEK are willing to offer him a fresh start in the Greek capital, with Dessers sold on the move. Rangers' new American owners are set to demand £5m for his services, with AEK willing to spend big to land their man. A fee has yet to be agreed. Robin Propper is another player edging ever closer to an Ibrox exit. It's understood a verbal deal with FC Twente is in place that would see the Dutch defender return home after a single season in Glasgow. Rangers fans react to news Russell Martin is their new manager Twente are prepared to pay £1m for their former skipper, who will hold talks with new Gers gaffer Martin to determine his future. It's expected Propper will be given the green light to head back to Holland. US owner Andrew Cavenagh and his San Francisco 49ers backers have vowed to inject £20m of additional funds into the Ibrox coffers. Last week, CEO Patrick Stewart vowed a 'decent amount' would be ring fenced for recruitment. Leicester City defender Conor Coady remains a target as Martin bids to bolster Gers' backline. And the Ibrox side remain very much in the hunt for £4m-rated Israeli striker Dor Turgeman. Talks with Maccabi Tel Aviv are ongoing as Gers seek to pair him with Frigan next season. Reports in Croatia claim the Light Blues are leading the race for the 22-year-old striker, with HSV and Hull City also showing an interest. Brawl breaks out on stage before George Kambosos vs Richardson Hitchins over $50,000 fight bet

GEORGE KAMBOSOS and Richardson Hitchins almost sparked a mass brawl on stage after clashing over a $50,000 fight bet. Kambosos returns to New York - where he stunned Teofimo Lopez to win the lightweight titles in 2021 - to challenge for Hitchins's 140lb IBF belt. 4 Richardson Hitchins challenged George Kambosos to a $50,000 bet Credit: Geoffrey Knott 4 It sparked a brawl on stage Credit: Geoffrey Knott 4 Hitchins trainer Lenny Wilson grabbed a chair Credit: Geoffrey Knott And the American champion brought $50,000 (£42,500) cash on stage with him at their press conference to challenge Kambosos to a wager. He said: 'As far as George Kambosos, a lot of people want to say that - you know when they fight me a lot of guys game plan to go forward, hit him in the shoulder, break him down. "That's every guy's f**cking game plan. I think that George Kambosos is at this level because obviously he's got boxing skills. That's what f***ed Teofimo up. "Teofimo came at him as if he was just a regular guy and you know he ran into his face. I know for sure I'm confident in myself, I've been saying it since the face off. "I want to bet 50,000. His dad said he got the bet, so hold up, he said bring the money. The money's here, hold up." After Hitchins produced the cash - Kambosos alleged it was "fake" money causing the two camps to clash on stage. And Kambosos' dad and trainer Jim is said to have attacked Hitchins' trainer Lenny Wilson in defence as security were forced to intervene. CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS Kambosos, 31, has only lost to Devin Haney and Vasiliy Lomachenko and stepped up to super-lightweight to beat Jake Wyllie in March. Unbeaten Hitchins, 27, meanwhile won the title against Liam Paro in December to spoil an all-Aussie title bout against Kambosos. Kambosos, the challenger again, said: 'As you know, I love that underdog role, but there are no maybes, I'm doing this. There's no fake stuff. "I'm going to this home in a familiar place where I'm 2-0 already. This is the trifecta. Like Lenny said, the talk is finished and we don't need to sit and talk. "I'm coming here as the underdog and I'm coming here to win this fight. You have seen it before and I'm here to win this fight; whatever it takes there is no plan B. 'He's the one who is making statements and saying he's going to knock me out. "We have our plans and have worked extremely hard in training camp and who knows maybe I will learn from him and run the whole fight. "You know I can box and fight and dictate the fight to do whatever it takes. I can get knocked down and get back up again to win a championship fight. "I've seen it all at the highest level and have been at the pinnacle and he isn't. When you fight the best and beat the best and lose to the best you're still here. "This warrior is still here back at his favourite home grounds to do the trifecta in a Matchroom show and I never lost in America or a Matchroom show.'
