VCK's Thol Thirumavalavan defends ‘Brahmin' remark, EPS chastises MGR bashers
Thirumavalavan, while addressing a memorial function for former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi in Chennai on Thursday, had said 'there is popular opinion that MGR's entry had brought 'benefit' to certain political forces by sowing anti-Karunanidhi sentiment, enabling the infiltration of Brahminism into the Dravidian movement, and paving the way for a Brahmin woman to lead a Dravidian party'. He had also said national parties were not able to grow in the state amidst the fight between these parties.
After his speech stoked controversy, Thirumavalavan told reporters at Tiruchy airport on Saturday that he had no intention of insulting MGR or J Jayalalithaa and that his remarks in Chennai were aimed at explaining how Tamil Nadu politics had revolved around Karunanidhi over the past 60 years. 'In my speech, I said that politics was centred on opposing Karunanidhi. I also said that AIADMK, under MGR and Jayalalithaa had functioned largely as a 'Karunanidhi-opposition',' he said.

Union minister Sukanta Majumdar on Sunday claimed that the Railways are unable to complete and commission more than 69 projects in West Bengal due to land availability issues. 'There is no dearth of funds, but the Railways are unable to complete and commission more than 69 projects in West Bengal owing to land availability issues,' he told reporters after inaugurating an AC EMU service at Sealdah railway station here. Asserting that the Railways will provide the requisite funds for completion of the projects, Majumdar said, 'We want the West Bengal government to rise above politics to provide land for these, as it concerns the interest of 10 crore people of the state. It is about the development of the state,' he said. Majumdar also urged the West Bengal government to send a proposal for renaming the Sealdah railway station after Sangh ideologue Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee. 'We will certainly get the proposal sanctioned from the central government to change the station's name to Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Sealdah Terminus,' he said. Hitting out at Majumdar's proposal of renaming Sealdah station, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said: 'If Sealdah station is to be renamed, let it be renamed commemorating Swami Vivekananda. After his famous speech in Chicago, when Swami Vivekananda came back, he reached Sealdah station first.' At Dumdum station, where Mazumdar got off the train, TMC and BJP workers engaged in a heated war of words and sloganeering. While TMC workers raised 'Joy Bangla' slogans, BJP supporters chanted Jai Shri Ram and Jai Bharat. A TMC protester said, 'We don't want any central minister here. They are anti-Bangla and Bengalis. We Bengalis are being assaulted in other states. They call us foreigners and tell us to go back to Bangladesh. So, wherever we see them, I will say 'Joy Bangla'.'

CM Stalin to visit UK, Germany to attract foreign investment in Tamil Nadu
CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin is expected to travel to the United Kingdom and Germany by the end of this month or the first week of September, during which meetings related to attracting more investments to the state are planned, in addition to meetings with the diaspora and other commitments, highly placed sources said. During the trip, the chief minister is also expected to deliver a lecture at the King's College London (KCL), sources said, adding that the details are yet to be finalised. It is to be noted that renowned academic Christophe Jaffrelot, who is the Avantha Chair and Professor of Indian Politics and Sociology at the King's India Institute in KCL, has written extensively on Indian politics, including the Dravidian parties, besides guiding research scholars in these areas of study. When contacted by TNIE, officials said the engagements of the CM during the trip cannot be confirmed at the moment since the programmes are still being finalised. They said that the trip is likely to last for a week or 10 days. This would be the fifth foreign visit of CM Stalin. With the elections just eight months away, this is likely to be his last foreign visit in the present government.
